This book started of well, but nothing seemed to be happening the further in I read and I found it quite difficult to get into.
I did enjoy this book, it was filled with twists and turns and was an interesting developing plot. I just found the characters really unlikable
This was an interesting psychological thriller!
I was rather annoyed with it at first because the characters were unlikeable.
The FMC was so frustrating to me because I felt like she was putting all the wrong things in front of getting her daughter back. It also seemed like it was a horror story rather than a psychological thriller. I felt like there was so much going on, and I couldn't make sense of it.
The ending definitely changed things for me. I loved how everything fell into place!
I also liked how the FMC's memories helped to tell the story.
This was definitely a good book to start the spooky season!
This was a fabulous read, kept me glued all the way through. A new author for me and I will be looking for more by her. Highly recommend. My thanks to Netgalley and the publishers for giving me the opportunity to read this book in return for an honest review.
Having previously read The Call of Cassandra Rose by this author I knew I was going to love this one too. It has unlikeable characters, the plot was great and it kept coming at me with twists and turns. Loved it just as much as her Cassandra.
One thing I absolutely LOVED about this book is got it gets you into the mind of the main character. I really feel like I was experiencing the storyline through her eyes. There was also a lot of poetic verbiage in this book, but without it being over the top or pretentious, which I think is really hard to do. It was written really well. Not, the ending… holy cow! On the one hand, I kind of had my suspicions all along but there were so many twists at the end of the book and there were more surprises at the end of the book than just who the antagonist was. I really appreciate books that make you unsure of if you’re reading a horror story, psychological thriller, or a crime drama, and that really checked this box for me. By the end of the book, you have no idea if someone is taunting the main character or if she is insane, and I thought I had that figured out at least 6 different times in the last 30 pages of the book. Overall, a great book and it was super plot twisty and immersive!
This was a good book, I really enjoyed it. The main character Eve left home at an early age after her mom left her family. Over the years she has tried to find her mom and has avoided going back home since she left. She goes back and feels like the house is talking to her and feels like it’s trying to tell her something. She has flashbacks of the night her mom left but can’t piece it all together.
Quite suspenseful, a harassment of an already troubled alcoholic with a past that she doesn’t fully remember. I kind of figured out the harasser about half way through, and I gpfelt sad that she wasn’t getting herself together. A bit of a creepy read.
An interesting book. Took me a while to get into it. A woman returns to her old family home with a lot of issues regarding her parents. She meets a friend Nic from long ago who still lives in the flat next door and reconnect but Nic isn’t all that she seems.
Another one I forgot to review last month! This was such a good read. It's set over dual timelines and the characters are vividly brought to life. There are some amazing twists and it's completely unlike any other thriller I've come across. The characters are also all relevant and there aren't a million people introduced for no apparent reason. The writing style flows easily so it was hard to put it down until that final big reveal
The family home by Sophia spiers.
This was a good read. It was slow to begin with. I wasn't sure how I felt about the characters. I certainly didn't have any favourites. Although Nic I really did not like at all. Twisty. I certainly didn't see that coming. I did like the end. 4*.
THE FAMILY HOME was exactly what I needing. A gripping true psychological thriller that kept me guessing and turning the pages. I loved the dual timelines, There was a great build up to what Eve went through as a child, as well as what in the world was going on with that house. It was downright creepy! This book is for all thriller lovers!
Thank you to Netgalley and the publisher for this ARC!
I had so many thoughts throughout this story and i will say this one surprised me so much with its twist. This is a must read for any murder mystery / psychological thriller lover it will keep you on your toes as you read through it. This is about a woman who is rock bottom, drunk, lost her daughter, and was left with her childhood house. This house is the last place she saw her Mom and where her Father hung himself and she has always blamed herself for his death because she ran away and left him alone. We start with her going through getting back into the house and meeting neighbors as well as her old best friend from childhood. The days go fast and the nights get creepy as she starts to hear things and is woken up every night at the same time, this leads her back to drinking so everything is very hazy. I don’t want to spoil the story for anyone but please do give it a read.
After 30 years, Eve returns to her bequeathed family home. Eve is a bit of a troubled soul. She is a former alcoholic and her ex has the main custody of her daughter. Eve is hopeful that returning to her family home will be a fresh start and show her ex that she is capable of caring for their daughter.
As soon as Eve steps into the house, the memories come racing back. When Eve was a teenager, her mother left. Shortly thereafter, her father passed. As Eve is surrounded by the once familiar house, she begins to question what really happened to her mother. She also reunited with her former bestie, Nic. Eve is sure that something else went on all these years ago, and is determined to uncover every last secret.
I loved the setting for this thriller - you can never go wrong with a. creepy abandoned home. As the story progressed, I had many questions and did not know who to trust. I enjoyed the build up. The flashbacks to Eve's past also really helped to set the stage and keep the suspense level high. I always love books with complex family secrets. This one did not disappoint.
I did not really like the prologue, but that's ok, as the rest of the book was pretty good.
Thank you Joffe Books | Lume Books and NetGalley for the advanced copy in exchange for an honest review.
I’d give this book 3.5 stars. It’s a slow start and I disliked the main character a lot. I couldn’t connect with her because she was such a disaster. None of the characters were very likable. I did enjoy the ending and sinister, creepy vibe of the book. The main character slowly going insane was written amazingly and was very believable. Overall a good book but just not for me.
Happy Pub Day!
The Family Home, released today and I can not wait for thriller lovers all around to get this book in their paws! Sophia Spiers, has hit the ground running and if I had to make a prediction, she can not be stopped.
Secrets, deceit and oozing with suspense, I can not rave any more about this book!
Shamefully, this was my first book by Spiers, but after loving up on this one so much I instantly went to check out her back log, I can not wait to read her debut, The Call of Cassandra Rose.
Check out this teaser :
A family home should be where you feel safe. Mine was where my family was destroyed.
Thirty years ago, when we lived there, my mother left and never came back.A year later, at Halloween, my father took his own life.
Now I’m back. I inherited our family home, a crumbling four-bed, Victorian house.
It’s the last place I want to be, but it’s also my last chance to put my life back together. My ex ran off with another woman. And my daughter isn’t speaking to me.
I want to reconnect with my daughter and give her the family home she deserves.
But then I find the jade necklace. Behind a skirting board in the kitchen. The one that matched my mother’s eyes and she never took off . . . And a letter.
Going home could be the worst move I ever made.
Rounding up from 2.5 stars
This psychological thriller was a slow burn. Unfortunately the prologue gives away what could have been a nice twist. The rest of the book drags on and is written from the point of view of a neurotic alcoholic. A lot of the books is her thoughts on whether she should have a drink or not. Since the book is basically about her, and I felt annoyed by her character, I overall felt annoyed by the book. There simply wasn't enough plot to balance this out. There was another twist towards the end but I felt it was anticlimactic. Overall this book just fell flat for me.
Thank you to NetGalley and Joffe Books. I received an advance review copy for free, and I am leaving this review voluntarily.
I was hooked by first page and could not put it down!
Excellent psychological thriller that kept you guessing till the very end! It was atmospheric, bit dark, full of ups and downs and struggle of the main character. Absolutely loved the book!
I was immediately hooked and needed to know what happened and what was the truth with this book!
A new thriller writer to add to my library along with Freida McFadden and Helen Fields.
What a great read. I was hooked to this book. Couldn't put it down. A new author for me will look out for future books
Definitely recommend to others
