The plot is very simple and straightforward. As kids, Chi asked Tomo to marry him, she said 'okay, but not until you're bigger than me'. It became his life's goal to grow tall. Now they're both in high school and Tomo is way taller than Chi. I thought the idea was really cute, but the execution was mediocre. It was pretty sweet but also pretty boring. There isn't really any buildup of tension, and both characters are very bland. Their personalities revolve around wanting to marry each other. It also felt like we were being dropped in the middle of the story rather than at the beginning, maybe because there is no buildup or character development. Though, that might be because the mangaka has no idea whether this will become popular enough to continue the story or not, as I often see volume 1s of manga being pretty rushed like this. In any case, this was a sweet enough appetizer, but it definitely left something to be desired

So I had my doubts in the beginning of this one, male MCs are frequently a miss for me as the humor tends to be super immature, and initially, this looked like it could go that way.

But it turns out it is a really sweet romance. The characters are cute and likable. They do read a bit young (I thought the male MMC was like 10 years old until they clarified that he's 15)

Recommended.

I am very thankful for being able to real this adorable story thank you.

Now going in the story we learn about Chitose and from a very young age he announced that he will marry Tomo but he has a problem with that because she is taller than him and promised when he got bigger he would marry her. throughout the story we see chitose keeping his promise about wanted to marry Tomo. But I have a couple of problem with the plot don't get me wrong I think it wonderful about how boy loves his next door neighbor and want to get her but when there is no character development on how he wanted to impress her with being taller than her. It doesn't really bring anything to the table, all the characters are very beautifully drawn but I want to learn about Tomo and Chitose how they both met as kids and what made chitose like her more beside being beautiful and tall. Yes I understand she is very smart and nice to everyone but what else does she have other than that. I know she has hard time getting other guys to like her because of her height. I do wish get to see more of them together and not when other characters literally did something in order for them be in the same room.

"You must be this tall to propose" follows Tomo an Chitose who have been friends since childhood and live next door to each other. Chitose decided when he was young that he was going to marry Tomo, and she said "Sure, when you are bigger than me", which has proved to be an issue because she is super tall as a teenager! The story follows the 2 through their daily lives and focuses on Chitose's inner thoughts on how he can get bigger so Tomo will marry him, and eventually just how he can get her to like him. We don't really get much insight from Tomo, but presumably she likes him back.

While the story was cute, I can't imagine reading any more volumes. This seems like the story should have wrapped up in one volume, as it was very repetitive (Chitose likes Tomo, situation where he could tell her that but doesn't, rinse and repeat). It got boring after a while, and I've read the same story in other mangas with characters the same age and the same plot.

I liked the artwork and it was very clear that Tomo was much taller than Chitose, which enhanced the plot of the story. I think teens would enjoy this seeing as the characters are teens and they probably have similar experiences with first time dating and crushes. For me it was just average, as the story was nothing exciting or new, something I've read many times before. I'd still encourage a younger audience to give it a try!

Thank you so much to netgalley and kodansha comics for providing an arc in exchange for an honest review!

This was a really cute first volume read! I loved the characters and the misunderstanding between the two of them is hilariously innocent. Oki took Tomo's words literally, so now we get the cute angst of them skirting around one another. The relationship Oki has with Tomo's older brothers is so heart warming and I'm glad he has people in his corner rooting for him.

I do wonder where the story will go from here since she's in her last year of high school and he's in his first. Will we get to see her in college or will this only revolve around high school? I demand a wedding scene for the ending.

This was a very sweet first volume of what I expect to continue to be a darling series. Reminiscent of the manga Lovely Complex in that the main male lead is significantly shorter than the female lead, this series differentiates itself as these two already fawn over each other and it has been that way for a long time. As childhood friends, the male lead Chitose proposed to his neighbor Tomo and neither have forgotten their promise. I look forward to seeing what this young almost-couple has in store for them!

This was such a cute story. I know it can be stupid, but I love romances with height differences. I love how this story switches the roles and makes the girl the taller woman in the relationship. I found these characters and their relationship to be so cute. It was a great read, and I hope the two of them get together in the end and both Chitose and Tomo learn to be confident in their heights.

You Must Be This Tall to Propose (volume 1) is a series of really short comics (only about 5-ish pages long) detailing a small dude Chitose who's head over heels for his childhood best friend Tomo. The only problem is, their childhood promise to marry once he got taller than her is pretty impossible with their heights? But with some missed communication and mutual, though unknown, interest, will they ever get together?

I think for me it's been a while since I ready anything with fan service so the focus on Tomo's breasts and Chitose falling into them not once, but twice! in this single volume was tiring for me. It's cute, with a bunch of cute characters who are friends/relatives, so I do hope there's less objectification of Tomo's body in the future (also they could have gone all out and made her more midsized/plus sized too?). I probably won't keep up with this series, although it was a cute read.

Thanks to Kodansha and NetGalley for the eARC in exchange for review!

Super cute and wholesome shoujo. The manga follows Chitose and Tomo who are neighbors and are childhood friends. As a young child, Chitose proposes to Tomo who rejects him and tells him she will only marry him once he is taller than her. He makes a promise to her that he will become taller, which I found super cute. Their bond was really wholesome and sweet and I love how Tomo's brothers basically adopted him into the family when he was younger. Although the focus on Tomo's large breasts irked me, I know this type of fan service is very common in manga/anime so I brushed it off.

Sweet and cute. Chitose has had a crush on his neigbour Tomo since he was five. She’s two years older and by the time they’re in high school, thirty centimetres taller than Chitose. Which is bad for him, because she said he’d have to be taller than her before she’d consider him. She meant taller than she was at seven, but he took it literally. Now he’s desperate to grow to win her heart.

The story consists of short chapters about their school and family life. They’re cute and fun, and quick to read. The relationship doesn’t really advance anywhere in the first volume, and it looks like it’ll take a while before Chitose has enough courage to confess his feelings.

You must be this tall to propose vol.1 is a funny and sweet start to a chill romantic comedy. The stakes seem rather low and the main couple clearly likes and respects each other. I really love to read romantic comics where they both clearly like each other especially in low-stakes settings like childhood friends to lovers / high school. I definitely recommend it to anyone looking for something fun and light to read.

This was so cute! We follow Chitose & Tomo who are neighbors and have been close since they were children. At the age of five, Chitose proposes to Tomo, and she responds by saying that she will marry him when he's bigger than her. He takes this literally and vows to grow taller than her.

I really love these two and love that they've been friends since they were children. I'm a huge fan of childhood friends to lovers, so I'm excited to see their relationship unfold!

thank you in advance to Netgalley & Kodansha for providing me with an e-arc in exchange for an honest review!

stop. this was so adorable!!! this is actually one of my favourite types of couples (and it heavily reminds me of lovely complex which is one of my all-time favourite manga series). i feel like this series was more fluffy and cute as there isn't too much romantic moments! however i still really enjoyed it and Chitose & Tomo are both such loveable characters!

also really enjoyed the rest of the characters, they were all memorable in their own way and had a bit to add to the story.

i can't wait to read the second volume & honestly i want this series on my shelf!

**please note that the formatting of the chapters/story is not your usual manga (there's 17 chapters if i remember correctly)! it's more of those small snippets/short glimpses of the character's day (i enjoy these types of stories but it may not be everyone's cup of tea).

Very cute first volume. Loved Tomo's brothers the best! I'm interested to see where the series goes and I would hope that eventually there will be some points about misogynistic relationship expectations (i.e. that men have to be taller than women).

An almost cute romance about a guy named Oki who, as a young child, proposed to his neighbor, Tomo. Tomo tells Oki that she'll marry him when he's taller than her. Though she has a different meaning than his understanding, he takes it to mean that he literally needs to be taller than her. 10 years later Oki is significantly shorter than Tomo, but still wants to marry her someday. The romance and characters are typical for a basic shojo manga. The biggest issue I have, though, is the regular focus on Tomo's large chest. I am just not interested in that sort of thing, especially when it takes up much of the focus in the story.

Thank you Netgalley.
Readers please note: while I did receive this for free to review, that will not impact my rating in any way.
This manga is a rom com about two neighbors who grew up together.
Chitose “chi” and tomoee “Tomo ” are high school students, but Time is older. Five years ago, Chi promised to marry her once he was bigger. Hence the title “you must be this tall to propose.” It’s cute as the two navigate their feelings for each other.

This is the first volume of the manga, so there isn’t a ton of character development or world building, but it’s only 133 pages.

I’m a very fast reader, and managed to read the whole thing in one sitting (approximately 45 minutes)

I suspect this is an English translation. There is still Japanese text present. This wasn’t an issue for me because I can read Japanese fairly well. For those who aren’t familiar with Japanese, footnotes are provided with brief explanations about suffixes, food, and culture terms that the reader may be unfamiliar with, which was nice to see. This isn’t what I’d usually pick up in the store, but the art style reminded me of Arakawa. (FULLMETAL ALCHEMIST/ 鋼の錬金術師) and if I’m not mistaken, there is some influence of the art here. It was pleasant to look at. The text was situated and formatted nicely, and I found myself enjoying it in spite of not being the target audience for this book. I don’t have any issues with it, and if I had to be critical and knit pick, I’d say the occasional boob joke was done a couple times in one volume. While I don’t take offense to this, there may be some parents who find it distasteful. For those who do, Id recommended the parent flip through and decide for themselves, but there is nothing explicit a teen couldn’t read.

You Must Be This Tall To Propose Vol. 1 by Fumi Mifuyu is the first manga I read again since I was introduced to them like 10 years ago.
I don't know... the cover got my attention and when I read the blurb it sounded like something I'd definitely enjoy.
And oh my! How much I enjoyed it!
First I had to remember how to read a manga correctly, but then I couldn't read it fast enough. 😊🙏

Chitose and Tomo are neighbours. He likes her since he was a little boy, and he also promised Tomo to marry her once he's taller than her. 10 years later he's still not taller than Tomo... But is the height really that important when you like each other?!

Awwwww! This first volume was sooooo cuuuuute! 😍🥰
I devoured it and loved the beginning of the story of Chitose and Tomo!
How they treat each other and what they think about each other. Awwwww...
I definitely want more! 🙏😊❤️
It was soooooo entertaining and made me smile and swoon the whole time.
And her brothers are sooo cute too! 😍

Thanks a lot to Fumi Mifuyu and Kondansha Comics for this ARC via NetGalley (Read Now).
This is my honest review in my own words.
