Fantastic, absolutely packed with racial tension which is uneasy and terrifying in places. White cops are being killed whilst going about their daily business and the city is being thrown into panic with no real clues to go on. If the police arenβt safe, then who is. People are questioning whether it is retaliation for the number of blacks being killed by cops and feeling targeted.
The central characters are very likeable and they are police partners, ironically one black and one white which obviously feeds well into the storyline. There are a lot of loyalties strained both family and otherwise so a lot to unpack with the complexities of the relationships.
The action is fast and the build up to the deaths expertly narrated as we build up a picture of the innocent people who are dying and the normality of their relationships with loved ones which makes the impact felt hard.
I liked the red herrings and twists in the story and the expect the unexpected vibes. Definitely recommend.
Don't sleep on this book. This thriller is rife with racial tension, and suspense. It had my heart racing at points. I flew through this book.
Well done!
First, I cannot imagine being Law Enforcement in this day and age, regardless of race, gender, etc. This story was incredibly intense, highlighting racial division in the inner city of Los Angeles as well as challeges our Police face. A string of murders erupt throughout the city, targeting white officers. Tenured officer Tony Calvanese is partnered up with a highly educated older rookie, Paul Henderson, who has been a target of racial profiling in Beverly Hills - as a current LAPD officer!
There was a nice balance of humor - usually between the partners or their "smart" talk back to their commanding officer.
This is a well written crime thriller, set in LA and tackling the subject of racial tension. The two lead characters, Henderson and Calvanese are partners in LAPD. There is a lot of tension in the book and it is not an easy read but one I would highly recommend. It is a fast paced and very thought provoking read with excellent characterisation and a read which I thoroughly enjoyed. Thanks to Net Galley for my ARC.
Racial violence explodes across LA putting the entire police department on alert. after an innocent unarmed black man, a young girl. When the murder of an LAPD officer starts a string of cop killings in the city, the entire police force is now on alert. It appears that the killer is specifically targeting police officers, killing them one by one.
Officers Calvanese and Henderson are sent out to find the killer before any more lives are lost. Their efforts are hindered by political tensions within the police force. Their job is hindered by the fact that Henderson is black and Calvanese is white. Thus they are termed mismatched partners because they fail to come to some agreement on the cause of the brutality and racism that is ravaging the city. As the number of killings builds up, they are instantly put on the hot seat. They must resolve their differences before things become entirely out of control.
An edge-of-the-seat, beautifully written thriller that will keep you turning the pages until the very end.
Having not read this author before I was unsure what to expect.
This was a good solid 3 star read. A very easy read to while away a few hours on a chilly evening. Would definitely recommend to others
Thank you for the opportunity to review
Absolutely riveting. Loved the banter between Henderson & Calvanese. This has to be the best crime read of the year and would make a terrific movie or tv show. I would love to see a sequel! WTG Jeff ππ»ππ»ππ»ππ»ππ»
Wow! What a ride. I really enjoyed reading it and didnβt want to put it down. Thanks to NetGalley and the publisher for the opportunity to read this ARC!
This was a very intense story, some parts I found difficult to absorb but the story on the whole was fascinating. The main characters were great and the concluion was brilliant.
I enjoyed reading The Stolen Girls so I was really excited for this one. There were definitely points that were difficult to read due to the blatant racism in the police department and this was hard to read at points bit showed the truth in some police situations. Great read overall.
The Killing Season by Jeff Stetson was rather good. I had not read any other book by this author, so this was my first introduction to his writing. The main characters, Henderson and Calvanese, were a good pairing. Their interactions were frustrating at times, but they showed a realistic relationship.
Tensions explode across Los Angeles as violence ravages the city. An innocent unarmed Black man shot dead by the cops, a little girl caught in gang crossfire, an LAPD officer killed by predawn gunfire in the Hollywood Hills. And the first in a string of cop killings that have the force on edge.
The story starts off strong and doesn't let up until the satisfying ending. There were times the story got a bit tense to read and some of the jokes were a bit over the top, but I'm sure that is what happens with police officers.
The characters were well-developed, and the stories were realistic. The writing was good and held my interest. I would recommend this book.

Thank you to Netgalley, the publisher and author for this eARC.
The title of this book looked intriguing and from the blurb I thought it would be my kind of read. It was, and I thoroughly enjoyed The Killing Season from start to finish. Officer Tony Calvanese is paired up with newbie Paul Henderson and they investigate a number of cop killings. I think Jeff Stetson has come up with a great read here, the writing is good and the plot line is well thought out. The book tackles racism - within communities and the police force itself. At times I found this to be a hard hitting, poignant and thought provoking read which will stay with me for a while afterwards. I really liked Calvanese and Henderson who struggle working together initially and I loved the humorous moments between them. The glimpses into their home and personal lives are lovely touches that give their characters greater depth. The author really ramps up the tension in his writing and the animosity between characters felt very real. This soon became a very moreish, hard to put down read which showed all is not what it seems. Overall a very, very good, fast paced read that is certainly believeable and I'd recommend it.

Thanks to NetGalley and Storm Publishing for this Advanced Readerβs Copy of The Killing Season by Jeff Stetson due to be published May 24, 2024.
LAPD policeman Tony Calvanese is determined to find out who is killing cops in LA. His new partner, rookie Paul Henderson, is as determined as Tony β especially after he was stopped and harassed while out jogging because of his skin color before he could find his badge. Can this unlikely pair find the killers, or will it spark more tension between them before the killer is caught?
I had read The Stolen Girls, so I was thrilled to get this one. While reading this book, it brought back and saddened me how flagrant racism is still today. Between police and citizens and even between the races in the police department β it is there. I did love the sarcasm of Tony and the humorous banter between Tony and his partner, but racism was rampant, and war was declared on the LAPD.
What a fabulous book β I laughed and cried at different times. It had me hooked at the beginning and never let go. This was as good, if not better, than his last one I read. Five stars for The Killing Season!
