Thank you so much to the author and netgalley for the audiobook ARC. All thoughts and opinions are my own.
I really enjoyed how the narrator brought the story to life. She was very fun to listen to and kept me engaged the whole time. For the story itself I can just say it wasn't for me. I didn't really connect with the MC, she was just very annoying. I really wanted to like this one but just couldn't.
This is my first audio book by author Lex Croucher and it was a great listen.
With a love for anything like Bridgerton or Pride and Prejudice this sounded right up my street.
We meet main character Georgiana, she has moved to a new town to live her with her aunt and uncle, who to say the least are slightly boresome to her.
At another boring party, she meets the extremely interesting Frances and she introduces Georgiana to a whole new world.
This made me laugh, cringe and I thought it was great.
Light hearted fun. Thanks to the author, netgalley and publisher for allowing me an ARC in exchange for my honest review.
what a bloody book. lex has went and done it again, written another incredible book that i simply could not and would not put down.
simply perfection
I enjoyed this regency era Mean Girls and always love the queer representation that Lex Croucher often brings to life in her books. I will say I wasn’t getting Fleabag vibes from this and felt like it was rather predictable. The narrator was amazing and will definitely be looking into the other books she has worked on.
This was a really quick and easy read at the beginning, but would say there are heavier topics towards the end, especially around SA that I would want other readers to be aware of. Overall, I had fun with this but can’t say I would ever return for a reread.
I was always planning to read everything that Lex Croucher has already written and place her on the short list of authors that I would automatically pre-order any upcoming new releases for, based purely on how much I loved Gwen and Art are Not in Love. The 'Bridgerton meets Fleabag' quote made Reputation my next read. I loved it.
The regency feel was so authentic and the banter between the characters was incredible. The group of young people that the story centres around were so real and the relationship between them was authentic. Originally, they reminded me of arguably the best of the Bridgerton siblings, Eloise, but then the 'Mean Girls' aspect was introduced.
The whole story was so brilliantly depicted that it played like a film in my head - a film that I could view over and over as a comfort watch. I adored this wonderful tale of the darker side of the regency, recently-adulted crowds. The romance was glorious - full of banter and genuine respect and adoration - and the serious elements were dealt with perfectly - sensitively and the balance between not making light of them but not becoming too bleak was excellent.
An excellent read. I smiled and laughed and had my heart broken a little. The audiobook was narrated brilliantly too.
This was so much fun and really well written. I'd definitely recommend to anyone looking for a Bridgerton adjacent read and the narrator was excellent!
I so enjoyed the print version of this book--Mean Girls meets Jane Austen--and this audiobook was an excellent companion! The narration is strong and the character of Georgiana shines through.
This is witty and edgy, Austen with even more bite and modern sensibilities that blend in seamlessly with this Regency setting. Well developed characters, bright and witty dialogue, strong characters and character development and an overall engaging and entertaining story.
Croucher is an auto request for me--every book is splendid and this debut was absolutely brilliant.
The narrator, Bessie Carter, was just splendid. Totally captured the characters and tone of this book.
This book had a bit of a slower start, but I'm glad I pushed through it. Bessie Carter is the main reason I did, since she made every word entertaining and every character easily distinguishable just by their cadence. Her as a narrator is truly the highlight of this book. 'Reputation' relies heavily on the 'Mean Girls' plot, and though I didn't end up loving the Regina George of 'Reputation', I prefered the romance in this book to the one in the movie.
Please check the trigger warnings for this book, since it does contain rape (not on page), attempted sexual assault (on page), and other violent scenes and language.
A thoroughly enjoyable period romp, Lex Croucher’s books never disappoint.
Reputation was a bit darker than other books I have read by this author, as it explored differences even within the upper class at the time, alcohol/drug use, peer pressure, and the main character was very impressionable.
I can’t say most of the characters were likeable, but they were clearly written to be that way and I did thoroughly enjoy the main character’s growth as the book progressed.
I thoroughly enjoyed this audio book production of Reputation by Lex Croucher. The narrator is absolutely brilliant and really brought the characters and story to life. I think I would have enjoyed it less if I’d read it as the narrator was that good!
This is a fun regency story following Georgiana who finds herself left behind by indifferent parents at her aunts. What starts off as a dull summer, soon escalates into a raucous and often scandalous one as she, in very Mean Girls style, makes friends with Francis Campbell, the Regina George of this piece.
The characters are really engaging. Georgiana was a great main character, with heaps of flaws and lots of redeeming features to balance them out. My favourite characters were Betty and Thomas and I’m not sure that Georgiana deserved either of them but she works hard to do so. Francis is a brilliant, witty and often vile queen bee.
The writing is excellent and very witty. It has a brilliant, sharp Austen-esque style of observation which I really enjoyed and really endeared me to Georgiana.
The book does cover some quite dark themes, which felt a little surprising in a more light hearted genre. I would say though, that I expected this to be a romance and while there is romance it is very much secondary to Georgiana’s character development and friendship storyline.
Overall, a great audio book and I would really recommend it. I hope Betty gets a book.
I am torn between liking this book and putting it in the meh category. It seemed more in the level of a ya book and brings the concept of making good choices to the forefront quite well.
Georgiana is a middle class girl sent to her aunt and uncles house. She meets Frances who introduces her unapologetically to several vices, fast friend set, drunkeness, weed, sex. And then there is Thomas Hawksley a reserved man who captures Georgianas attention. What will be her choice, being part of a crowd that excites her but also makes her uncomfortable or going down the safer path?
The writing is very modern. The narration was pretty good with the derision, excitement, sadness all coming through quite well. Worth reading of you're tbr is lacking and you really need something to keep you entertained.
Lex Croucher's writing style is memorable from the start in 'Reputation', catching interest quickly and setting the stage for what became an interesting look at the Regency period. And shenanigans ensue, naturally! While the book was definitely darker than the brightly coloured cover and marketing might make it appear at first, the final chapters (particularly the last confrontation) felt cathartic and left me far more satisfied with how most of the conflict was resolved.
The narrator was an excellent choice for this novel!
The story was like Mean Girls written by Jane Austen and I really loved it. In the Bridgerton hype era, reading, or more accurately listening to Bessie Carter's spectacular narration, I wanted to devour it all the more. While I can't quite say it was 5 stars, there was something absent for me, the narration simply elevated what was already a great and enjoyable story and set of brilliantly awful characters
Following George on her foray into society was a really wild ride. Her new friends are certainly not good influences and they often bring out the worst in her, which is really frustrating to experience. I was anxiously waiting for her to see the light and eventually the time does come but after many repetitive parties, heavy drinking, and substance abuse. This is very much a narrative about society and the darker sides of it and so not the easy read I'd been hoping for. A lot of the characters are unlikeable, though George does at least have some redeeming moments. I did love Betty and Thomas - the two saving graces of the story. Betty is charming, and incredibly forgiving, and the perfect friend. Thomas is a brooding gentleman, riddled with grief, and less enamoured by society than he used to be. The letters exchanged between Thomas and George were one of the highlights for the novel, being sharp and amusing to read. The audiobook narrator was well chosen and though I perhaps didn't love the book, I certainly enjoyed its narration.
I received a free copy of this book. All views are my own.
A fun, (mostly) light-hearted tale of the perils of class and female friendship. I listened to the audiobook version of this and really enjoyed the narration. Slight sticking point was that I spent most of the book disliking the main characters.
If Jane Austen were alive now and was a bit edgy this would be how she'd write :D Very funny writing and sharp wit. I loved the romance between Georgiana and Thomas , but the character of Frances was annoying from the first, and I felt too much time was spent on the unlikeable "mean girl" characters. I found it frustrating that the characters that deserved comeuppance didn't really get it, leaving me somewhat unsatisfied at the end. That said, I would definitely read more by the author and the 3.5 stars are very solid ones - at points throughout I thought it would be a 4.5. The narrator, Bessie Carter, was excellent and did an absolutely brilliant job.
I was promised Mean Girls meets Jane Austen - and this read completely delivered. As a big Austen fan, I’m always apprehensive reading any kind of similar fiction but was absolutely addicted to this read that is somehow juicer than Bridgerton while still respecting and nodding to all the tropes Austen fans love. Plot, pace and characters were all excellent and I thoroughly enjoyed this read - Lex Croucher will become a staple author for me if her other books are as amazing as this one! Narration was cracking too, highly recommend. Huge thanks to the author and publisher, for this advance review copy. Views my own. 5*
If you're looking for Bridgerton crossed with Pride and Prejudice crossed with the humour of Bridget Jones, Reputation is the book for you!
This book is a lot like if mean girls and pride and prejudice had a baby. The second half of the book was definitely more exciting than the first half but the scene had to be set. It was definitely a book I could sit in the sun relaxing and listening to; I didn’t realise there was so much drama in stories like this.
The narrator of this audiobook was outstanding; I have to say it really complemented the story and she was amazing at changing her voice for the different characters.
If Mean Girls and Emma had a baby, it would be Reputation by Lex Croucher. This book isn't as fluffy as marketed and explores darker themes than I originally anticipated. However, I loved this. Lex Croucher can do no wrong in my eyes.
