It was great to be back with the Carter Family and all their gangland ‘friends’. This is the first book in the Carter next generation series and I was hooked on the story right from the very beginning. Looking forward to reading the second book now .

A brilliant gangland thriller by the talented Kerry Kaya. I've always enjoyed this lady's books and this one is just as good, a fantastic book that sets the scene for another outstanding new series featuring all our favourite lovable villians. Excited to find out what's in store for them all next!

Downfall is the first title in an explosive new series about the Carter family from best-selling author Kerry Kaya.

Jimmy Carter has decided that the time has come for him to call it quits. As head of the family firm, it’s time to step aside and let the next generation take over. However, the only member of his family who wants to step up is hotheaded Jonny who is reckless, unpredictable and so irresponsible, he could end up costing his whole clan dear.

Meanwhile, Carla Carter is still not over the fact that her mother had cheated on her beloved father, Sonny, so she has put in motion a twisted plan of vengeance by stealing from the man who stole everything from her. However, Carla needs to think long and hard about her plan for revenge because one false step and the whole business could go up in smoke.

Will Jonny and Carla let their ruthless ambitions and unshakeable pride get in the way of the family empire? Can they manage to keep a tight hold on the reins of the business? Or will the Carter clan end up with nothing?

Gangland thriller fans have come to rely on Kerry Kaya to deliver a fast-paced, gritty, exciting and jaw-dropping tale of family, violence and secrets and in Downfall she has once again penned a superb page-turner where the shocks come so thick and fast they will leave readers reeling. A fantastic gangland thriller that has me eager to read the next titles in the series, Downfall is another must-read by Kerry Kaya.

Downfall by Kerry Kaya and the Carters are back! and it's great to see them back again and you know it can only be trouble Jimmy Carter especially as Jimmy is currently the head of the family firm. But, Jimmy Carter has decided it’s time for him to step down and for one of his other brothers to lead the family. Except only one of his brothers wants the job is the youngest Carter brother is the reckless hot-head, Jonny.

Carla Carter has never forgiven her tramp of a mother for cheating on her beloved dad, Sonny and she’s determined to avenge him in the most perfect by stealing from the man who stole everything from her.

This could mean their downfall!

When her Uncle Jimmy would never consider Carla’s plan especially as its way too risky and dangerous. But Jonny needs to prove himself. He thinks this job could be the one to secure their future and prove his name as the new top dog.

But with Carla and Jonny both blinded by their own pride, the rest of the Carters think they are making a deadly mistake. And instead of securing their family legacy, this one job could cost the Carter family everything.........

WoW this book is a roller coaster ride and a great first instalment to the new Carter family series.....I loved it and looking forward reading the next book within this series.

I highly recommend it. Another 5 star read and a great holiday read.

Big Thank you to Netgalley and Boldwood Books for the ARC.

So, l've read a few books by the author, which l've loved, but I don't think l've managed to read any in order or by series, so I recognised most of the characters but not how or where they all fitted in together. So l'm setting myself a challenge to catch up on them all fully!
The grittiness/violence and downright darkness were spot on, the new Carters seem even crazier than the originals (hard to believe!!). I also throughly enjoyed that alongside the underhanded behaviour and gangland warfare, the were tones of loyalty, romance and forgiveness.
This is a must for readers who love violence and heists, add it to your TBR!

I am a fan of Kerry and her work and have been for quite a while now. I must admit that I haven't quite caught up with everything that she has written but I hope to change that in the not too distant future. I read the synopsis of 'Downfall', which is the first book in a new series featuring the next generation of the Carter family, and it certainly sounded like the sort of book I have come to expect from Kerry - a gritty, gripping, tense and dramatic read. Well it was that and so much more. I thoroughly enjoyed reading 'Downfall' but more about that in a bit.

As with all of Kerry's books, the synopsis was enough to grab my attention and draw me in. As soon as I started reading, I quickly realised three things : firstly that I was reading something special, secondly that I was going to become addicted to the story and thirdly that I would find it rather difficult to put the book to one side for any length of time. I was spot on with all three predictions. I started reading and basically didn't stop for a good three hours. I was blown away by the story and couldn't turn the pages of the book quickly enough. My Kindle wasn't exactly glued to my hand but it might as well have been because it travelled everywhere with me. I couldn't bear to miss a single second of the story. I had to keep reading to see if the story was going to develop in the way in which I thought it would. The more of the book that I read, the more I wanted to read and the quicker the pages seemed to turn. I was so wrapped up in the story that I didn't realise just how quickly the time was passing and just how quickly I was getting through the book. All too quickly I reached the end of 'Downfall'. I found 'Downfall' to be a gripping, tense and dramatic story with twists and turns aplenty. The story certainly kept me guessing and kept me on the edge of my seat throughout.

'Downfall' is superbly written but then I have come to expect nothing less from Kerry Kaya. Kerry has an easy going writing style that is easy to get used and easy to get along with. In fact you could say that Kerry's books read like a conversation between (slightly scary) friends rather than reading a book. I hope that makes sense. For me, the story hit the ground running and maintained a fairly fast pace throughout. Kerry clearly cares about her characters and this shines through in the very vivid and realistic way in which she describes them. She makes her characters seem as real as you and I. I have to be honest and say that some of the characters scared the doo doo out of me. Reading 'Downfall' felt like being an a rather scary and unpredictable rollercoaster ride with more twists and turns than you would find on a 'Snakes & Ladders' board.

In short, I thoroughly enjoyed reading 'Downfall' and I would definitely recommend it to other readers. I hope to read much more of Kerry's work in the future. The score on the Ginger Book Geek board is a very well deserved 5* out of 5*.

The Carters are back and it is a welcome return for those of us who loved the original books
This time the focus is on diamonds, diamonds that they want….from their frenemies the Carters, old rivalries resurface and truces are forgotten as they plot and plan to snatch them

It is as always from this author a character rich story ( I wonder if a ‘cast list’ would be good at the beginning of the book?) and full on action gangland families at war thriller with excitement all the way through and leaving it nicely ready for the next book in the series

It is always a gamble to go back to a family and start a new series but this worked and worked well and it was a good reunion for readers once again thrust into the murky underworld of this family, full of emotion and drama and action

The Carters are back.......
There's a changing of the guard, who is to become the new carter family boss???? Johnny? Mitchell? Sonny? Carla is out for revenge and makes a plan and sells the idea to the rest of the family firm . Is what carla is asking an easy job? Why does she want revenge? Diamonds but the carters have never done a diamond job before...... CAn the Carters pull it off? This is gangland at its best, I love the carter family and their extended families.. there are lies, deceit,, violence all in a days work for the Carters. Action packed, lots of twists around many different corners. Excellent read !!!! It's 5🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟 from me. If you like gangland and you havnt read a jerry kaya book, you must. You won't be dissapointed

I’d like to thank Boldwood Books and NetGalley for giving me the opportunity to read ‘Downfall’, The Carters: Next Generation Book 1 written by Kerry Kaya, in exchange for my honest and unbiased review.

Jimmy is head of the Carter family business but has now decided to retire and hand over the reins to someone else. Although his twin brothers Sonny and Mitchell are next in line, he chooses Jonny who’s more than a little headstrong, reckless and arrogant. Sonny’s daughter Carla is pleased with Jimmy’s decision especially as she has a risky and dangerous scheme that result in not only making them a fortune but will also be pay-back for the man she hates who broke up her parents’ marriage.

‘Downfall’ is the first in a new gangland series with the Carter family who could be facing the downfall of their business if Carla’s scheme doesn’t go to plan. The story is involving with interesting characters, and there’s plenty of action, drama and suspense that’s kept me jon the edge of my seat. This is a complex action-packed thriller with twists and turns and tension that increases as the story continues and has kept me reading.

I really like this authors books and enjoy gangland books. Unfortunately I struggled with this one a bit. There were so many characters mentioned who were all related and I found it very difficult to work out who was who and how they were related. It did take away some of the enjoyment of this book. Overall it was a good enjoyable read but I just expected more.

I am a fan of the Carter and Tempest families from previous series the author has written, this one has a mix of the two as well as extended family and other families. A vast cast and a daring robbery amidst daily life for the gang members in this first book of a new series.

With such a large cast this took me a while to get into, introducing the various members of the families involved and how they link together did take the edge off this book at the beginning for me. But, knowing this author's writing as I do, I knew it would soon pick up and the story "proper" as such would then get going. And boy did it ever!

When Carla Carter overhears something about diamonds from her stepdad she finally sees a chance to get back at him. Jonny Carter is the ideal person to approach about stealing these diamonds as he has just been given the family's leadership, the businesses and the other illegal activities they are part of. Seeing this as a chance to make his mark he decides to take the risk. Diamonds have always been bad luck for the family and now he is in charge he thinks he has the chance to break the bad luck.

There is a rival gang and these are notorious, vicious and slightly warped in the way they treat people and think of others. To be fair though I think anyone that lives in this type of environment has to have something in them that is broken. With everyone being on edge there are frayed tempers, words exchanged and with this is bitterness and this makes it easy for people to do rash things or take undue risks.

The author has provided another amazing story, it is complex but reads well and there are many twists to keep you on your toes. A lot is going on in this book and for me it was exciting and dangerous. But there are also some very poignant moments when you read about loyalties and respect. Families are in danger and there are going to be risks, so trying to keep all the potential weak spots covered is going to be a challenge. This becomes evident towards the latter stages of the book.

This is a fabulous start to the series, it would have been handy to have a quick run-down of the families at the beginning. I do think this would have made it a little easier to get to grips with all the characters. But, as I mentioned earlier, when I got to know them it became easier. I did find that some of the similarities in names were another thing that caught me out.

If you are looking for a series that is full of excitement, the unexpected, danger and action-packed and unpredictable then this is a book you want to keep an eye out for. It is one I would happily recommend.

Kerry Kaya has done it yet again with another great book and a brand new series about the Carter family. This time round the focus is on the younger members of the family. I was totally hooked from the first sentence in this gritty gangland thriller that revisits past characters but with Jonny Carter now in charge they take a new direction and that’s stealing diamonds. Not only that they are planning to take them from rivals the Tucker brothers. This is fast paced and has plenty of twists, turns and violence, although the violence is never too graphic. Can’t wait for the next one! Thanks to Boldwood Books and Netgalley for the ARC

A new generation of the infamous Carter family are properly introduced in this first book of a new series, albeit a continuous of the Carter saga you could read this as a stand-alone/ book 1.
Took a few chapters for me to remember the whole clan, but this is a good gritty gangland thriller which I’d you like the works of Martina Cole, Mandasue Heller amongst others you will enjoy. Looks forward to book 2.

It was great to be back with the Carter family again but I did struggle to keep up with all the characters. I should've gone back on the last book.
It was a great story though with the usual naughtiness that we live about kerry's books

Another fabulous read from Ms Kaya. I loved revisiting the Carter family but admit I really struggled to keep up with the family tree there are just so many of them! A fast paced story with much grit I enjoyed this book.
