Really enjoyed this simple explanation of how we started using money, what banks are and payment methods. I know it’s designed for kids but actually is such a great overview with fun facts and history I really enjoyed it!
Complete guide to money-related questions for young readers.
I listened to this with interest (no pun intended). I'd have liked something along these lines when I was young - I had a savings account at the post office, liked looking at the blue book and seeing a yearly amount added, liked counting my coins up.
This would have been perfect, a look at a little of money's history as a bartering tool, what we use it for, the forms it takes, where to keep it, and more contemporary topics of PINs, cards, taxes and budgeting.
I think my two listeners (aged 13 and 7) would have got more from it if we had it on the page in front of us. Different topics speeding towards us every few minutes wasn't an easy listen, but that was because it felt like audio just wasn't the best format for the material.
Deborah Meaden has constructed a logical book, with interesting anecdotes about her own early money experiences, which will capture a young reader's interest. And while her name will also mean parents reach for this, I'm not sure she is a natural audiobook narrator, though again, non-fiction is not as easy to put appropriate tone into and make it sound compelling (I'd like to hear the narrator that could bring out the excitement of a page on tax!).
Great material, but choose the format right for your young learners.
For ages 7-11. With thanks to Netgalley for providing a sample audio copy.
Fantastic introduction to money for little ones; I even learnt a few things myself!
I appreciated that the author was the audio narrator as you don’t see that often. Deborah’s pace & tone was perfect to intrigue little ones.
Will be sharing this book with my kids & look forward to completing the challenges together to help kickstart this necessary life skill of managing money.
Thank you to NetGalley and Deborah Meaden for this ARC in exchange for my honest opinion.
A superb non-fiction audiobook for primary aged children (6 to 9 years) discussing in simple and concise language the importance of money from its historical origins to how we use it today. This should be mandatory teaching for all children, and indeed, it explains well ideas such as saving, compound interest, and government taxes that is useful for all ages! This is a lovely quick listen. It is lively and fun with challenges included to make it interactive. There are ten clear sections and a glossary of terms at the end to make it easily accessible. A must-listen for children. It is written and read by Deborah Meaden, an expert in this field and known for her role in Dragon's Den. #whymoneymatters #deborahmeaden #netgalley #farshoreaudio #harpercollins #audiobook
This is a great audio book to help kids understand money… it’s interesting without being preachy and has enough facts and challenges included to keep attention engaged. Definitely one to share with your little ones.
This children’s audio book is a great introduction to the purpose money, its development through history and how to take care of it, spend wisely and the importance of saving. Deborah Meaden makes a great narrator, easy to follow and speaking clearly. I enjoyed the fun facts in each chapter. A lovely book for sharing with children and a good length, helping them understand money better. Thank you to Net Galley for an audio arc in exchange for an honest review.
An engaging and informative audiobook about money. The narration is clear and positive. All concepts, words and terminology are explained, and followed by information about money, presented in a simple, foundations-laying way, and coupled with anecdotes about the author’s childhood. Perfect length and complexity, and the message is clear: save, stay informed, be independent.
This also marks my first audiobook by NetGalley. A great start, and I will listen to more audiobooks myself and with my child from now on thanks to this great start.
This is a lovely audiobook from everybody's favourite 'Dragon' Deborah Meaden! Deborah reveals he softer side in this fantastic introduction to all things money in an audiobook pitched for kids aged between 6 and 9.
I had the pleasure of listening to this book with a 6 and 9 years old, and were delighted that both fully engaged in this content from beginning to end!
The book is fairly short, but gives a history of how money came into being being before explaining how money currently works, and also encouraging our youngsters to think about their own responsible use of money!
I would absolutely recommend this audiobook and thank NetGalley, author and publisher for the opportunity to review this audiobook in exchange for an advance copy.
Why Money Matters explores the history of money as well as introducing key concepts relating to money such as saving, borrowing and spending. At the end of some of the sections, a challenge is set to get children to think about money and the concept introduced in that section.
I enjoyed Deborah Meaden's narration and found it very easy to understand as she spoke slowly and clearly. The information was presented in a logical manner and I thought that she did well at explaining complex concepts in a simple way that younger children would understand. This book was extremely concise and provides a solid overview of the world of money.
The main reason that I didn't rate this higher was because I felt that we spend far too longer going into the history of money which I didn't find very interesting. I wish this book had delved more into different ways of making money and the current banking system.
Overall this audiobook was enjoyable to listen to and a good overview of the world of money.
