A profound novel. Set against the vivid backdrop of the 1960s, this captivating novel traces its origins back to the 1940s, during the Second World War. Agnes, who was raised in England by her grandfather after the tragic loss of her parents, stumbles upon a life-altering discovery. While visiting her ailing grandfather one weekend, she finds partially burned papers that reveal shocking truths about her origins. Before she can seek clarity, her grandfather passes away.
Through these documents, Agnes learns she was born to a mother involved in the Lebensborn program, designed to propagate Nazi ideals. Determined to uncover her true identity, Agnes embarks on a journey that leads her to astonishing revelations: she has a mother, Liv, who is still alive, a sister named Karolina, and a father who was a Nazi.
The novel intricately weaves the stories of Agnes, her sister Karolina, and their mother Liv, as Agnes ventures into East Berlin to find her sister. This is a profoundly moving tale, brimming with themes of love, heartbreak, family bonds, courage, and compassion. It’s a remarkable story. Many thanks to NetGalley and the author for the opportunity to read this remarkable novel.
