Thank you John Harrison for what could be considered a how-to guide on dealing with dementia as a caregiver.
My siblings and I were fortunate enough to be able to care for our mother in her home while she battled Alzheimer’s. She lost that battle in 2019 but we learned some things along the way through experience. Much of what Mr. Harrison covers in Unraveling Dementia. While there is such a broad spectrum and different diseases under dementia, there is no one size fits all way to care for the patients. Mr. Harrison explains the need to communicate, listen, and change your way of thinking.
I learned about the different types of dementia. It did leave me wondering if my mother was misdiagnosed with Alzheimer’s instead of LBD. As her symptoms were more like LBD. She was seen by a neurologist who did verbal testing but never underwent anything further. She was, shortly after, referred to hospice care and then it was just basic comfort care. More testing needs to be done if there is ever to be a chance of fighting this awful disease. You don’t treat all cancers the same way, you shouldn’t be told to treat all dementia the same way.
I would recommend for all family members and caregivers to read Unraveling Dementia. It would be amazing if Neurologists were to supply each patient with a copy for all of their loved ones to read.
A nonfiction book, Unravelling Dementia: A Comprehensive Guide for Families (2024) by John Harrison is a helpful guide for those seeking information on understanding the disease and how best to manage it. Using simple language to explain the cognitive changes in the brain and their impact on a person’s behaviour, daily functioning and cognitive deterioration, it provides practical advice on managing and supporting sufferers, and those who are grieving, useful legal and end-life advice. The author does not provide any professional or personal details, nor includes any referencing or research basis for his work. Given this omission, a cautionary warning that the information is general in detail and to seek professional advice for your circumstances. A handy easy to read and generally applicable guide that makes for a three stars read rating. With thanks to Independently Published Books and the author, for an uncorrected advanced review copy for review purposes. As always, the opinions herein are totally my own, freely given and without inducement.
