The Great Leap by Dan Hanly is a gripping and atmospheric YA thriller that blends survival with supernatural suspense. Fleta, a sixteen-year-old survivor of trauma, is banished to the harsh Wildlands Forest with three other teens after being wrongly accused of a crime. As they navigate their perilous journey, Fleta must confront her own painful past, while hiding dangerous abilities that could turn the tide in their struggle for survival. With compelling characters, intense emotional depth, and a menacing, mysterious threat lurking in the forest, this book delivers a page-turning story about resilience, friendship, and the quest for self-discovery. Fans of dark, supernatural adventures will find The Great Leap a captivating read.

Young teenagers are on the run and end up in the wilderness and they’re all arguing and fighting amongst themselves. All of them were damaged emotionally and they’re scared of the future. It’s a SciFi YA that does have some trigger warnings and some bad language but it stays PG for the most part if you’re wondering.
The entire story takes place basically with them already in the woods and I got to know each character here and their motivations. Each one will be challenged in different ways and I thought the author did a good job explaining the place. The end had some twists that were surprising and I feel like it will really take off with book 2.
Thanks Dan Hanly via NetGalley.

I’m sorry to say, this book just wasn’t for me. I made it about 15% into it before I just had to let it go. Some subject/verb agreement mistakes were prevalent, as well as just some plot into that didn’t make sense to me. Maybe it gets better, maybe not. But if I’m struggling 15% in, I need to lay it down. Thank you for the opportunity to read it early. Perhaps I will revisit another time.
