This is one of my favorite type of books: introducing niche information on a topic that is of wide interest, making it useable for a wide variety of ages. Not only will I buy a copy of this for my children at home, but I will also be buying a copy for my social studies classroom at the middle school level. The illustrations are adorable (dogs in boats), but also informative and really show how different boats look.

I think that there was a cute and unique idea here. However, I think that it went a bit off-track.
First of all, I think that a lot of the terms used for the letters would be super confusing to young kids learning their ABC's. There were a few definitions at the end of the book, but kids would still be confused by these definitions and some of the other words mentioned. Although, I appreciated the unique theme of this book; it was something different.
Second, and kind of related to my first point, I thought that the title didn't really make a whole lot of sense on its own. Does it relate to the story? Yes. However, I just think that it doesn't make much grammatical sense. It's especially important for the title to make grammatical sense due to the fact that this is a book for young readers that are still learning.
Third, I don't believe that most kids will find this book interesting. It's great that this book is unique, however I think that it just goes too far. Only kids that are super interested in boats will like this book, and other kids will not have a fun time reading.
Lastly, I actually really liked the illustrations. The dogs looked fairly realistic (but not overly so) and I loved seeing the wide range of dogs pictured. Kudos to the illustrator!

How could I not love to share a book about boats who are captained by dogs! A is for Airboat, I is for Icebreaker, N is for Narrowboat, S is for Schooner, V is for Viking Longship, W is for Windjammer, X is for Xebec, and Z is for Zodiac. And these are only my favorites! This is a book to enjoy again and again while finding new things to see each time!
The illustrations by renowned illustrator Astrid Shekels (also the author) are fun, intricate, brilliantly colorful, and have the very best dogs to captain these crafts.
Well suited for reading WITH someone of any age including ESL, and great for gifting to EVERYone, but especially to a school or your local public library! Loved it!
I requested and received a free temporary ebook copy on Adobe Digital Editions from Globe Pequot | Down East Books via NetGalley. Thank you!

I love alphabet books but they are not particularly popular in my school library. However, the popularity of both dogs and boats in my library may make me consider adding this to my collection.

The illustrations of this are stunning with dogs steering and captaining a variety of boats in a plethora of settings. It is also a great way to learn some new boat terminology.

Thank you to Globe Pequot and Net Galley for the eARC!

This might just be my new favorite alphabet book!! I love that this is such a unique picture book in that it's teaching the alphabet by also teaching children about boats BUT it's also teaching kids how to pronounce these sometimes complicated names of the boats. The dogs are adorable too and the illustrations are stunning. I would love to see this book in my library, I know many families who would love to read it together!

In this delightful alphabet book with a "Wind in the Willows" vibe, award-winning author and illustrator Astrid Sheckels introduces young readers to a, exciting world of sea dogs and boats. Children will discover various vessels from around the world, including air boats, rafts, coracles, and schooners. Sheckels’ artwork combines classic realism with whimsy, capturing the spirit of the sea and its canine companions. As kids explore the ABCs, they’ll also learn about different types of boats, fostering curiosity and love for the ocean. Whether you’re a young reader or reading with a little one, “Sea Dog Boats” is a delightful voyage through the alphabet seas!

Advanced book @netgalley kids book recap 📚✏️✂️📖🖌️🖍️

The Puzzle Piece by Andrea Mendoza (May 13) The most beautiful story in how to help children love themselves and be their most authentic self. I’m excited to read more of her books. Wonderful conversations to follow this with my kids!

Gathered at the Table by Glenn’s Nellist (Sept. 9) Using poems, it explains Jesus last supper and his time at the table. Such a profound, kid appropriate explanation of the communion.

Rosie’s Wild Ride by Paige Murray (Oct 7) Her completion doesn’t go quite as planned, but what if we keep going and ask “What if I can?” as we follow big dreams! I can’t wait to get this for my daughter. Loved the illustrations.

Night Magic by Leigh Ann Henson (Sept 23) This was SUCH a fun book of information. Why does it take so long for the eye to adjust to night? Lots of great information with this book and at a child’s level.

The Mountain and the Goat by Slamk Taghaddas (Sept 23) I loved the concept of teaching resourcefulness in this one. Loved the storyline.

Sea Dog Boats by Astrid Sheckels (Jan 14) To learn all about boats, let the dogs lead the way. All about the ABCs and nautical adventures this is a really cute story!

Twelve Days of Summer by Sherri Meret (July 1) “On the first day of summer…” The animals take you on a summer adventure as you sing along! My kids LOVED this adorable book.

Franklin’s Trees by AJ Skenkman (July 1) A story about young President Franklin. A history major myself, this was a really cute informative book.

Outdoor Skills for Kids by Buck Tilton (June 3) My son thought this book was the bees knees. He learned so much from it and kept talking about “when you approach an animal this is what to do..” He was so excited to share all he learned.

A Very Dinosaur Christmas by Adam Wallace (Sept 2) The giggles with this one! Dinosaurs at Christmas is silly.

Spooky Poems Aloud by Joseph Coelho

The Story of Dinosaurs by Catherine Barr

The Not So Wicked Witch by Bergen Steven’s

Pips Adventure by Ashling Lindsay

Paul the Peacock by Tilly Matthews

Happy Halloween Fiona by Zondervan

The Adventures of Cam E. Chameleon by Donna Herweck Rice

An incredibly unique alphabet book in its concept (boats, dogs - sea and coastal life) and descriptions for each letter in the alphabet.
The art style is also fresh, and with these qualities, this is a new addition and a fresh one at it to the alphabet book subgenre.
