Pia loves soccer. She would play it all the time, but no one else sees her as a soccer player. In reality, no one sees her at all. She does whatever she can to practice, including making her own soccer ball with plastic bags. Suddenly, her dad sees her and gives her a real soccer ball. And so it begins. The book follows the ups and downs of Pia and her journey to follow her dream.
Being a soccer parent, I was immediately attracted to this feel good story. I love Pia’s perseverance and dedication to following her dreams. The illustrations are colorful and will appeal to children of all ages. While the story follows her through the journey, I would have loved more details and inner thoughts through each step. It moves very quickly and leaves me hoping to know more about her, especially if the story is based off of a real person. It also introduces a website or app in the book, but it feels like a commercial instead of a natural part of the book. With a little more development, this would be a wonderful story.
My eldest is a huge soccer fan, and he's also on the shorter side for his age, so from the description of the book I thought the story would have more of a focus on courage and perseverance. Instead we were left wishing for more of a story and less of what felt only like an advertisement. It was short, made large leaps in time and didn't share much about the progress from young lover of the sport to successful professional athlete. This one was definitely lacking for me/us and felt like a missed opportunity to teach kids about finding their way in sports.
Kick for the Stars follows Pia who is a girl that loves soccer. The story follows Pia from when she was 6 and playing with a homemade soccer ball to when she was 16 and playing on the national team of the Philippines. The illustrations are bright and colorful, and the story has great messages about living your dream and not giving up when things get tough.
