An interesting take on familiar tropes, Margo is 19 when we meet her and finds herself pregnant after an affair with her college professor. She decides to keep the baby even though everyone tells her not to (she explains it felt like the right thing to do) but then has to work out how to support them both financially. Her previous gig waitressing fires her when she cant find/afford suitable childcare, which leads her to discovering Only Fans.
The story POV jumps between first and third person which can be a little confusing, once I got used to that though the story itself trips along. Margo's mom is engaged to a youth pastor and determined to maintain the more respectable image she has cultivated for herself, while her dad reappears on the scene needing a place to stay and sort himself out, an ex-wrestler with substance abuse issues.
Margo does a lot of self reflection and is determined to make the best of what she has and use what she can to support herself and her son, she recognises her parents are flawed people and has empathy for them while also at times wishing they would 'parent' more.
The characters work together well and while everyone has their own flaws and issues it makes for a great story - I was rooting for Margo throughout

At times quite witty, warm and exploring a range of different themes, this was a good read and the variety of chaotic characters made it very enjoyable.
Thank you to the publisher and NetGalley for the chance to read this ARC.
Margo's Got Money Troubles by Rufi Thorpe is uggo laugh funny! Seriously, I was not expecting what I got and yet I enjoyed every page. I thought it was a story about an influencer hitting it big (I missed the OF reference in the synopsis) and tbh, the humour within is absolutely my jam!
Margo Millet is 20, she's just found out she's pregnant by her college professor and money is hard to come by. Her father is an ex wrestler who is in recovery, but the best person to have in her corner to win her audience
However, is internet fame all it is cracked up to be?
Funny, sweet, and endearing, awonderful read
Thank you to NetGalley, Hodder & Stoughton | Sceptre and Rufi Thorpe for this gorgeous ARC. My review is left voluntarily and all opinions are my own
At 19, Margo finds herself pregnant by her much older, married English professor. With little more than a desire to feel like a good person, she decides to keep the baby. Her life is far from ordinary: her mom, a former Hooters waitress, is now the judgmental fiancée of a youth pastor, while her dad, an ex-WWE superstar with a history of drug use, has a new life that doesn't include her. To make ends meet, Margo signs a non-disclosure agreement and even gets paid to judge explicit photos—she’s willing to do whatever it takes.
Despite the outlandish situations, this book manages to feel both realistic and off-the-wall. It walks the line perfectly, never going overboard but delivering just the right amount of everything. It’s laugh-out-loud funny, heartfelt, sad, hopeful, and undeniably quirky.
Loved it. Rufi has created a fabulous hero in Margo, a woman determined to find her way in the world and find her power even as the world disapproves every decision she makes. Pregnant by her feckless professor, Margo decides to keep the baby but it's not easy to survive as a young single mother with no job and no qualifications. Her goal is to make enough to provide for her son and build a safe life for them both. The unexpected is OnlyFans. Rufi does a brilliant job of skewering the issues around sex work; moral outrage, consent, exploitation, and choice, it's enlightening, moving and hilarious and I loved every second of it.

Margo's Got Money Troubles is a weird book to categorise. It's part family drama, as Margo's struggles with the reappearance of her prowrestling father and emotional distant mother, part contemporary fiction. Margo has to contend not only with a huge life altering decision and all the complexities that life throws with it, but also on her own self reflection and discovering who she is as a mother, friend and business mogul.
I liked Margo. She's great at self reflecting, understanding that she isn't perfect, but determined. She's intelligent but lacks the opportunities given to her rich friends, she's business savvy and creative, using her father's background to her advantage in setting up an online persona. And she's also kind at heart. She loves her son Bodhi, and her parents too, acknowledging the sacrifices they made for her while also admitting they're not that great as human beings. She's a naive character, not entirely world wise, and this is made the more apparent in her interactions with KC and Rose as well as Mark. All of them use her to some extent, to better themselves, but Margo also has some self awareness to accept this and use them in return to her advantage.
The narrative style does take some getting used to, as Rufi Thorpe uses a mixture of first and third person to construct her story. However the reason for this choice is touched upon within the narrative, and it makes for an interesting read. Is Margo a reliable narrator? Who is she telling her story to? A future Bodhi? Or to herself?
Margo's is a story that's entirely realistic, with an added sprinkle of wrestling lore added in that made this a captivating read.
This book was a hilarious breath of fresh air!! Who knew a book about OF could be so touching. Plus who doesn't love a pokemon themed d**k rating. I cackled with laughter!
I absolutely loved it!
Without a doubt, the best book I've read and probably will read, this year (maybe this decade). As charming and funny as it was insightful and heartrending... an absolute must.
I have seen this book being highly recommend all over social media and obviously my FOMO kicked in so I had to read it to see if it was as good or as funny as everyone kept saying it was.
Margo’s Got Money Troubles is the story of Margo, a university student who finds herself pregnant at the age of 19 after a brief and rather unsatisfactory affair with her married English Professor. Determined to raise the baby alone despite everyone telling her not to ruin her life, she has no alternative but to drop out of school and try to earn money to survive. With little work experience, no childcare and not many options open to her, she creates an OnlyFans account which results in some toxic and morale dilemmas and several amusing incidents.
The book took a little longer for me to get into as the narration switches into third person and back to first person throughout and although it is Margo narrating both versions it did slow down my reading flow.
With a vast cast of fabulous characters, from Jinx, a retired professional wrestler, recovering drug addict and absent father to her very dysfunctional relationship with her mother and new stepfather, her wonderful housemate and new friends from Only Fans, Margo’s Got Money Troubles has enough backstories and personalities to keep the reader invested.
Did I laugh out loud? No, but there were lots of humorous situations and amusing scenarios to raise the odd smile. Overall I did enjoy the book and found myself rooting for Margo throughout.
Apple TV has commissioned this book into a mini series staring Nicole Kidman and Elle Fanning which should air in 2025 and I really do look forward to watching it.
⭐⭐⭐⭐
I picked this up based on the cover and the title with little idea of what it was about, and boy I was wonderfully surprised and now I am also TEAM MARGO!
What's it about?
Margo is a young, newly single mother, struggling with life, adulthood, and financially. So turns to OnlyFans as an experiment and last resort, unexpectedly finding success and self-discovery through her online persona, while navigating motherhood and a complex relationship with her estranged father.
What did I think?
- I absolutely adored the main character Margo that Thorpe has created, she's complicated, what some may call a "train wreck", and she's caring, she's determined, she's sweet and funny and I miss her!
- This is a heartbreaking, yet hopeful insight into the desperation a new young single mother feels after an affair with her college professor that leaves her pregnant with little to no support.
- It's about Only Fans, TikTok, pro-wrestling, AND how ultimately we judge people, and decide who gets to live independently or not.
- All of this is done with immense tenderness and humour.
- Margo's dad (Jinx) who she was estranged from re-enters her life and although it's a challenging relationship it's ultimately one that surprises you.
- This book is unique, surprising, emotional, and funny with a strong feminist at heart.
- This story and the characters will stay with me for a while after reading and for me, that's a sign of a good goddamn book!
This is my first and will not be my last Rufi Thorpe book.
AFTER A WILD RIDE? PICK UP MARGO’S GOT MONEY TROUBLES NEXT 👀
Nobody could have prepared me for the true plot of this book - a real juicy and truly wild coming of age story!
👀 It’s about OnlyFans and TikTok and pro-wrestling, and a 20 year old single mother whose baby was a result of an affair with her English professor. BUT it’s also about the deeply agonisingly human story behind all this and the choices and judgements we make 🥺
I was so engrossed, Rufi has shown herself to be a master at creating realistic, rich characters - characters who throughout keep handing you reasons to root against them....though you can’t help but love them - I promise you too will also be rooting each and every one of them! I wasn’t expecting to fall in love with this book! ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️💫
When I started this book I have to be honest I did consider skipping this one but I am so glad I didn’t. This is a brutally raw and honest story about a young girl who finds herself pregnant following an affair with her teacher. Even though everyone tells her not to she decides to keep the baby. After the birth Margo finds herself out of a job And roommates and a loss of what to do next. Throw in The surprise appearance of her ex wrestler father who Shes barely known her whole life And what follows Is a warm funny read that will restore your faith in human nature.
Completely delightful - funny, charming, original, funny and unpredictable. I loved every minute of this book and will be eagerly pressing it into the hands of readers all summer long
Thank you to the publishers for an advanced copy. The story begins with us meeting Margo who has gotten pregnant under not the greatest circumstances and despite everyone thinking she should get rid of the baby, she decides to keep it. She has quite a strange family life and the book which is narrated by Margo takes us through her dealings as a first time young mum. The book focuses a lot on her relationships or lack of them with her parents, father of the child and some friends. The book was spoiled for me as all of the messages between her and JB appeared as boxes instead of characters so had no idea what this part of the story was saying and feel I missed out on some of the storylines. Although I did enjoy the rest of the story and Margo and her Dad as characters

I found this darkly comedic coming-of-age family drama enjoyable. The author’s writing style is refreshingly raw, honest, and distinctive. Margo, the protagonist, is a train wreck you can't help but cheer for. At just 19 years old, she's naive, embarking on a brief affair with her college professor that results in an unexpected pregnancy. Despite the objections of her friends and an unsupportive mother, Margo decides to keep the baby. To make ends meet, she turns to OnlyFans, and with the unexpected support of her professional wrestler father, she quickly gains viral fame. The book balances humor with cringe-worthy moments as we witness Margo navigate through her immature and often regrettable choices.
A great book. Not at all what I expected but really enjoyed the read. Some great characters, and I rooted for Margo all the way through. Thanks to NetGalley and the publisher for the advance copy
‘Margo’s Got Money Troubles’ by Rufi Thorpe is a funny, emotional and refreshingly unique novel about twenty year old Margo, who decides to keep her baby after an affair with her college professor results in an unexpected pregnancy and soon learns how unsuitably the world is set up for single mothers. Fired from her job due to lack of appropriate and affordable childcare, and thrust into yet more financial uncertainty after two of her (nasty) roommates move out suddenly due to the inevitable noise of a newborn, she needs to find a way to make ends meet… fast. Turning to the internet, with the support of her remaining (nice) roommate Suzie and her ex-wrestler father, Margo soon finds lucrative opportunities on OnlyFans and has important decisions to make.
I loved the characterisation in this book! Of course Margo herself was loveable but I also thought Suzie was awesome and enjoyed most of the scenes with Margo’s dad Jinx. A key theme of the book was the importance of support from family and friends, even while others are rejecting your choices. At about the 50-60% mark, tension is introduced to the plot and the exploration of the legal system was very informative.
I’d definitely recommend this novel to anyone who wants a realistic, tumultuous and fresh read. I’m giving it 4.5 stars only because I found it a little slow to get going and I didn’t love the narrative styling, even though I could see its intent.
I received an advance Digital Review Copy of this book from the publisher Hodder & Stoughton via NetGalley. The opinions expressed in this review are my own.
Margo's Got Money Troubles by Rufi Thorpe
Margo is 20 years old and a single parent to her son Bodhi, following an affair with her college professor Mark. When she loses her waitressing job, Margo comes up with a plan to deal with her money troubles - an OnlyFans account. But this sets off a whole chain of events that Margo has to deal with.
This is the first book I've read by this author and I really enjoyed it. Margo is an interesting mix of intellingent and naive, with a street-wise survival instinct from being the only child of a single mother and an absent ex-professional wrestler father. A fascinating cast of characters and a really unique story. Very highly recommended.
Thank you to NetGalley and the publisher for an ARC of this book.
This book is just so random! I’ve never read anything like it and I’m not sure whether that’s a good thing or bad 😅 I probably should have read the blurb first, but I’m ultimately glad I didn’t so I could go into this without any expectations.
I’ll try to summarise the book but my review won’t do any justice to just how random but engaging I found it.
So, we follow Margo (the product of a one night stand between a Hooters waitress and a wwe wrestler), who is a college student who becomes pregnant with her professor’s baby. For all of her life she’s had to be pretty independent. Margo was raised primarily by a single mother who’s had to work consistently to provide for them. Her father, Jinx, an ex WWE wrestler (turned manager) waltzes in and out of Margo’s life when he’s not on the road or with his family (his wife and their kids).
The book ultimately tells you of the challenges Margo faces as she navigates being a young single parent in difficult circumstances with little to no support. We also see how she navigates all of the different relationships in her life, from family, friends to co-workers. An example of this is when Jinx unexpectedly becomes a more consistent presence in her life which comes with its benefits and challenges.
As readers we delve into the content creation world of OnlyFans, TikTok, and a dabble in YouTube. There’s also romance, drug addiction, entrepreneurship, betrayal, and robots. Really a bit of everything really.
The book is written a little differently as Margo is telling us about her life but often switches from first to third person and also acknowledges it as she does so.
However I must note that I found the sections where the author spoken about Mary as highly unnecessary and a little problematic.
I really don’t know if I liked this book or not, but ultimately it is nothing like I’ve ever read before and kept me engaged and unable to guess what would happen next.
