It was a little tricky to read in digital format and a possibly for that reason it seemed a little dry. However I thought it very practical and useful to both children and parents. What I really like is that it is child centric and looks at simple but effective ideas and activities that can give immediate relief or comfort or just have them taking even the tiniest of steps in the direction of having a run of 'good days'. It recognises the challenges faced by these children and their families but is not stuck in playing the victim - rather taking a proactive approach in the here and now.
I'd recommend it as a reference for parents and for both preschools and schools to have a copy for teachers to work with.
Excellent and informative book full of practical support for SENDCO'S and anyone with an interest in supporting additional needs in schools
Highly recommend.
Very accessible book.
This is a very accessible read for educators and families. It is filled with useful information and strategies to support those who access learning in a different way. I found it really helpful to be able to look at sections about the issues being experienced rather than by diagnosis. I will be highly recommending this to the staff and families at my school.
As an ex-head and SENDCo, I was interested to read this book. This book provides a great starting point for newcomers to education. Full of helpful information regarding different aspects of SEND, it also contains strategies for support as well as QR codes linking to specific activities. It won't solve all problems but, at a time when SEN services and support are difficult to access it gives a sound starting point. All ECTs would benefit from receiving a copy!
Quite simply, this is a wonderful book packed full with useful strategies. Everyone who works with children should read this and will be buying a copy to leave in our staffroom, having already recommended it to colleagues. I'm proud to work in a school that already implements many of these ideas but there is always room to learn, develop and, ultimately, understand more. The children in our care deserve and need it. Oh, and if there's ever a campaign to get rid of pen licences, I'll be right behind it. Thanks to Netgalley and Georgina Durrant
This book provides a comprehensive guide to many SEND categories, how they may present and strategies to support children in the Primary setting. Further reading is recommended at the end of each chapter should you wish to explore the issues on more detail. I feel this book would be useful to both parents and educational professionals as a starting point to understanding the diverse needs of children and how we can all support them.
Just when I was thinking, after having read wonderful book on neurodiversity (not SEND strategies), that I should lower my expectations, this book has exceeded my expectations.
If you are an educator or someone who needs SEND strategies in their lives, you might have come across many well-meaning but unoriginal books out there. While I am glad that the number of publications are increasing, I seek fresh, nuanced, and new material suggesting new strategies, less frequently discussed methods, common and established advice in detail and including interesting and relevant case studies.
This book delivers exactly what it promises; SEND strategies, organised well, and in an engaging manner, with QR codes to the YouTube links of the videos, explaining the relevant strategies. The videos are explained by Durrant herself and her delivery is equally engaging.
This is one of the non-preachy, neurodiversity, difference affirming, most positive published on the topic, and it still contains new, fresh, up-to-date, science-based, child-oriented, underdog-supportive and hopeful information out there.
If you teach children with SEND, if you parent children with SEND, or if you were one yourself, you will be grateful for the perspectives this book offers. I felt reconnected with all people, pupils, loved ones I know who need(ed) such support. A must-read guide for all primary school educators, parents and anyone interested in the topic.
Despite the challenges depicted in the first pages, this book shines a beacon of hope in what can often feel like an overwhelming journey. Through its candid exploration of the complexities involved, readers are guided with compassion and insight into effective approaches for supporting these remarkable children. Each page offers a reminder that even amidst the shadows of adversity, there are rays of positivity and progress waiting to be embraced. A must-read for educators and caregivers that need or simply want to help the children under their care in the best way possible.
