I was so captivated throughout, and found the romantically bleak writing style so enigmatic. The suspense and mystery are maintained right until the very end, as is this pervasive sense of unease. I also found this book highly relatable and very heavy on the heart, having endured similar hardships, conversations and thoughts. Readers should be advised that there are heavy mental health themes running throughout this book. There is a deep exploration of existential philosophy which reads as a fever dream. I can imagine academics or philosophically oriented readers will enjoy this. I think this is a book that is going to get mixed reviews, and multiple interpretations, but its thought-provoking nature is something I appreciate. I have my theory but won’t spoil it for others. I only hope to read more by this author.
Trigger warnings for heavy themes of mental illness, depression, grief, animal cruelty, emotional manipulation, body horror, dysfunctional families, eating disorder.
