C.W. James’ *The Tomb of Ptahmes* masterfully weaves together historical detail with inventive fiction, drawing readers from the haunting Libyan Desert to the lively streets of 1910 London. The story follows Carter Pinsent, the son of a British archaeologist, who is swept into a dangerous quest after uncovering the tomb of Ptahmes, an ancient Egyptian priest. Facing supernatural forces and intense rivalries, Carter is joined by the sharp-witted Sir Robert Ottley and his determined daughter, May. This fast-paced tale delves into themes of heritage, myth, and the unending human drive to uncover the unknown, making for a thrilling adventure.
From the very first page, *The Tomb of Ptahmes* captivates, inviting readers into a richly imagined world that straddles both history and fiction. Carter Pinsent stands out as a bold and daring protagonist, matched by May Ottley, whose intelligence and tenacity make her a perfect counterpart. The dark presence of Dr. Belleville heightens the suspense, weaving an intense struggle between good and evil.
James' attention to historical authenticity and realistic dialogue further grounds the story, enhancing its immersive quality. While the pacing at times lingers before pivotal events, the eerie supernatural elements and mysteries keep the suspense high. James’ skill in balancing myth with historical detail makes this novel a must-read for lovers of historical adventure and Egyptian mythology alike. *The Tomb of Ptahmes* truly shines as a standout in historical fiction, with its compelling plot and memorable characters.
This is my first time reading a book based on Ancient Egypt so I was skeptical but I am so glad I read it! I was pulled in from the start and was hooked!
This was brilliant. I loved the time period and the focus on Ancient Egypt. The story was so enriching that I’m now sold on whatever else C.W. James writes.
I love reading stories that are set in a different era. Egypt and London in the 1910s, WOW! I also love the different spin on the storyline. Usually with stories like this, it always boils down to world domination. This one is creepier, more interesting, better. I have learned loads of new old words just from reading this book.
This was an exciting story of mummies, adventure and light horror for teens. It didn't talk down to teens who might not know much about Egyptology and it did use the appropriate names for things. But that didn't bog down the story that built a bit slowly on the creep factor which I think developed the atmosphere and helped to sell the dread without it being a true horror novel. Things picked up and the writer delivered a well-written story that should appeal to people who liked the movie The Mummy. There was even a bit of romance. You don't have to be a teen to enjoy this read.
Thanks to Netgalley and the publisher for an ARC in exchange for an honest opinion.

This is the first book I’ve read by this author. I love ancient Egypt stories, especially if they’re set in the past. I really enjoyed the 1910 time period. I thought this was a really fun and short read. I loved the characters and the excavation of mummies. The writing was great and perfect for teens learning about Egypt. I would definitely read more books by this author.
I would recommend this book to anyone who enjoys ancient Egyptian stories!
So I'm actually studying to be an archaeologist with a focus on ancient Egypt and I had a blast with this book. It's so difficult to find a good ancient Egypt based book without being so smutty and I absolutely devoured this book. It was nicely paced and had a great mix of history with fiction. I don't give out many 5 stars but this was worth it
