While I no longer fall into the target demographic of YA novels, I still enjoy reading them and find that YA is still one of my favourite genres to read.
There was a lot going on in this book and the fast pace allowed me to truly get sucked into the audiobook. Granted, there was some points where Annie really annoyed me, however it seems I was not alone with my secondhand embarrassment from her as Kerry was often just as uncomfortable with her escapades as I was. Which was oddly comforting.
I am normally not a fan of Murder Mysteries however this one captured my attention through the sheer weirdness. Why would someone kill with a menstrual cup and the sexism shown clearly in a way that anyone can understand just how peculiar sexism itself can be, like why is it only considered to be worth investigating after a boy gets murdered, but not after the first victim (who was a girl). It's sad that such things happen, and it's accurate and shows how stupid sexism can be while also showing how prominent it still is in today's society.
Despite how awkward Annie made me feel at times though, I do think that she and Kerry are a good match, they work well together, and she does a great job of forcing Kerry out of her shell.

This looked and sounded like so much fun, I just had to grab it even though I'm definitely not anywhere near the target YA audience it's aimed at.
In fact, I'm definitely feeling my age after finishing it.
I loved the mash up of genres here.
There's so much going on and the pace was so fast that I couldn't help but get sucked into everything and speed through the book.
Remembering my own school days, I totally related to Annie and Kerry (yes, even after all these years!) - not in with the popular kids, yet desperate to be seen.
When they finally get a chance to go to their first party, things go drastically wrong when one of the group is found dead at the end of the night.
The storylines wove around each other nicely with a good flow.
Kerry and Scott's blossoming romance - the mystery of the cyber bullying - the murder of Selena and so much more than comes to light over time.
There was definitely a lot - but all the threads worked well and came together to create an enjoyable and shocking conclusion.
This was packed with humour throughout and I loved the banter between Kerry and Annie but also between them and pretty much everyone else...including the police! - who incidentally were pretty darn useless.
The only thing that got to me a little, was the constant mentioning of menstruation, periods, period products and the "correct" way to talk about this.
I actually found this hilarious at the start - it was mentioned - fine! - the period products formed part of the MO for the murders - funny! - they were pretty central to the storyline and I totally got that.
But the constant correcting people on the right language to use and the mini feminist lectures, just started to get a bit much.
Don't get me wrong, I know I'm of a different generation and yet I do absolutely get that times are changing.
I have nothing against this being brought to the readers attention and fitting it in with the theme of the storylines - but did it really need to be mentioned almost every chapter?
Other than this minor niggle, I really enjoyed this book.
It was well written with a great cast of characters and an intriguing and exciting plot - not to mention that it had me laughing out loud in places too.
My first read by this author and I'd definitely read more in the future.
💕Thank you to the author, publisher and NetGalley for my ARC copy - this is my honest review 💕
MURDER ON A SCHOOL NIGHT is a funny, feminist murder mystery that gets the teen experience spot on.
I was cackling a lot listening to this. Annie is just going after her detecting dreams no matter what, steam rollering everyone with her very misplaced confidence (and a complete lack of tact!) Kerry is shier, constantly wishing the ground would swallow her up, and with no clue what to do when a hot boy notices her.
It captures the awkwardness of teenagerhood, all the hormones and societal expectations. What do you want to do with life? With relationships romantic and platonic? How are you going to dealing with sexism on the overt and subtle levels? It's very raw and honest about it all, a great example of a book actually written for teens that gets them.
The mystery is also compelling - why would someone kill with a menstrual cup? And who is going to be next? I do like a murder mystery and this has such a unique hook to it through the weapon of choice.
Annie catapults the pair into detecting very much against Kerry's wishes, and for suspect motives. As well as trying to find the killer, the book also looks at the strains on their friendship. Even though Kerry's first romance has a lot of page time, the friendship felt more central, more important, which I liked.
There is a sequel out that I hope to pick up for more hilarious, feminist murder mysteries.
A romcom murder mystery for the Sex Education generation. The audiobook presentation is perfect. This is an absolute hoot. One of the most humorous first chapters I have ever listened to, and from there the fun just never lets up. Kate Watson presents us with the perfect exposé of the teenage ‘condition’. Kerry and her friend, Annie have survived school up to six form with each other’s friendship and support. But the new year is going to bring opportunities that neither could ever imagine, nor possibly survive. Thank you to Harper Collins UK Audio and NetGalley for the Audio ARC. This was so much fun! I loved the plot, the characters were chaotic and loveable! It was giving Angus Thongs and perfect snogging but if there was murder LOL! I really like that there was considerate anxiety representation with the main character, too. This was just a lot of chaotic messy fun 😁
