I feel very connected to Seal and Selchie stories and energy, so I was excited to read The Magic of the Seal by Melanie Godfrey. The book definitely did not disappoint. It is clear that the topic is close to the author's heart as well because she did such a thorough job covering the myths and stories.
I would recommend this book to anyone interested in learning more about these wonderful animals and the touching stories passed down through time about them.
Thank you to the publisher and NetGalley for the eARC of this book.
I wish I had better things to say about this book - after about 20% I just skimmed through the rest. I so wanted a book on this topic but I feel like there’s just not enough info for a full book. It felt like a lot of talking (writing) without any real takeaways for me. It felt like it lacked any real structure. It felt like when you’re writing an essay for school and you just kind of keep introducing new topics back to back with no real thought to it. I appreciate what the author set out to do, maybe it will be a better fit for others.
Indeed it is magical! A finely tuned mixture of scientific facts and historical mythology interlinked with the cultures who worship seals and pinnipeds as lost kin and mermaid like beings, his book is a must for any sea life enthusiast who loves myths and legends. Very fun and lyrically written. A quick and enthralling read with lots of information.
