WOW!! What a well written read. brilliant book, had me guessing and thinking with every page!! Bit flat towards end but a really gripping, Must check if the author has any more titles published!
Many thanx to the author, NetGalley and the publishers for allowing me to read and review this book
Thank you NetGalley and Joffe Books for an early copy of The Caregiver. Most of this book was not believable in what was happening but it kept my interest because the characters were a bit outrageous. There were two different plots going on and they did come together especially the last paragraph which was a perfect ending. It was also a very fast read. The kindest characters I’ve read in a book were the neighbor and house cleaner, nobody was nicer than those two.
Wow, what a read, I loved this fast paced psychological thriller! Set in suburbia, a loving daughter (Morgan) is struggling to look after her mum with dementia and her adorable twins!
Help comes in the form of Dana, apparently heaven sent, is she answer to all the families prayers?
It’s not long until life sours, and Dana’s true colours start to show!
Along with her husband Dan, Morgan is trying to sort what’s real and what’s not - there are so many twists and turns and as we all know secrets don’t stay hidden forever!
Thank you #Netgalley for the advanced copy!
Wow! Finished this in one sitting, could not put it down! And wow did it make me so angry in the beginning, I could not believe what Dana was doing to this family! I felt so bad for Morgan. This author really captured the emotions experienced by Morgan and her trying to protect her family while also keeping her husband happy. Loved the last page....karma....
I received an arc copy of this book from Net Galley in exchange for my honest opinion of it. Morgan hires someone she meets at the park to help take care of her mom who has dementia. Her husband, Will, is not thrilled with the hiring of a stranger to come live in their home with their set of twins. When Morgan's mom is found dead and they tell Dana that they no longer need her, she refuses to move out. Strange things begin to happen and secrets come out. I enjoyed this fast paced thriller although I felt like some of the things that happened were a little far fetched
Loved this book! By far the best psychological thriller I've read this year. Just when you think you know, you don't! I didn't want to put this one down and read it in less than 24 hours! Highly recommend!
Wow! What an exciting and suspenseful story! Once I started, I just couldn't put it down and finished this book in a single day. A story about having a squatter in your home sounds like many peoples worst nightmare because there's so little we can do to legally fight against it. Morgan's frustration and feeling of helplessness felt very real in this book. I loved the ending! Justice was served at last!
Thank you NetGalley, for the chance to enjoy this ARC.
I love Hinkens. She's one of my favorite authors. Unfortunately, this particular book wasn't up to her usual exceptional level of writing. I have read this same plot so many times already: the awful young girl scams a wealthy family and takes advantage by using landlord/tenant laws and sex appeal AMC their own secrets against them. It was tired. Cliche. Worse was there was nothing likable or relatable about the villain, and the married couple that was supposed to be the protagonists were indistinguishable. They didn't have their own personalities and they weren't likable.
Thank you to NetGalley, author Norma Hinkens and Joffe publishing for the ARC and the opportunity to review this book.
This was a jaw dropping page turner that I didn’t want to put down. It had me completely hooked right from the first page all the way to the last.
While certain sections were a bit predictable, there were many twists and turns that you won’t see coming.
I was initially skeptical given the vast amount of books about the ‘nanny’ thinking it would all just be the same but I was pleasantly surprised.
The storyline was well done and the character development was a lot on. It wasn’t over run with characters and each one was quite realistic.
It was a gripping book that will have your jaw dropping on more than one occasion.
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
This was one of the best thrillers I've read in a long time! I have a fascination with people who don't want to leave someone's home and this author nailed the twists and turns of the psychological trope. Something like this could (and probably did) happen in real life which makes the book that much more creepy.
"𝑰 𝒕𝒉𝒊𝒏𝒌 𝒔𝒉𝒆 𝒘𝒂𝒏𝒕𝒔 𝒎𝒐𝒓𝒆 𝒕𝒉𝒂𝒏 𝒂 𝒑𝒍𝒂𝒄𝒆 𝒕𝒐 𝒍𝒊𝒗𝒆--𝑰'𝒎 𝒂𝒇𝒓𝒂𝒊𝒅 𝒔𝒉𝒆 𝒘𝒂𝒏𝒕𝒔 𝒎𝒚 𝒇𝒂𝒎𝒊𝒍𝒚."
I am obsessed with books about people who won't leave your home because it's one of my worst irrational fears.
Will, Morgan, and their twins are a typical suburban family. Will is consumed by his work and is stiff and formal, even stand-offish, while Morgan is caring for her elderly mother who is suffering from dementia. She's overwhelmed and in need of support, so when her mother wanders off and briefly goes missing, she knows that she needs help. She finds it in Dana, the sister of a neighbor who has been helping out with their kids but is no longer needed.
At first, everything is great. But when a change in circumstances means that Dana is no longer needed, Morgan expects her to pack up the guest studio and go.
But she doesn't.
The two women are at a stand-off, the police get involved, and Will, who never wanted Dana there in the first place, is strangely reluctant to put his foot down. There are a few chapters from Will's POV in which the reader gleans some eye-opening information!
There was a secondary plot line that felt totally out of place, but it didn't deter from my enjoyment of the book.
Thank you to NetGalley and Joffe Books for this early read. This title will publish June 27, 2024.
I haven’t read much from this author before so didn’t know what to expect but wow this was such a captivating thriller. It was one of those book where you want to shake the main character. I loved the writing style and how well developed the characters were written. I really wasn’t expecting the ending it was jaw dropping. Overall fantastic gripping thriller which I will be recommending to everyone. Thanks to netgalley and the publisher for the opportunity to read this great thriller.
The Caregiver is a fast paced psychological thriller that is a rollercoaster of suspense. It had shocking twists with a labyrinth of hidden identities that kept me on the edge of my seat. This is a must read for anyone who enjoys a murderous thrilling ride, where the past is unsurfaced and many unexpected turns. The killer ending is what sets this book apart from others with a satisfying epilogue that will leave readers happy with the final sentence.
3.5 stars rounded down. The Caregiver by N.L. Hinkins is a psychological thriller. The writing is well done as are some of the characters.
Will and Morgan have 4 year old twins. Also, Morgan cares for her mother, who has dementia. Will is way a lot of business and Morgan really could use a hand. When Morgan's mother walks out of the house and is presumed missing, Morgan begins to look for assistance. She meets Dana in the park and feels Dana is perfect for the job. They let her live in a studio in the backyard and help with the kids and the mom. Even with the extra help, Morgan is constantly at wits end by all her responsibilities. And it only gets worse. So I kind of liked Morgan. She was trying to hold it all together with the kids and their activities, on top of being a good daughter and wife. Will is very standoffish and I found him extremely unlikable. Throw in an extraneous character and the book became kind of outlandish for me. I had to really think out of the box on how all this was happening.
I do like this author and will continue to read her books. I really didn't care for this one though. It is a good quick read so I do recommend it. Thank you to Netgalley and Joffe Books for the ARC. I greatly appreciate it. I do recommend this book.
I really enjoy books by this author. I was excited to see one on netgalley! Her books are always full of suspense and hooks you don't see coming. Morgan gives Dana a job taking care of her mother, which includes a place to live. First of all, it never ends well for anyone when you allow a stranger into your house. The author could have cut out some of the middle, but the ending was amazing! You will never guess what Dana is really up to. It also felt like perhaps too much was going on at times, but I love her books and will always rec them!
This was an interesting read and it held my attention to the very end.
Thank you for the opportunity to review
Thanks netgalley for an early copy of this book.
How does an 81 year old woman who never leaves the house manage to go missing, it’s impossible.
When she was found wondering the streets Megan knew she needed help with her mother who had dementia,
Megan had twin children and a husband who travelled a lot on business.
Going to the park with the children to play in the playground, a woman called Dana started taking to her and after Megan told her her worries Dana offered to be her carer for food and lodgings.
Little did I know that Dana was not going to leave and my worse nightmare got even worse.
This book was ok but iverlong, and lost the plot in the middle.
Oh. My. God.
I LITERALLY couldn’t put it down. I had to stay up till 1am to finish it!
Great writing, loveable characters, affective storyline. What’s not to love?!
Off I go to search for any and all books by this author.
Morgan and her husband’s lives are turned upside down when the carer they hired for Morgan’s sick mother turns into the tenant from hell. As the plot thickens, who is the bad guy? And how will it all end??
I’m not ashamed to admit that the epilogue had me LAUGHING with karmic excitement!
Thank you NetGalley and Joffe Books for the ARC of this book. I found that it started in a similar way to several recently read books, but I was wrong. The premise changed very quickly and the more I read the more intense the story became. Was the husband a co-constitutor or was
he guilty of something from his past. Was the caregiver bent on seduction or revenge?? I kept guessing but I couldn't figure it out. The end was a surprise, and the story was well written. I enjoyed the book and would recommend it.
How does an 81-year-old woman, who hasn’t left her bedroom — let alone the house — without assistance in months, simply vanish into thin air? I’m trying not to freak out at the thought of my mother wandering the neighborhood, lost in a maze of confusion.
We found her — but that was the moment I knew I needed help. I’m at breaking point. I’m a stay-at-home mom. I love my four-year-old twins deeply — but they’re a handful. My husband’s always away on business. My mother’s in the early stages of dementia. It’s a lot. So I let Dana into my home. She’s the answer to my prayers. She’ll be my mother’s live-in caregiver. Soon there are red flags. I catch Dana gazing at my husband when she thinks I’m not looking. She tells my daughter she’s ‘part of the family now’. My son Sam is becoming silent and withdrawn.
ARGH. Have you ever read a baddie that was so well-written that you absolutely hate them? This is that. Brilliant writing, fast paced page turner from the very beginning to the last page. Characters, plot, things you never see coming. Highly recommend this one!
Thanks to Netgalley and the publisher for the advanced digital reader's copy (ARC) in exchange for an honest review!
