I have seen this series around for a while, but this was the first title that I read. I truly enjoyed it. I think it gave a great introduction to this amazing athlete, and can inspire readers to follow their own dreams. The illustrations are so sweet as well. I recommend this series for early readers that are interested in learning more about some of their favorite people!
My littles absolutely loved this! They have loved watching Simone’s performances at the Olympics and really enjoyed learning more about Simone’s life and the hard work and determination that propelled her to becoming the greatest gymnast of all time. The illustrations were absolutely stunning and my younger readers and I loved the additional biography, images, and timeline at the end of the book.
As a parent of two littles who are extremely hardworking and sometimes hard on themselves, I was so grateful the author highlighted Simone’s advocacy and prioritization of her mental health and wellbeing. This is such an important reminder for readers of all ages, but I especially love how this message will reach young readers and help them prioritize their own mental health and learn to communicate their needs from an early age.
Simone’s story is so powerful, inspiring, and hopeful, and I love that this book will encourage younger readers to never give up on their dreams, to use their voices to speak out against injustice, and to remind them of the importance of taking a step back and prioritizing their own mental health. Cannot recommend enough!
Always nice to see stories of trailblazers and role models. You'd have to have lived under a rock for the past decade to not have any idea who Biles is, but this is a great intro for young readers who are interested in gymnastics or other sports.
It's particularly interesting to me to see that the book alludes to recent scandals in the gymnastics world—in a very age-appropriate way—and also that it gives a nod to Biles taking some time off when the pressure was too much. It's easy to focus on the relatively simple things like gold medals (easy to understand!), but just as valuable, if not more, for kids to get messages about speaking up when something's not right and making sure to prioritize health. (And also nice to see the book say directly that Biles lived with her grandparents—I'm guessing that there aren't that many books where young kids who live with non-parental guardians can see their experience reflected in a neutral-positive way.)
All told, a nice addition to a child's library...especially one who tends to do cartwheels all over the furniture.
Thanks to the author and publisher for providing a review copy through NetGalley.
I am the biggest fan of Simone and followed her career since the Rio olympics, so I absolutely loved this. Fantastic art and she is such a role model!
Very cute book on Simone Biles. Portrays her as a hero, which is great for young kids to see that she is a black girl who came from nothing fancy, in fact even being adopted, and was able to become the world's best gymnast. Even covers the Olympics where she has the twisties and had to not compete.
Wonderful book and great illustrations. Would purchase for and read to any young children in need of a positive example.
I find these books both entertaining and educational for a younger audience. I like that icons are having their story told for a younger audience. It gives them not just a story, but helps with boosting confidence in their young minds. I loved watching Simone be such a great gymnast and just getting better and better. She deserves all the praise.
Amazing! Another book that shows the importance of working hard to achieve your dreams. It also shows the importance of standing up for what is right and the importance of taking care of yourself.
Iconic! Cute! Uplifting! Love this series and love Simone so much. Buying for all my nieces and nephews!
I appreciate the chance to read this book provided by NetGalley and Quarto Publishing Group - Frances Lincoln Children's Books.
The book was charming, with wonderfully detailed illustrations. Learning about Simone's dedication and resilience on her journey to becoming a world-class gymnast was truly inspiring. Despite facing challenges, she remained determined to care for herself and follow her dreams. This book would be a fantastic choice for any child.
Wow, another super cute biography! I even learned new things about Simone Biles that I didn't know before! It's such a touching and adorable read. Definitely a great choice for a bedtime story for any kiddo!
Great read about a gymnast I didn't know too much about.
Snippet sized information about her life from a young child, written in a very easy to understand way.
Touched on her troubles with mental health and that she had to step back from everything - again encouraging for children to grow up knowing that's okay
Great read
This book was so cute - I have enjoyed all of the Little People Big Dreams books I have read advances of. They are age appropriate ways to learn about about public figures. This does a good job addressing difficult topics in Simone’s life as well. Well done!
I love the Little People, Big Dreams series. As an adult I am reading about someone I know about and often learning things. As a mom, I love that it’s showing an inspiring story to my kiddos.
I found with Simone Biles it needed a bit more detail, for those who don’t already know a lot about Simone Biles. But it was still a great story regardless and great illustrations.
Thanks for the chance to read.
Pros: I adore the Little People Big Dreams series of children's books and find myself requesting each one on NetGalley because I end up learning something from them. I think it's fantastic that these books for children focus on the famous person as a child and how they came to be the person the world knows. The attention to detail in the illustrations of each book is always impressive and shows the care given to each subject. Specifically to this book about Simone Biles, I was excited to see this book added to the collection because I cannot wait to cheer for her in the Olympics this year. I think she is such an important sports figure, so her book is a fantastic gift to give to young gymnasts. I liked how the book discussed topics in a way that was appropriate for children but also did not shy away from them.
Cons: None! I can't wait to read more in this series.
Thank you to NetGalley and Quarto Publishing Group - Frances Lincoln Children's Books for the opportunity to read this book.
My daughter is a huge gymnast lover and having a person relatable to her is a huge thing. She really enjoyed learning lots of new facts and seeing how gymnasts can have such a fun time. The design of the book was very fun and colourful, definitely keeps young minds interested.
This entry in the popular series tells the story of the world renowned gymnast. Her successes in competition are certainly given attention but so are some struggles and her willingness to stand up for what is right. All of these facts of Biles make her an inspiration.
Simone Biles is a role model. Here kids will get to know more about her.
Many thanks to NetGalley and Quarto Publishing Group for this title. All opinions are my own.
As a mother of a teenager it has been a while since I have read children’s books but while flipping through the sports section of Net Galley I came across a couple of cute looking biographies from the Little People Big Dreams series.
As a gymnastics fan I decided to give this Simone Biles book a read and what a cute little book it was!!! Fantastic illustrations and I like how Simone’s story was told to include some of her more challenging life experiences in an age appropriate way.
From the adult perspective I like how there is more detailed two page biography at the back. These books would be a fantastic add to any grade school library!
Thank you Net Galley and Quarto Publishing Group – Frances Lincoln Children's Books for this gem of a book to read!
This book deserves as many stars as Simone has medals! I love the LPBD series so much, but this might be the most impactful, important, one I've read! I just watched an interview with Simone, she was talking about her mental health struggles & the abuse from Larry Nassar. This book speaks simply, but powerfully about these issues. Appropriately so for younger children. Two incredibly important topics to bring awareness to! Bravo, a beautiful book!
I loved reading this biography of Simone Biles with my little one. He is also one who has a hard time sitting still, so he loved following Simone's story. In addition to the illustrated biography geared towards the kiddos, there is additional biographical information and photographs at the end of the book.
Another adorable entry into the Little People, BIG DREAMS series! I loved the art style and Simone's story. I really appreciated that this book did touch on her struggles with mental health and the abuse from her coaches. These were short mentions, but parents should be aware their kiddos might have some questions for them after reading her story. I would still definitely recommend it though!
The only issue I had with this book, is that some of the gymnastics illustrations looked a bit awkward, and it was difficult to tell what Simone doing.
Thanks to Net Galley, Maria Isabel Sanchez Vegara, and Quarto Publishing for giving me the chance to read an advance copy and review!
