Loner and Horror buff Charley is running from her past at Harrogate, an all girls boarding school on a remote island.
She's soon cast into her own Horror Movie when she and her roommate and best friend Olive discover the body of a student.
Charley and Olive are super fans of the genre and must use their knowledge to solve the mystery of who's the Harrogate killer before the body count adds up.
I loved this book, I felt the boarding school setting gave it Wednesday vibes, I loved the references to all the different Horror films and I loved the supernatural element of the ghostly classmates.
The only thing I feel was missing was I would have liked more stalking from the killer as it would have added more suspense and questioned Charley's sanity.
I can't wait to read more from this series.
Thanks Netgalley for the arc.
Fun, well paced teen slasher with muder mystery vibes and a school setting. Really enjoyable read. Highly recomnend for fans of lighter horror.
As its title suggests this is a fun little meta-slasher for fans of Scream. The added element of the victim’s ghosts aiding the investigation gives it a more originality than the average teen scream but it could do with a few more scares - YA audiences can handle more than you think!
This book is an engrossing read that masterfully combines practical survival advice with an in-depth exploration of the horror genre. It skillfully balances insightful tips on surviving terrifying scenarios with a humorous take on classic horror tropes.
The writing style is both informative and entertaining, making the book a delightful experience for horror fans. From the beginning, I was completely absorbed and couldn't put it down. The suspense of trying to figure out the killer's identity and motive kept me hooked, and the unpredictable reveal was a pleasant surprise.
I thoroughly enjoyed this book. The writing is exceptional, the characters are well-developed, and I particularly loved Charley's character. Her passion for horror films and her knowledge of how to handle scary situations added an extra layer of enjoyment to the story.
This is a really fun murder mystery, a perfect read for Halloween-time! It has a bit of a slow start but once it got going, I found it hard to put down. I really liked the unique idea of having the ghosts try to help with solving the mystery and feel like they added a lot to the story. Despite its sometimes grisly contents and tense, scary scenes, this book is also pretty funny. The ending is both unpredictable and satisfying and sets it up well for a sequel. I definitely recommend this as a quick, fun, mystery read and look forward to reading more by this author.

Trying to escape her previous life, Charley moves to Harrowgate, an all-girls boarding school situated on an isolated island in the Irish Sea.
When Charley and her roommate/best & only friend Olive find a body, its ruled as an accident. But Charley knows there's nothing accidental going on. She's seen all the horror movies and is sure that a serial killer is targeting the girls.
This story was so much fun.
As a horror movie lover, Charley knows exactly what not do to and what rules to follow. I loved that each chapter was named after one of these rules. And there were so many horror movie references. It’s these little details that are so entertaining.
I also loved the setting on the isolated, rainy and gloomy island. The vibes were *chefs kiss*.
What bothered me was the writing style and overall tone of the story, which at times felt more middle grade than YA. And there were a few things that felt quite repetitive.
All in all it was a solid 3.75 star book and I would read more by this author.
This is such a nicely paced and well-written YA book.
Charley and Olive need to solve some mysteries on an island.
As someone who is less keen on twists and mysteries, I was more invested in the characters (Charley’s an incredibly fun character), pop culture and horror references, and the mood of the story.
Craft 4.5
Setting 4.5
Plot 3
Characterisation 4
A quick, fun, sharp little read with heaps of horror references! Would recommend to fans of horror and of course, slashers, who enjoy a fun and silly time with their horror. This is a YA novel and reads as such. Heaps of fun.
Trying to escape her previous life, Charley moves to an isolated boarding school to start afresh - what could go wrong?!
Perfect for fans of 1980s/1990s horror movies.
A light hearted and fun read.
I really enjoyed this horror book and I anticipate it will be a great read during Halloween! The story is well plotted, paced and I enjoyed the element of the ghosts being present and able to communicate with Charley. It really gave me Scream vibes!
This is a spectacularly fun and silly YA novel about a teenage girl, Charley, who realises somebody's bumping off the other girls in her year at an isolated boarding school in the Irish Sea. Charley's horror film obsession means she's armed with a knowledge of all the tropes she has to watch out for, and she also teams up with the ghosts of those who have already died - but will she be able to figure out the mystery before the Halloween formal, when the plot will obviously come to a head? The first few chapters of How To Survive A Horror Movie struggle to find the right tongue-in-cheek tone - in particular, starting with a long description of the cool girls at school probably seemed like a good idea if you're thinking of the establishing shot of a teen movie, but doesn't work at all for a novel. However, once the ghosts appear, I found this consistently funny and engaging. I did miss the Fear Street/Scream vibes I was anticipating - despite the references to 'senior class' in the blurb, this is set in Ireland, and I wanted more of a US high school feel. Nevertheless, this definitely stands out from the crowd of YA horror novels by just having a very good time with its source material. And of course, there's a sequel.
Amazing book!
Super well written, quick paced, really unique characters and story, so many twists and turns and the ending!!!
I can’t wait to read book 2!
I was lucky enough for Little Tiger to send me a physical copy that I read in a day last week!
Oh my god! So many horror references, so many SCREAM references!! My favourite book of the year, hands down. I probably should have expected a sequel but I never. Roll on next year
This was such a captivating read that combines practical survival advice with a deep exploration of the horror genre. The book expertly navigates through the dos and don’ts of surviving terrifying scenarios with a mix of insightful tips and a humorous take on classic horror tropes.
The writing style is both informative and entertaining, making the book a delightful journey for horror fans. It was so engaging and I was hooked from the start, I couldn’t put it down. Trying to figure out who the killer was and what their motive is. I certainly wasn’t expecting the reveal! It’s absolutely unpredictable, which I LOVE.
I really really enjoyed this book, I loved the way it was written, I loved the characters, I loved that Charley was a horror film lover and knew exactly what to do in scary situations because of her love for horror films.
Thank you to Netgalley for providing me an E-ARC copy in exchange for an honest review.
I really enjoyed this book! It is reasonably short being under 300 pages and had good pacing throughout the book. I did enjoy the setting and felt it fit the story that was being told. I enjoyed the Horror / Slasher references and how they also applied during this book. I did guess part of the twist at the end of the book but it was still an exciting reveal. I would recommend this books and would read more by this author!
Very pleasantly surprised, I wasn't sure at first as it took a few chapters for me to really get in to but as I read on, I came to really appreciate the slow burn. Taking your time with pacing in the first few chapters is tricky, too slow and you'll lose readers, too much too soon and you ruin the suspense.
I have to say, Dunmore really kept me guessing the whole time, I had my suspicions but zero concrete evidence until right at the very end. Pleased to say it was a worthy and plot-threaded reveal rather than a total 'bait and switch' out of nowhere. I'm struggling to write this review without spoilers, but oooh boy am I glad there's already another book in the works. There are far too many unanswered questions to leave us hanging like this!
This was very fun, I love how it highlights the stereotypes of horror/slashers and the main character avoids playing into the stereotypes like the plague. The story does have it’s cliche’s with its character types like the mean girls, love interests and questionable adults (teachers in this case).
Charley is new at Harrowgate and its on an isolated island which means there’s no running from what is happening, Charley and her roommate Olive find a body and it’s ruled as an accident, but Charley ends up seeing the ghost later on and realises there’s nothing accidental about whats going on. Charley reluctantly becomes a detective with Olive’s assistance to find out whats happening and who’s involved.
There’s twists, secrets and betrayals that cut deep, if you love horror with fun final girl vibes then this is for you!
