I’m giving this three stars because I think it accomplished what it set out to accomplish? It’s deeply
Bonkers and I read it for the same reason I enjoy the Room. I am at my core trash. Should you read it? idk are you also trash? Then yes.
This was strange and I wasn't a fan of the present tense, but I will definitely read more of her shifter books. I would've liked more of a build-up, but it was a short story so it worked.
I received an ARC from NetGalley and I'm willingly leaving a review
Worth 3.5 → stepped up to 4 stars. This is part of a series but it doesn't say anywhere else than at the end of the book; also, the two previous books are under a series from another name and it's very confusing. The story itself is cute and easy to read. I'm not sure how old everyone is but Rachel seems really immature and Sig a bit too mature. He does everything in the house; what does she bring forth apart from being pregnant? (Of course she's prego, that's not a spoiler!). I really like the unique shifting capacities but I was looking forward to something really funny for Rachel and it's not even close. Looking forward to read Reaper's story.
Rubber Duckie Shifter Next Door is a funny story. Since it is a Novella the story move very quickly but the characters are interesting and makes you hope for everything to work out.
I honestly have no words for this book. The title is exactly what the book is about and yet I was surprised. This book jumped so quickly through the events that I barely had time to think about them. This book is weird and spicy but the spice was nothing like what I’ve read before. Two stars only because the main storyline is cute.
Everything was as expected. For a book like this, No notes from me.
It's gimmicky, phrases are overused, and it's got a whole lot of bath related imagery.
The comedy in this for romance readers is excellent. All the tropes are used in knowledge of their cheesiness and it's ridiculous and it's great.
Most people who pick up a title like this willingly will be satisfied with the results.
Truly the book equivalent of taking a dip in the pool. Fun, unserious, and a nice break from reading more heavy topics.
P.S. please give the spicy pepper man a book.
Rubber Duckie Shifter Next Door written by Mia Harlan was so cute and absolutely hilarious, but surprisingly it dealt with some sad topics that left a rock on my chest. Don't let the title scare you away, I laughed so much while reading this novella. The title and cover definitely had me fooled, but let me just say, I LOVED it so much. Mia Harlan definitely had me surprised with this quirky little novella. After loving this book, I'm definitely going to check out Mia's other works, she just has a way with words and making me laugh so much. I went into this novella blind, and I truly think that's what made me love it even more than I bargained for. I laughed way too much, I had tears streaming down my face. I have never read Mia Harlan before, but now she has my attention. The cover is so beautifully detailed and I'll admit it, that's why I grabbed this book, those beautiful covers always capture my attention. I can't recommend this novella enough, if you need something light and cute, then Rubber Duckie Shifter Next Door is the book for you. The topics weren't too heavy, but they were heavy enough to leave a rock on my chest. Please do yourself a favor and grab a copy of this novella May 17th, 2024. Mia, I love you, thank you for making me kick my feet in the air and giggle nonstop. You can literally read this novella less than under an hour and have the best time of your life.
THANK YOU TO NETAGLLEY AND MIA BOOKS FOR AN ARC OF THIS BOOK IN EXCHANGE FOR AN HONEST REVIEW!!!!!!!
Shapeshifter's- A man or woman with the ability to change their physical form.
"DUCK A DUCKITY DUCK".
When Rachel becomes the guardian for her best friend's three rebellious children, Rachel feels like she's drowning. These kids had the worst body odor, but they wouldn't take a shower because they wanted to rebel against Rachel because the kids felt like Rachel took their grandmother away from them, even though Rachel just paid for their grandmother to go on a cruise and take time for herself. Rachel is the godmother to her best friend Janey's three children, Lisa and Anna are fraternal twins, and Noah is their younger brother. Rachel has sworn off men and dating because she wants to be a responsible godmother to her best friend's children. My girl, Rachel, I love you so much, you did the best you can. When Rachel and the children are yelling over taking a shower, that's when their neighbor Sig jumps in. Don't even get me started on Sig, he's a blondie, with piercing blue eyes, and extremely muscular, totally drool worthy. Sig is a shape shifter, he has the ability to turn himself into a rubber duck. Sig also owns Rubber Duckie World, which is a water park with massive water slides, pools with bubbles, The Duckie Tub which is basically a pool with billions of rubber ducks. Sig made me laugh so much, he was so cute and he's definitely great with children.
Sig decides to take Rachel and the kids to his water park a day before the grand opening, and honestly it changed Rachel's life and she became closer with the kids which was such a heart warming moment. As Rachel and Sig spend more time together, Rachel learns about Sig's superpower and how he turns into a rubber duck. Rachel also learns during spicy time that as one of Sig's shifter powers, he doesn't need to breathe when he's underwater. As someone who loves fashion and clothes, there's one moment where I can't agree with Rachel, when Sig wears yellow board shorts, Rachel thinks it's the hottest thing ever. I don't have anything against board shorts or the color yellow, but it's just not my style, but yellow makes everything sunshiney and bright. As crazy as it sounds, I want to visit Rubber Duckie World and experience my inner childhood and have the best time of my life at this crazy and cool water park. Rachel and Sig were so cute and they both made me laugh so much. Sig basically helped bring these children closer to Rachel as she is their godmother and it just warmed my heart so much. I just wanted to reach into my kindle and give Rachel the biggest hug as she was drowning to become the best godmother and honor her best friend the best she can. I mean how freaking cool would it be to be a rubber duck shifter?
What a fun short story! Shifters of any type are always fun, but a RUBBER DUCK?! I wouldn’t have ever thought of something so silly, yet IT ACTUALLY WORKS!
Definitely a fun read! Thank you so much for the chance to read an ARC in exchange for an honest review!
Thank you to Netgalley and the author for allowing me to read this book.
The Rubber Duckie Shifter Next Door is a quick and sweet read. In my opinion this book is the perfect pallet cleanser. Some of the line's Sig said about ducks had me cackling. Honestly, are we sure Sig isn't Autistic? Ducks truly seem like his special interest, which is a mood.
I felt the information about the shifters were all crammed into one chapter. It felt rushed. I wish the information was spread out more. Given the current market for bizarre shifter romances I did expect more mature content scatter throughout the book. So I was a little disappointed to only have it in one chapter.
Overall, I think Rubber Duckie Shifter is still an extremely sweet read and worth checking out.
Cute enough, spicy and silly. Rachel takes on her deceased friends kids and is struggling. Enter Sig a ducky enthusiast and shifter. Lots of silly duck puns and references. Short and sweet.

Get me to Rubber Duckie world! A Rubber Duckie shifter and a hot mess of a new guardian to her friends rebellious kids. This was a fun read the tension through the book such a fun little read.
I like a shapeshifter and fated mates trope as much as the next girl does, but shapeshifting into a rubber duckie was… interesting. I might’ve gotten behind the rubber duckie shapeshifter trope if
1. The word “duckie” wasn’t mentioned so many ducking times per chapter.
2. If Sig -the dirty blond, blue eyed, polo wearing mmc- didn’t use a rubber ducky, aka a children’s toy, in a 🌶️ scene!
Is it just me or can we all agree that saying you love someone in the middle of 🌶️ is NOT romantic? Speaking of chilli peppers, Sig’s best friend is also a shapeshifter who turns into a chilli pepper. He doesn’t make it his entire personality like Sig does with his ducks so I’m okay with it.
Rachel - the blond fmc- is well described. She is left with three kids to take care of and she’s trying her best to make them like her. I wish I could’ve focussed more on her story but I was too busy distracted with the rubber duckie shifter.
There were good things about the story. The way Sig talks about Rachel is very cute and the way he helps her with the kids is admirable. The plot is not bad if you take away 70% of the times ducks were mentioned. I swear I’ve never read/said/written that word so many times in my entire life.
Additionally, the writing itself was good and the chemistry between the characters was strong. The story wrapped up nicely without any open endings.
I don’t think I would recommend this book but I’m glad I read it because the story was very creative and I got to experience something new.
This book wasn’t what I anticipated from the title - it was a better story then I had thought it would be. This isn’t just a spicy romance there is a genuine storyline - although brief, and real characters. There is still spice but it doesn’t dominate the book. An interesting and unique concept by the author.
This is a fun, spicy, shifter fated mate romance. Honestly I think this is better to go in blind as it makes the book a lot more enjoyable. The plot is enjoyable and I enjoyed the writing and I'm excited to read more from this author.
A rubber duckie shifter?! What?! Seriously had no idea what to expect going into this. The title is what got me. I’ve read a lot of shifter romance books but nothing like this. Nothing like an inanimate object shifter? This was a super short read. Very very cute. The two main characters are fated mates and have instalove. There is also found family. Rachel comes to help take care of her best friend’s children. They have been living with their nana. Nana’s next door neighbor Sig helps Rachel out. They fall in love. They want a big family and all to live together. Very cute. There was some good spice. I wish it was a bit longer but it’s a short story so obviously it’s not long. I thought the characters had very good chemistry but Rachel just accepted everything basically instantly. Anyways I’ll probably read Reaper’s book also. Because why not?!
Thank you NetGalley for an arc
Thank you NetGalley for this eARC.
This was super entertaining. It wasn’t what I was expecting , I thought it would be pure smut, but it was a good 70+% before there was any spice.
It had some really cheesy bits, some interesting choices, and some really sweet moments. Overall, it was a fun read.
I always enjoy sentient object romances with how creative they are, and this was no different! Mia sets up the premise really quickly, and I had fun the whole time. Short, sweet and ducking great for some chuckles.
I couldn’t believe my eyes when I saw the title. And then I was like….lets read it. And I’m so glad I did. This book is a light romance with steamy scenes and lots of fun. This little family was fun to read. I love how Sig helped Rachel and help calm her life. She only wants to help and she knows she needs Sigs good nature. Entertaining.
Thank you to NetGalley for a copy of this book.
This was a very quick read. It was just the palate cleanser I was looking for. There is a little spice, but not much. We are focusing on Rachel who is taking care of her best friend’s kids. The children won’t listen to her and the neighbor next door decides to help. He is a Shifter & the thing he shifts into is a rubber duck.
Of course he’s a great guy and helps her out with the kids and the kids love him.
It’s wholesome with a little spice at the end & an HEA. It’s probably just what you’re expecting if you find yourself interested and want to pick it up (so do it)!
Thank you to NetGalley and Mia Harlan for providing me with an ARC in exchange for an honest review.
