When I picked up this book I didn't realize it was a series, my fault, so I went back and bought one and two and absolutely loved them. This series is a solid police procedural. Kat is a really likable as a character. If you haven't read the first two book before reading this one please consider doing so, book two ends in a cliffhanger and it makes the beginning of this book so much better.

Another really strong addition to the Kat Ballantyne series, I've loved them all! The stories are complex while still being believable and the characters are really likeable. As it's the third book in, by this point you've definitely built up a connection with Kat and Tomski and are wanting to know what's happened.

I can't wait for book four!

The third in the Detective Kat Ballentyne books and, having read other novels by this author, I bought the first two in the series to catch up.
An excellent installment as we have come to expect from Mr Maslen.
Great characters, well thought out plot and the pacing is just right.
I'm already on the look out for the next one.
Many thanks.

I am new to @andy.maslen and the Kat Ballantyne but I loved it so much that I am putting the previous books at the top of my TBR. This is a wonderfully written slow-burn thriller that will grab you and not let you go til the very last page. I couldn't read this book fast enough because every twist was perfectly plotted to keep you guessing. I don't want to say too much so I avoid spoiling this fantastic thriller it is a 2024 must read

Book three in the series and another suspenseful read! While this one was not my favorite, it was a very suspenseful read and I enjoyed my time with it. I think it could work as a standalone however, there is a lot of backstory that this one follows up on so I think it would be better suited to read in order. I found the case to be fun to follow and I enjoyed my time with it! Hoping there’s more to come in this series. 3.5 stars.

Andy Maslen gets it right again! This is an excellent read, despite a few slow patches here and there in the early stages. Other than that, this story kept me engrossed to the end and wanting to know more! Kat is not a “superhero” in the Reacher mould, but someone you can see turning up at the station for her day job. There are a few seeds sown for the next books in the loose ends, but the accelerating pace races on and keeps you gripped. It’s not obvious where the storyline is going – which is great – but did require me to suspend disbelief once or twice. That said – another great read from Maslen and I’ll be waiting eagerly for the next release.

Third in the Kat Ballantyne saga, and one of many of Andy's creations. The best of the three, and i would onlysay that in light of the commission of three more from Amazon, it will only get better.
Without saying too much or for fear of spoilers, there are two characters in the story that in my opinion need to get their comeuppance, and unfortunately we are goung to have to wait till at least volume 4.
This tale will get stronger with more additions, not unlike other stories from Andy Maslen.
Both my partner and myself said Fantastic on the turn of the last page of this current story.

DS Kat Ballantyne receives a call from a friend she plays netball with admitting to the murder of a local criminals wife. Kat is sure she didn't commit the crime and wants to investgate further but is under pressure to close the case as they have a person in custody wh has admitted to the crime.
At the same time Kat is under investigation from the police anti-corruption unit as £50,000 had been deposited into her bank account from a Swiss account and unless she discovers who it is from her career could be over.

Another really enjoyable novel from Andy Maslen. An excellent author who fleshes out his characters and brings the stories to life.I enjoy all the books of his I read.

DS Kat Ballantyne is being investigated by Anti Corruption Unit £50,000 had mysteriously appeared in her bank account from a Swiss bank account. Where had it came from, who had that kind of money to frame her, who hated her that much? The only person she can think of who had that kind of money is her father but he swears it’s not him and she believes him. In the meantime while this process is being investigated Kat is confined to desk duties looking through cold cases, however Kat is determined to clear her name.
While on desk duties she gets a phone call from a friend on her netball team Laura Paxton who tells her she has murdered Alanna Michie one of her friends, she said Alanna was having an affair with her husband Will who is a DC in another department in police. Kat thinks it’s a personal call she doesn’t know if it’s true so she best go check on her friend make sure she’s ok. When she got to Alannas house she did indeed find Alanna dead Laura’s DNA is all over the evidence. Laura straight away admitted she murdered Alanna. Kat called it in.
Something about the whole situation didn’t sit right with Kat. She had a feeling Laura was covering for someone maybe being pressured she couldn’t let an innocent woman go down for a crime she didn’t commit. Especially when it was the wife of a mafia boss she has admitted to murdering.
From first page this book had me gripped I love All Andy’s books every series just gets better, I remember when he emailed asking what we thought about a female lead detective I have no idea why he had doubts but we got Stella Cole who was a whirlwind, brilliant character now we have Kat Ballantyne she is also amazing but so different from Stella and Gabriel. Andy is an exceptional author. I’d read anything he wrote because I’d know I was in for a treat. Definitely 🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟

Andy Maslen writes in a way that has be gripped, the slow feeding of hints that I could not help feeling were forshadowing is consistent. As book 3 in the series and a stand alone read, this series has 5 stars and The Silent Wife doesn’t fail on any level to be a 5 star. Where some series dip and fall, Andy Maslen is producing a 5 star series that is brilliant. I read this book in one sitting, and I could not put it down. An author who can consistently offer us 5 star reads that are thrilling and exciting along with a wonderful array of humour! I laugh out loud in the middle of a thriller book and it’s hilarious. I do hope this series will continue. Kat is a brilliant character she is a strong and confident police woman with all the daily issues of life, with a teenage soon and insecure about her husband she is lovable and I am intriguing to see where she goes! With characters like “carve up” the book and series is unputdownable and a must read for fans of thriller!

After enjoying the first in this series, and absolutely hating the second, I was not sure what to think of the third.

We jump right in right after the end of the second book. Kat has received a 50k pound deposit of money into her bank account and is being accused of accepting a bribe unless she can find out where the money came from and clear her name. Meanwhile, she receives a phone call from a friend stating she has just murdered a woman and to come arrest her. At the scene, covered in her DNA, there’s no denying her friend Laura committed the crime, but things begin to not add up and Kat begins to question everything, while her boss wants this murder sealed with its little bow on it. Will Kat be able to find the real killer, if it isn’t her friend, and will she be able to find the source of the money before the corruption charges come down on her?

I’m happy to say I enjoyed this one much more than the second. The main crime was interesting, why would someone confess to a murder if they didn’t do it, and who indeed did commit the crime instead? The back story of the money and the family drama is a lot to take in, and a little above board of believability, but it’s a story line nonetheless that I’m sure a lot of people enjoy.

I suppose this redemption is well deserved, and I will keep my eyes open for the next instalment.

Kat Ballantyne returns in her third thrilling adventure. When a friend calls Kat to confess a murder, Kat is skeptical. Despite being sidelined to a desk job amidst her own investigation, she dives into the case. Andy Maslen delivers an exceptional thriller filled with unexpected turns, arguably his finest to date. "The Silent Wife" stands strong as a standalone novel, yet it enriches the tapestry of the series with its character development and intricate backstories. The narrative masterfully intertwines murder and corruption, presenting a labyrinth of twists that ensnare the reader's attention. With the narrative path clear for a sequel, anticipation builds for what promises to be another captivating installment in the series.

Kat Ballantyne is back for her third outing. A friend calls Kat and confesses to murder, but she doesn't believe her friend she investigates even though she's been put behind a desk while she's being investigated herself. Plenty of twists in this excellent thriller, probably the best yet. Andy Maslen doesn't disappoint. Thanks to Thomas & Mercer for this review ARC

Third book in the series and best one yet. Kat has to deal with personal trouble as well as trying to solve a case she has been removed from. Sounded like an open and shut case - person confessed. Things just didn’t seem so clear. Great read

An excellent, fast, well paced mystery. I welcomed the change this time from the serial killer thriller to murder mystery for Kat, providing more distinction from Maslen's Stella Cole books. Eager to read the next in the series!

The Silent Wife by Andy Maslen is a very intriguing crime thriller mystery.
Maslen has masterfully weaved together a story that keeps the reader engaged from start to finish, with a well-paced plot that flows seamlessly.
Another enthralling and thrilling read. I was captivated from start to finish and loved it.

This, the third Kat Ballantine novel is in my opinion, the best one yet. A pacey and twisty page turner, totally engrossing, everything you would expect from the excellent Andy Maslen.

Technically, a police procedural, it is interwoven with Kat’s continuing troubles, with friends, family, her superior officer and the anti-corruption squad.

All in all an excellent read. Highly recommended.

I loved the first and second DS Kat Ballantyne books, The Seventh Girl and The Unseen Sister! If you did too, you won’t want to miss this gripping third installment. In this book, Kat is trying to solve an unusual murder while simultaneously trying to clear herself of bogus corruption charges after £50,000 mysteriously appears in her bank account. Kat knows she’s innocent and she’s sure the murder suspect is too, despite the confession and all the crime scene evidence to the contrary… she just has to prove it.

You can read The Silent Wife as a standalone, but the characters and their backstories weave throughout the series, so I recommend reading this excellent series from the beginning. Kat in particular is such a compelling character – she’s a dedicated and tenacious detective, but also emotionally vulnerable and slightly morally grey, shrugging off rules and directives when they don’t suit her drive to investigate murders. The murder and corruption subplots are deftly woven together, with plenty of twists that kept me guessing. The door is wide open for a fourth book, and I already can’t wait to read more!

Fans of Isabella Maldonado or Tami Hoag (one of my all-time favorite serial killer/police procedural authors) will definitely enjoy The Silent Wife and this series as a whole! Many thanks to NetGalley and Thomas & Mercer for providing me an advance copy of this book.

The Silent Wife by Andy Maslen is book 3 in the Detective Kat Ballantyne police series and is another excellent read in this crime series.
In this episode Kat Ballantyne is facing corruption charges which if proven would be the end of her police career.
There is also her netball playing friend, who has told Kat that she is guilty of the murder of her friend who was also a career criminals wife. Whilst she is being held for Alanna’s murder there are details that don’t reconcile to her being the killer.
It is an interesting read, particularly when her father and her corrupt immediate boss combine resources to end Kat’s career and even possibly her life.
Highly recommended
