This novel is a light and short read. I appreciate anything under 300 pages. Know that if you read it it’s written in first person present stream of consciousness.

Book Review: We Were on a Break

I recently had the pleasure of reading We Were on a Break by Jo Lovett, and it truly swept me off my feet! The story begins with Callum, who finds himself stranded in Rome due to a volcanic ash cloud. His desperate bid to return to London takes a surprising turn when he accepts a lift from none other than Emma, his ex-girlfriend. The tension and awkwardness between them right from the start had me hooked.

As they journey through Italy and France in a campervan, I couldn’t help but feel the electric chemistry that lingered beneath their bickering. Emma’s reluctance to face her past with Callum, and his desperate attempts to navigate their complicated history, made for a compelling read. I found myself rooting for them, hoping they could overcome their past and rediscover the love that once brought them together.

Lovett's writing is witty and charming, capturing the breathtaking scenery of their road trip beautifully while weaving in moments of humor and heartfelt emotion. The forced proximity trope worked wonders here, allowing both characters to confront their unresolved feelings. Each revelation about their past added depth to their journey, making me both laugh and tear up at various points.

What struck me most was how relatable their struggles were—whether it’s grappling with heartbreak, figuring out what you truly want in life, or simply dealing with the complexities of love. The mix of humor and poignant moments kept me engaged throughout, and I devoured the book in just a couple of sittings.

We Were on a Break is the perfect summer romance, filled with warmth, laughter, and the promise of second chances. If you enjoy feel-good stories that explore the intricacies of love against stunning backdrops, this book is an absolute must-read! I can’t recommend it enough.

I think im finally done with brit lit. its just so slow for me the romance doesn't hit right and I don't find myself ever wanting to pick the book back up. this was a total dnf.

This book is a short and sweet closed-door romance that charmed me with its quirky characters. Emma, with her delightful eccentricities, and Callum, who has the best intentions despite sometimes coming off as confusing, share undeniable chemistry and tension. Their transition into a friends-with-benefits/holiday fling dynamic is both endearing and exasperating. Emma's hopeful optimism for more, despite Callum’s somewhat clear but mixed signals, had me cringing at times.

What didn’t quite work for me was the reasoning behind the end of their relationship and the obstacles to rekindling it. The resolution, which comes through a sudden realization by one of the characters, felt a bit too convenient. Emma’s repeated quest for "closure" became somewhat repetitive, though I could empathize with her confusion, as I found myself feeling similarly puzzled.

Jo Lovett’s writing is a standout, filled with humor and laugh-out-loud moments—Emma’s driving adventures and her beloved van, Miranda, are particularly memorable. The emotional depth in the story is also well-executed, bringing a few tears to my eyes. As a fan of second-chance romances and a touch of angst, this book offered plenty to enjoy.

I really enjoyed reading this book. I absolutely loved the writing and found it so easy to read and keep up with the main characters story and their backgrounds. I absolutely loved the dual perspectives of some scenes as they provided another layer to them, meaning they just made me smile more or tugged on my heartstrings more. Would definitely recommend

This book was a wonderful read and such a lovely, heartfelt, feel-good romance that was so heartwarming it left me feeling all the warm and fuzzy feelings!

It was such an easy book to read and i found myself whizzing through the pages until i had, very quickly come to the end.

We Were On A Break was very lighthearted and very funny too and i found myself chuckling along in quite a few places!

I loved both of the main characters, Callum and Emma and thoroughly enjoyed getting to know them and seeing their story unfold. The banter between the pair was absolutely top notch!!

This was the most perfect second chance romance, with the perfect happy ever after too!!

A second-chance contemporary romance sprinkled with humour, pathos and laughter, We Were on a Break is the uplifting new novel by Jo Lovett.

Callum is desperate to get back to London, but with volcanic ash grounding all the planes in Italy, it looks like he’s going to be stuck in Rome for the foreseeable future. Until fate intervenes and he manages to find a lift back home with a friend of a friend who is also heading back after a European road trip in a caravan. Only, it turns out that the friend of a friend is not a complete stranger but somebody he once knew very well – his ex girlfriend, Emma!

Awkward does not begin to describe how the two of them feel the second they clap eyes on one another and realise that they are going to be stuck in very close proximity together for days on end! Emma is naturally not exactly over the moon to find herself back in the company of the man who had broken her heart into a million tiny pieces again. It’s taken her years to heal from the acrimonious end of their relationship, so being in Callum’s company is the last place in the world she wants to be. However, could fate have had a hand in bringing them together in the most unlikely of ways?

Is time truly a great healer? Can Emma and Callum draw a line under the past once and for all and look to the future together? Or should the two of them simply let sleeping dogs lie?

Jo Lovett’s escapist romantic comedy will steal your heart. We Were on a Break is a witty, warm-hearted and emotional tale about facing up to the past, starting over and love lost and found that will make you laugh out loud and have you shedding a tear or two. Emma and Callum’s love story had me on tenterhooks as I found myself completely invested and involved in their journey to their happy ever after.

An enjoyable contemporary romance perfect for Tessa Bailey fans, Jo Lovett’s We Were on a Break is a sparkling and feel-good read that will brighten up your day.

What a perfect name for a book. Very nostalgic, but also very accurate. I loved this book! Traveling drama is my favorite drama.

Got to love exes who are thrown back together. I liked the familiar favorite romance tropes and this story set in such a beautiful place.

In this chaotic and entertaining modern romance novel, volcanic ash has grounded flights out of Italy and Callum needs to get back to London. A friend of a friend, Emma, is roadtripping around Europe and could give him a ride to London from Rome. However, Callum and Emma dated a long time ago and are now stuck in her tiny tired van at a leisurely pace across Italy and France. Neither of them want to be stuck in this car, especially since their break up went so poorly, but something seems to be meddling in their reunion that forces them to come to terms with the past so they can move on with their futures. Callum and Emma are quirky, unique, and relatable people with complex personalities and backstories, and these quirks add something charming and whimsical to this novel. The various romantic tropes which befall Callum and Emma are well-chosen and brilliant, adding to the tension between the characters over the course of the novel. Charming, chaotic, enjoyable, and romantic, Callum and Emma’s road trip is a fascinating trip to follow, and fans of Lovett’s books (and other titles from the genre), will definitely enjoy this romantic European adventure.

We Were on a Break was a charming book that I enjoyed reading. It was a bit slow to start but I ended up smiling and really enjoying the story as it progressed. I don't always love a forced proximity trope, but Jo did a great job with this and its characters. Cute book to cozy up with!

A genuinely lovely, heartwarming read. Wonderful characters who are well written with a strong backstory - this is the perfect lighthearted read, whether for a holiday or snuggling down with on the sofa.

I am a big fan of Ms. Lovett’s books.First love, second chance, forced proximity stories are some of my favorite reads. Callum and Emma’s story fell a little flat. There were definitely some fun adventures traveling with a faulty van and meeting some unique people along the way. I just didn’t understand Callum’s thinking behind his choices. He explained himself to Emma but I just thought his reasoning was off. In the end true love prevailed. Thank you to NetGalley and Boldwood Books for this free advanced copy. i decided to give this book a second chance and it was a cute and breezy story but it didn't hook me as i expected. some things frustrated me like the internal monologue or some attitudes from callum. it ended up being a cute read but some topics could have been handled better.

Thanks NetGalley & the publisher for the copy of this book in exchange for my honest review!

This one was very blah for me. It took a lot to get into the story, and the characters felt very one dimensional and I struggled to connect with them.

Second Chance
Forced Proximity
Road Trip

Emma and Callum haven't seen each other in 12 years after a non-split split. Emma had given Callum an ultimatum to stop drinking, sort himself out and come back to her and he did stop drinking, and he did sort himself out, but he never went back to her.

Suddenly they're thrown together in Rome when Callum is stranded by an Icelandic volcano eruption and he desperately needs a ride back to London. Emma has been road tripping around Europe and is on her way back to London via a few cities in Italy and France. Their mutual friends arranged the connection, thinking they would make a cute couple but not actually knowing that the two of them had once been together.

The story moves pretty quickly and it was fun to read about their exploits in different Italian and French cities along the way. They actually do communicate, which seems like a first for most books! I liked both characters and I was really rooting for them to sort themselves out.

Thanks to NetGalley and Boldwood Books for the opportunity to read and review this ARC.

I enjoyed this book, it was a nice slow burn with a cute ending. The car situation did frustrate me, but it didn't take away anything from my overall enjoyment of the book.

This was actually a slow burn I enjoyed. The concept of the book is what drew me in - but when I realized it was going to be a slow burn, I was a bit nervous. However, I really enjoyed this one. Yes, there were parts that felt a bit repetitive, and it was drug out a bit, but I still found the story cute. I could have done without some of the internal monologue, I don't think it really added to the story. My one wish for the book is that it would have dived a little deeper into Callum's story - it seemed like it was a bit anticlimactic, and I feel like it could have been a good thing for the two characters to dissect together.

3.5 stars
This stroy grew on me. I started out with high hopes, then got a little disappointed as it didn't quite live up to my expectations and Callum seemed like a bit of an odd main male character, but then the story and the characters grew on me and I ended up enjoying the story.
Tropes: second chance romance & forced proximity
I enjoyed going on the journey with Emma and Callum, but I didn't love the characters so was less invested in the story than I would have been if I had loved the characters.
