Certainly a thrill a minute with twists and turns to keep even the greediest thriller reader happy. Interesting plot and on the whole quite plausible..My only gripe being how some of the off camera” events were conveniently explained to a character so as to fill the reader in. It was just a bit clumsy but I loved the book overall.
Another great read by C.M. Ewan. This one was a real page-turner full of twists and turns. I loved it.
Thanks to Netgalley and the publishers for an ARC in exchange for my honest review
Oh my god! This book has the makings of a perfect thriller that makes you grip the popcorn bucket hard. You can literally feel the tense atmosphere out of the pages. The author does a brilliant job of creating the setting and uses it to create a sense of panic and fear.
I loved the plot and narratives. It made me continuously guess what was going on. I love how it had me on my toes and the fast paced storytelling. Has to be on my top books for the year.
Thank you Pan Macmillan and NetGalley for this e-arc in exchange of my unbiased review.
This is a really good, tense, thriller of a read. A young couple who have had a romantic weekend cut short due to a recall to work, suddenly find themselves in an impossible situation.
They are driving along a foggy road and are flagged down by another couple with a baby seat. Abi the main character senses something is wrong and oh boy, Is she right?.. what follows is an edge of the seat storyline.
I had an issue with the flow and it could be tighter in length but that’s partly due to the claustrophobic nature of the tale.
All in all a solid recommendation and a thank you to NetGalley and PanMac marketing for the opportunity to preview.
The first half of this book is very slow moving, though you do feel the tension of Ben & Abi's situation build up when they pick up a couple with a baby at the side of the road at night. The journey in the fog is drawn out and there is definately something off about the couple that they have picked up. Abi, the driver has to stop for petrol and this changes the situation for all the people in the car. After this, the pace picks up a little and then really goes with a bang once they reach their destination. The short chapters told from different points of view do make for quick reading, the last part of the book is maybe a little far-fetched but I found myself hoping that things would turn out OK.
I was considering rating this as 3 stars, not bad but not great, but will round up to 4 as the second half definately kept my interest . Thanks to Net Galley for the ARC
Some say ,"no good turn goes unpunished" & this was certainly true for Abi & Ben! Having been forced to cut short their break in Cornwall so Ben can go in to work they set off for Bristol in thick fog. Abi is far from happy. They had looked up a route that would save time but have missed the turning. When a man appears out of the fog she nearly runs him down but narrowly misses him. Ben wants to stop, she doesn't but a mile or two down the road they spot a car with the bonnet up & a woman standing with a baby car seat beside it. This time they do stop. The man from up the road catches up & explains they need to get down the road to get help. They pile into the car & the nightmare begins.
Having most of a story taking place in a car in the fog isn't what you expect to be an action packed story but this one definitely is. OK at times it does stretch believability but by that time I was so totally engaged I didn't care! I read far into the night. Thanks to Netgalley & the publisher for letting me read & review this book.
Description sounded good but I found the story to be very confusing and I couldnt get in to it. From the reviews I see that I am in the minority, but sadly this one wasnt for me
One Wrong Turn, one right page-turner.
That was one hell of a night. The night for Abi and Ben, when a foggy journey goes about as far off the path as possible, and the night I spent reading because I couldn't put it down.
Buckle up buttercup, this one's a goodie.
Claustrophobic..
One decision, numerous consequences, in this edge of seat twisting suspense. A claustrophobic thriller with a propulsive plot populated with a credible cast and a pacy narrative. Wholly tension fuelled and with an array of twists that the reader may not see coming. Tense, edgy and filled with dramatic moments.
The story kicks off with Abi and Ben, a young couple driving home through thick fog after a weekend cut short. Their decision to stop and help Samantha, Paul, and their baby stranded by the roadside sets off a chain of increasingly tense and dangerous events.
The narrative is interwoven with flashbacks, revealing the backstory of Samantha and Paul, and how they ended up in such dire straits. The story's momentum is driven by constant twists and turns, maintaining suspense throughout.
The characters are well-written and multifaceted. Abi and Ben's evolving relationship adds depth to their characters, highlighting their vulnerabilities and strengths. Samantha and Paul are equally complex, with their true intentions gradually unveiled. The characters' interactions are realistic and charged with tension, that kept me invested in their fates.
The pacing is relentless, with short, punchy chapters that enhance the feeling of urgency and claustrophobia. The narrative shifts between past and present effectively building suspense and providing necessary context. Does it occasionally lapse into implausibility? Sure, but the story's fast pace ensures a compulsive read.
It’s full twists, some more predictable than others. A mid-story revelation cleverly alters the story’s direction. The twists are generally well-executed, though a few might stretch the bounds of believability. Nevertheless, they contribute to a thrilling and unpredictable ride.
In summary, it’s an engrossing thriller that explores the consequences of a seemingly benign decision. Ewan's ability to create a tense atmosphere, coupled with well-drawn characters and a rapid-fire pace, makes this a compelling read. Perfect for fans of twisty, edge-of-your-seat thrillers.
One Wrong Turn is out now - a huge thanks to the author, Macmillan, and NetGalley for the advanced copy of this book for review consideration. All opinions are my own.
I enjoyed the premise of this book and the beginning seemed intriguing, unfortunately it didn't pay off for me and the story got a bit lost along the way.
I would never stop to pick someone up in a scary road in the dark. With or without my husband. I know you should trust and hope that if it was you that Simone would stop. But after reading this - never will stop ✋
4 Stars from me
It's the stuff of nightmares isn't it, to be driving down an unknown road in the dark and then to see someone by the side of the road - in the middle of nowhere, in the dark - who clearly needs help. Or do they, every horror film you've ever watched will flit through your head, is it a trap, but what if it's not, you'd want someone to stop for you, what if you don't stop and then something bad happens to them. What if you do stop and then something bad happens to you?
Needless to say, wouldn't have been much of a story otherwise huh... Abi and Ben stop to help the lady stranded on the side of the road and life takes a somewhat sinister turn.
Fans of fast paced psychological thrillers will love this book which is full of anticipation, surprises and bootloads of tension as Abi and Ben get separated and try to save themselves and each other.
Loved this! So many twists and turns and the suspense and tension was there right from the start. I soon whizzed through this as it was short chapters which I love and the end of each one just kept me wanting to find out what happened next. Thanks to NetGalley for my ARC.
Can you just picture yourself driving down foggy unfamiliar roads when all of a sudden someone appears in front of your car and you have to swerve to avoid them. Sounds like a nightmare but this is only the beginning of the nightmare for Ben and Abi who are heading back home after a holiday in Cornwall.
This was one of those books that honestly gripped me right from the very start. Often with some books it can take a while for them to get going but that was certainly not the way in this one. I found this one to be a heart pounding and fast paced thriller from start to finish. There were a couple of twists that really knocked me for six. I could literally feel the tension as I raced through this superb read so eager was I to find out how everything would finish. This book never slowed down for me and each chapter was packed with tension. This was the first book I’ve read by this author but I most certainly will be reading his back catalogue as I was so impressed with this one,
What a brilliant, exciting, breathtaking and unforgettable novel! With superb plotting, fascinating characters and beasutiful writing, Chris Ewan has excelled himself. Two couples, Cornwall in the fog, a vehicle breakdown, the offer of a lift. But is anything what it seems? Can anyone be believed? Stunning!
I loved this book! Abi and Ben are driving home after a weekend in Cornwall. It's very foggy. Suddenly, a man appears at the side of the road. They don't stop but a bit further along they come across a broken down car. A woman with a baby seat is standing by the car. Ben persuades Abi to give a lift to the woman, her husband and the baby. This turns out to be the worst decision they have ever made! This is an absolute roller coaster of a read and I couldn't put it down!
Thanks to NetGalley for a preview copy.

When it comes to psychological thrillers, C.M. Ewan's *One Wrong Turn* is a masterclass in tension and suspense. From the moment Abi and Ben took that fateful wrong turn on a foggy country road, I was hooked, my heart racing with every twist and turn.
The story begins innocently enough: a couple, Abi and Ben, driving home after cutting short their weekend getaway. Their argument is familiar, almost comforting in its normalcy until it isn't. The atmosphere changes dramatically when a man appears in the middle of the road, waving a torch. Abi swerves to avoid him, setting off a chain of events that kept me glued to the pages.
Ewan expertly captures the creeping dread that comes with being stranded on dark, isolated roads. Abi’s initial instinct to drive past the broken-down car is relatable, tapping into the primal fear of the unknown. But the sight of a woman holding a baby seat with a child in it tugs at the heartstrings, creating a moral dilemma that sets the stage for the rest of the story.
The decision to help the stranded family seems noble, yet there's an underlying sense of foreboding that Ewan masterfully maintains. Once the strangers are inside Abi and Ben’s car, the suspense increases to an almost unbearable level. The narrative constantly had me questioning: Who are these people? What are their intentions? Would I have made the same choice?
Abi and Ben’s internal struggles and their dynamics as a couple are portrayed with such depth that their actions and reactions feel genuine. The psychological aspect of the story is as compelling as the external danger, as both Abi and Ben struggle with guilt, trust, and the instinct to protect themselves and each other.
C.M. Ewan’s writing shines in the way he builds tension. Every interaction with the strangers is fraught with suspicion and unease. The foggy, isolated setting becomes a character in itself, adding to the claustrophobic feel of the narrative. The plot moves at a brisk pace, with enough twists to keep even the most seasoned thriller readers guessing.
Without giving away too much, the climax of *One Wrong Turn* is both shocking and satisfying. Ewan ties up the story with a resolution that left me contemplating the decisions and moral choices of the characters long after I finished reading.
This book is a riveting psychological thriller that will keep you on the edge of your seat. C.M. Ewan has crafted a tale that explores the darkness lurking just beneath the surface of ordinary life, and the terrifying consequences of one wrong decision. If you enjoy stories that combine intense suspense with deep psychological insight, this book is a must-read.
One Wrong Turn is a fantastic page turner which I couldn’t get enough of. There were lots of plot twists which i mostly didn’t see coming, and it had a very satisfying storyline that didn’t leave big gaping holes and unanswered questions. I really enjoyed the book and will definitely be reading more by this author.
The author seems to specialise in these 'normal people in extraordinary/dangerous situations' storylines and this was more of the same.
Reasonably enjoyable, chugs along with various layers being revealed as we go.
There was far too much descriptions of driving and roads and reptition of internal monologues that didn't really go anywhere.
And the 'villains' did seem to be a little crackpot, risking a huge amount including murder etc for a relatively small sum of money, it did all seem a little extreme. But... easy to read and nothing too troubling, those who enjoy potboiler thrillers should get along with it.
