Such a good family is a heartbreaking novel by Caitlin Weaver.
I couldn't put this book down and binge read it in a day. The story was easy to follow and heartbreaking in places and had a great cast of characters. The author's writing is beautiful. Overall a brilliant novel that I highly recommend, I can't wait to read more by the author.
💖 Thank you to netgalley, the author and publisher for my arc ebook copy of the book in exchange for an honest review.
A gripping novel told from various viewpoints of the two families involved. A tragic event pushes two women from different families apart. They were once best friends and now they have to do whatever it takes to defend their families.
A thought provoking and riveting read. Following each of the women and their children as they try to navigate their family life that has changed forever. I enjoyed this read, some readers might find the subjects addressed in it upsetting but I felt involved with all the characters and really wanted things to work out for them.
I hate giving poor feedback but unfortunate this book wasn’t for me - I gave up after a quarter way through it just didn’t hold my attention in - I felt it was very slow. Apologies but not one that I enjoyed
This is a thought provoking book, covering issues like rape, consent, the legal system, parenting, infidelity and general relationships . The situation that Summer and Knox ended up in is everyone's worst nightmare. The character I enjoyed the ,most was Archie, and his story gave a nice counter balance to the rest of the book. The multiple POVS worked well, and you could see the ripple effects that events had on the main characters. And of course, this is an age old issue, where does consent start and stop, especially in the tricky world of teenagers. Thanks to NetGalley for a copy to review.
Wow, what a hard topic to write about! I agree with some of the other reviews that this seemed more of a domestic drama than a thriller but regardless, I really enjoyed the writing style, the pace of the book, and the author did a great job of tackling a really difficult subject. It is told from multiple POV which really lends itself so well to this type of story.
The book covered so many topics and the author did a great job of weaving them all together. I'll definitely watch for more from Caitlin Weaver in the future.
Thank you to Netgalley and Storm Publishing for the ARC of this book.
What if your son is accused of assaulting your best friends daughter?
That is the main premise of this book, and it is told from different view points. I did feel like it was a bit of a cop out as to 'why' Knox had that kind of behaviour, this could have been explored deeper or in a different way.
Overall, it was still a good read, and the ending was satisfying enough
This book focuses on 2 main families. Eden and Lorrie are best friends. They were thrilled when Summer and Knox (Their oldest) started dating senior year leading up to graduation. They always talked about being grandmothers together. Unfortunately, one night's events changed all their lives and friendships. Truths about the families come to light and it's time to decide what to do about it.
Make sure you check the trigger warnings on this one. This one was a tough story to read. It shows that all though we look like a perfect family to most from the outside, it doesn't mean something isn't wrong behind closed doors. This story is told from different POVS from the main players in the book.
This was more of a domestic drama than a thriller for sure but the story was told well and the character development was on point. Caitlin Weaver did a great job with this one. It pulled at all the right strings in this situation. Would I have made the same decisions that the characters did? Probably not all of them but they did what they thought was best.
Thank you Net Galley for providing this arc to me in exchange for a review. Caitlin Weaver is one to watch for IMO.
Thank you Net Galley & Storm Publishing for the ARC!
5 ⭐️
This is one of the top books of 2024 for me. I was hooked right from the start and could not put this down. I loved the multiple points of view and my heart broke again and again.
A tragic story that shows the realties of the system and how the victim is re-traumatized throughout fighting for justice. Eden’s fight to help Summer based off of her own experience solidified every parent’s worst fear. My heart aches for this mom as she tried to do what she believed was best at every turn.
Caitlin’s ability to also show what Lorrie’s family was experiencing and the heartbreak of wondering if your children are capable of such things. By the end, I felt the heartbreak and frustration of these families falling apart. As parents of young children in our world, we worry about these situations and think of the what ifs, what can I do to keep them from this? How can I get my child to adulthood without the world hurting them. I think Caitlin captured these worries and reflections perfectly in this drama.
Archie’s storyline was one of the most captivating and all I wanted was the best for this poor forgotten middle child. Believing his brother may be this monster, but not being sure, while not realizing his father has these traits, all while navigating himself out of the dark space he has found himself in. All at the age of 14-15. I’d like to think, especially based off his last conversation with Summer, he is living a brighter life filled with laughter and less frog surgery.
This book will sit with me for a long time. I can’t wait to add a physical version of this book to my shelf.
Solid 3 read! Talk about a timely subject. The premise of the book was great and I loved all the character perspectives. Unfortunately the book just went on for too long and kind of took away from the story. This would make a great book club book.
Thank you, Netgalley, for the chance to read and review Such a Good Family before publication!
While the subject of this book was tough, it was well written. How far will a mother go to protect her children? Nobody actually knows until something terrible happens. I feel for both the mothers but the fathers were both very unlikeable. While Summer seems to have come to terms with what Knox did to her, I feel Knox did not receive any type of treatment for his actions. Overall, a well written story.
Two families ripped apart from years of friendships, due to an accusation.
This book proved that not all friendships can withstand family drama.
Knox is accused of harming his girlfriend and now their families are in a legal battle to get Knox placed somewhere.
I’ve never read a book from this author before but I was very invested in all the family drama and I needed to know what really had happened to Knox’s gf. Solid fast read.
Thanks netgalley and publisher for a chance to read this book for free in return for my honest opinion.
This book was SUCH an emotionally gripping novel. The way that Weaver was able to write and dive into the complexities of family dynamics and hidden secrets kept me glued to the pages. The story revolves around two mothers whose lives are upended by a serious accusation. One mother, thrilled about her son dating her best friend’s daughter, finds her world shattered when she discovers unsettling truths about her seemingly perfect family.
I cannot praise this book enough for its compelling, enthralling narrative and the way it captured my attention right from the start. I found myself torn between the two families and felt like I was invested thoroughly in the story. I definitely recommend it for anyone who likes domestic dramas, or anyone looking for a story that will make them feel deeply.
Wow! This book was amazing. The character development was phenomenal and the story sucked me in from the beginning.
Knox and Summer had been good childhood friends growing up and their moms had been best friends for 15 years. That all would soon change after their relationship blossomed into more and then the unthinkable happened. Knox was accused of sexual assault against Summer.
How far would you go to protect your child? How would you handle all this happening when the other parent is your best friend?
This book is full of family secrets and how two families deal with a situation that upends their lives.
I thoroughly enjoyed this book and Caitlin’s writing style. Thank you to NetGalley and Caitlin Weaver for the ARC.
Thank you Netgalley and Storm Publishing for an advanced copy. This review is my honest opinion.
Knox, son of Lorrie and Summer, daughter of Eden are in their last year of high school, live across the street from each other and are dating. BFF’s Eden and Lorrie are thrilled. The mother’s are already hearing wedding bells. Until one night when Summer says no, and Knox does not stop.
What follows is the story of how many others are affected by what happened that night. These two close families, the one neighbors and classmates all take sides. Mistakes are made and friendships are broken.
I loved that Summer eventually found the ability to be stronger than what happened to her without the blessings of her parents.
I’m sorry that Eden did not help Summer more because of what happened to her when she was a teenager.
I thought Summer’s father cared more about outsiders than what his own daughter was going through.
Lorrie wanted to believe Knox, but yet, she couldn’t be sure.
It took everything within her to hold her family together.
Knox needed to take accountability for his actions and he needed help to do that.
Ed, father of Knox was despicable in every way he handled the situation and his blatant disregard for anyone but himself.
Overall, the author was sensitive in the handling of this subject and brought an emotional book to her readers. Sadly, knowing that this may very well have happened today and will probably happen again tomorrow we can never help enough those that find themselves saying no.
Thank you to NetGalley and the publisher for giving me an ARC copy of this book in exchange for an honest review!
I would give it a 5 stars for how well the plot and the characters were written. Weaver is an amazing author! I am giving it 4-4.5 stars more for how the story played out and how it ended up.
I know everything isn’t going to tie up in a neat bow, because that’s not how life works, but I still was hoping for more. There was healing and there was heartbreak, but I still felt like a lot was left out at the end that could have been addressed. But at the end of the day, I get it, because unfortunately and horribly, rape victims often don’t get the justice they deserve. I still feel like it focused too much for my liking on a happy ending for Knox. I would have liked to see more of Summer than what we got.
The book had short chapters which I loved.
I loved all the POVs. Sometimes it gets too busy when there’s more than two, but I thought this book was the perfect use for more than that. I wasn’t bored at any point.
My favorite was Archie’s to be honest. He was such a sweet boy, and I felt for him so hard. I surprisingly really liked Jules. I wasn’t expecting that. I wish we saw more of her too.
We didn’t get his own POV but I loved Ari! I wish we could have seen more of him! I thought he was such a sweet kid, and it was great to see his and Jules’s relationship develop.
I did not need Knox’s POV though. I didn’t need to see how hard he had it. It didn’t make what he did any better, especially to someone he claimed to love. If it was just for background information I could handle it, but if it’s to make us sympathize or feel bad for him, it didn’t work for me. I am glad he realized his mistakes and felt guilty about it and tried to change, but that doesn’t change what he repeatedly did. Even at the end, everyone seemed to kind of forgive him and move on when it’s like wait a second, do we remember what happened? Even Lorrie, despite him being her son (I can’t imagine what it was like to hear your son did the horrible things he did), went along with protecting him. She thought a couple times about Summer, but only focused on not letting Knox get in trouble instead of punishing him for what he did.
I thought Eden was a very nuanced and complex character. I didn’t agree with a lot of her actions, but I understood where she was coming from. I loved that her and Witt had a loving relationship even if they fought. You don’t see that super often. She wasn’t perfect, and neither was Witt, but they worked to be good people and a good couple to each other. They cared for their daughter above all else.
Even though it didn’t ruin the book for me, one thing I wish happened was seeing a little more in the beggining of the dynamic of the two families. We were told not shown that Lorrie and Eden were best friends, so when they weren’t talking I wasn’t that sad. I liked Eden and Jules’ friendship way more!
Most of the adult men in this story were awful, but that’s to be expected.
This was a very human story, there were characters that were completely awful, ones that did bad things but were not evil, ones who were good, and people who made mistakes but did the best they could.
I highly recommend this! It’s difficult and sad to read for most of it, but the characters were what really made the story.
At times, I found this a hard book to read, not due to the writing, just mainly the subject matter -of Rape, of a woman’s right to say No, and the expectation that wishes her are heard and understood. Add to that Trial by Social Media that our society faces every day, the author really makes you feel uncomfortable about the way the world is going. And that’s a good thing in many respects, we shouldn’t just take it for granted that that is how life is now.
This story is told from the POVs of all the main characters, which at times felt a bit confusing, I did forget who was married to who and a couple of times, but it was very interesting to see all sides of the story. I couldn’t empathise with either Lorrie or Eden, but loved Archie, Violet and Tadpole. In all a thought provoking read that I would recommend , but I’m still trying to decide if I enjoyed it.
Thanks to NetGalley and the publishers for the opportunity to read and review this book
This was a story about 3 women and their families who move into a nice gated community. They all have secrets and complicated things they are struggling with, searching for a safe place to raise their kids. All 3 have teens become friends, just as the 3 women do. Throughout the story secrets will be revealed, relationships are tested and one teen will go missing. It was a good that that kept me interested.

Thank you to Netgalley and Storm publishing for providing me the ARC of Such a good family.
"I sat alone at the abandoned table surrounded by everyone's bald empty plates. I wondered if my family would ever go back to being normal."
"When had we decided Ed had the final say in our family?"
- Heart wrenching, compelling & thought provoking.
An unforgettable and emotionally charged story of two mothers - Lorrie and Eden whose lives are changed forever by a devastating accusation – and how far they’ll go to protect their family, even at the risk of tethering their years of friendship.
Told in multiple POVs, Such a good family is a perfect domestic drama and psychological thriller which will engulf you with it's simple and smooth writing style. Caitlin Weaver has done a great job crafting the story - tugging strings at poignant moments, as the narrative goes back & forth and told by different perspectives. I was hooked since the beginning and it left me pondering on how insubstantial humans become when their lives get threatened to be turned upside down.
As I delved further, I couldn't help but wonder - what I would have done instead of our complicated characters. There was a line in the later half - How much is forgivable when it comes to family? Which more or less encapsulates the essence of the plot and makes you question your own life in such a way that you step back and confront the Elephant in the room.
The only complaint I have is with the ending as I wanted a little better closure between the characters and see how they were navigating through everything maybe after a year or more. Nonetheless it's a harrowing story which will sit with you for ample of time but please only proceed after reading the content warnings as it deals with a heavy topic.
⚠️ CW: , Rape, Infidelity, Sexual assault.

I thought this book was a pretty good thriller. It was a fast read. It wasn’t my favorite book but it was not horrible. I would read more by Caitlin Weaver.
This book had me hooked start to finish. The author alternates different character's points of views to really deepen the layers. Two best friends and neighbors raised their children together. Their son and daughter find themselves in a difficult and startling situation. This leads the two main characters to question everything. I enjoyed this author's writing style and I can't wait to read more! 10/10!
