Paris rose to prominence as an heiress to the Hilton hotel empire but cultivated her fame and fortune as the IT Girl of the aughts. Led to believe they were saving their child’s life, Paris’s mother and father had her kidnapped and sent to a series of ‘emotional growth boarding schools’, where she survived almost two years of verbal, physical and sexual abuse. She came out, resolving to trust no-one but herself as she transformed that fantasy world into a multibillion-dollar reality.
I wasn’t sure about picking up this book when it was first released. However, I had heard praises since, so when this new edition with an additional bonus chapter was available to me, I jumped in.
This was a captivating memoir. I, of course, grew up seeing her on TV and media, with all her crazy stunts and scandals. I remember thinking ‘so this is what people do when money is no objection!’ 😁. So, it was refreshing to take a peek behind the curtain and see how Paris herself reflected on her past, and the portrayal of tabloids.
Paris has obviously been a business woman too, and the memoir effectively projected what she wanted to reveal at this stage of her life. I liked seeing her perspective on image and branding, and associating those in products vs. herself as a person. She basically made herself a character in a semi-fictional story she crafted in, and I admired her for it - because this was definitely a complex, challenging world to live in.
The Provo chapters were heartbreaking. While it was thought-provoking, sadly this wasn’t the first time I’d heard of those methods to ‘cure rebellion’. In the past, when ADHD and other traits were not diagnosed and understood in people (and kids), people resorted to radical approaches because of the fear of the unknown.
This memoir definitely opened my mind, and I’d recommend it to everyone regardless of what you think about Paris as a person, brand, and character. I’d implore you to listen to the audiobook and hear the story from Paris herself.
Paris should possibly have hired a professional narrator as Britney did. That said, from being very scornful of a 'famous for being famous vapid blonde' in the 90s, I have mellowed my opinion over the years and was curious about how Paris became the icon she did. This was interesting and honest. A look at an intelligent bussiness woman who hid behind a simpering mask because she was the product.
As a 90s girl I loved this book. It was so nice to see the tru woman behind the character I had grown up watching on tv and reading about in magazines.
Paris is truly a very talented business woman with a deeply emotional side. It was a pleasure to see her come out from behind the ditzy blond mask her insecurities made her hide behind for so long
Over the years, I've learned that Paris Hilton is actually very Intelligent and has been through a lot in her life. I was very excited to get approved for this audiobook and to be able to hear her story told through her own voice was great and empowering.
She has overcome a lot in her life and her story was very interesting!
I couldn’t get into this, I found Paris voice hard to listen to and her life just didn't grip me, it did get better towards the middle once I got into it. It just wouldn’t be something I would recommend unless Paris Hilton is someone you really like.
dnf, turns out I'm not as interested in Paris Hilton as I thought I was. Hilton's narration was very good tho.
The download date was unfortunately missed, I would be happy to re-review if it became available again. I have awarded stars for the book cover and description as they both appeal to me. I would be more than happy to re-read and review if a download becomes available. If you would like me to re-review please feel free to contact me at thesecretbookreview@gmail.com or via social media The_secret_bookreview (Instagram) or Secret_bookblog (Twitter). Thank you.
Listening to Paris Hilton’s memoir was a surprisingly engaging experience. What I loved most is that it’s self-narrated. Paris brings her story to life in a way that only she could, adding personal touches and emotions that a third-party narrator just wouldn’t capture.
She shares insights into her life, her struggles, and her triumphs with a candor that’s both refreshing and endearing.
I have to admit I find it hard to give a star rating to someone's life story. Who am I to rate Paris Hilton’s experiences? However, in terms of how the book is presented and how engaging it is, I’d give it five stars. It's an intimate, honest look into her world, and Paris’s narration truly makes it shine.
I wasn’t sure if I was going to like this or. not.
I didn’t know much about Paris Hilton when I started to read it.
It was insightful and interesting.
What she went though in the school she was sent to is shocking and well done for her standing up against these people now.
I enjoyed it
This is such an eye opening and moving memoir that shows a side to Paris I had not seen portrayed in the media. I grew up with Paris as a pop culture icon and so I found a lot of her tales nostalgic and it was interesting to revisit the memories with an adult perspective. I am so pleased I listened to this, it really added to journey through Paris's life.
I don't quite know where to begin with this review. As much as this is a memoir by Paris Hilton there are so many different famous names we may know mentioned in this book I feel in order to review the depths here it is better to set all those individuals aside so I can review the backbone of this book.
I think also its important that we recognise that people in the public eye are still other beings and therefore as stated in this book at times Paris said she wanted to hide away we have gone too far with idolisong those we believe to have it better than us, well maybe this book will open your eyes a little to a different world knowing all is not as it appears!! As the old saying goes, you never know what goes on behind closed doors!!!
This story for me is about exposure of various things that go on in life some of course you or someone you know sadly have experienced but for purposes of this review the refrances are made in particular to the world many of us don't live in by the way things happen, are dealt with and handled known to us as Hollywood. This does not take away from many around the world who have also faced similar heinous acts.
The military style bootcamps that are refranced where children, mainly teenagers, have been abused or killed have been reported on before. Hearing it in this audiobook is truly disturbing to really grasp the methods used by these people who continued to abuse under the guise of a troubled child/teen who needed discipline. Exploitation in so many ways for their own sadistic self gratification.
The book exposes various sexual assaults such as revenge porn but more disturbing is how children/teens can be and are groomed within the multi-faceted industry that involves influencers, modelling, television, movies, singers etc known to us in this story as Hollywood!!!
Many see the glitz and glamour, however, fail to look at the more sadistic, evil, and corrupt side of this industry. Sadly, there are many times where it appears the parents may be aware and more so the controlling side of what happens to these children by putting them into camps or their awareness of certain acts where they turn a blind eye for unbeknown reasons to us or more importantly their child!
The damage these acts can cause to any person is absolutely horrific and most definitely does not just stop, as these children grow into adults they are traumatised, leading to varying states of survival mode.
To then have someone hired as a fixer because of paparazzi which most of us are aware of the damage that can be caused at their hands as far as death sadly in the case of Diana I can understand. However, it also poses the question to me personally if one individual has so much influence and / or the power of others, then why? How is that possible? Unfortunately, there is corruption everywhere in our world, and Hollywood most definitely does not fall short of this either!
Another area that troubled me as my own pov is the decision to clone I appreciate and accept all have individual thoughts on many things that's what makes the world we love in unique but isn't that the point? I understand loss and grief extremely well, the reasons someone wishes to have that little dog back that they loved so deeply however it is not going to be the same dog animals have souls as do we so where does this begin and end is a worrying question for me!
With all due respect, the fact the original dog appears to then be split into 2 really poses these questions of ethics, morals, authenticaticy of what is actuality because you simply can not bring back what has gone. I know I'd rather grieve and have memories of the dog I loved and shared a life with than to attempt to bring my pet back in some other form because frankly, it will never be the same pet. Souls evolve we can not simply create their lives over again because we need to fill a gap or hole in our own selves this is a sad truth I believe we need to know and try to understand deeply!
What we should try to take away from this memoir is how people can survive the most henious sadistic crimes, people can and do get justice, karma does come around and one day survivors will be villified, free and able to live a happy stable fullfilling happy life with real love and comfort from people who love them fully without condition, expectation or harm!!!
My heart goes out to any and all survivors of any type of abuse. Nobody should ever be harmed at the hands of another. Moving forward, the more awareness we all have, the more peaceful, joyful, and content everyone can live.
With thanks to Netgalley & Harper Collins UK Audio for this ARC in return for an honest review.
It's is great to listen to an autobiography read by the person themselves.
Alot of the time we think we know celebrities and their stories. We actually only know snippets.
This book is a bare all. I have to be honest, I knew nothing about Paris Hilton and I loved this memoir. I thoroughly enjoyed it. It was compelling and I had not realised what she had experienced by then at a young age.
A fab read.
Thank you to Paris Hilton, Netgalley and HarperCollins Uk Audio for this informative read.
Paris Hilton is and always has been rich and privileged. She is also a human being who has gone through some truly awful experiences. She has been groomed by her teacher, SA-ed, raped, pretty much tortured by the troubled teen industry, was in a sex tape at 19, had her home broken into several times. She did not profit from that tape. She has gone through trauma and is a strong woman using her experience to fight to protect "troubled teens". She has ADHD and I think that comes across in her book. She struggled with school and expectations, she struggled with public exposure. She raises many valid points in her book. It pains me to confess that I made fun of her back in The Simple Life days and I'm sorry about that. I made comments about her sex tape (that I have never watched and never will) and I'm sorry about that too. Her baby voice developed as a coping mechanism and she struggles not to use it. She loves animals and they soothe her.
An iinteresting nsight to the story and mind oan heiress who is,famous for, well, being famous. Whilst it felt like an honest telling of often very painful memories for her in her years as a troubled teen and it's uplifting to see her find some peace and happiness now. However I was surprised to hear she is also a supermodel, actress, artist, and overall icon on par with Marilyn Monroe.....
Learning the real truth behind Paris Hilton was so much more poignant and honest than I first thought.
I loved this book and the narration. Author has shared her experiences along with bitter memories and traumatic events. I felt like I am listening to the memoir of a normal person not a celebrity. Living with ADHD and all the traumatic experiences that shaped her. She has shared her raw experiences. The author has introduced us to her family and their ideologies as well as taken us deep inside the entertainment industry. Paris said such thoughtful things about marriage, honesty, mistakes we make in teen years and how important is to make those mistakes so that we can learn to make right choices in life. Despite everything in life, she never lost hope and kept believing in herself. Generally we become pessimistic after traumatic experiences we go through and it’s hard to stay optimistic but the author always tried to look everything from an optimistic perspective. This was an uplifting and moving read. Author said at the end, only you can tell your story and it is meant to be shared with the world.
I personally feel traumatic things that happens in childhood and teenage years sabotage our growth and make us sabotage our emotions as well but I learned from the memoir that we must change our perspective towards them so they lose control over us and we continue to grow.
Thanks to Harper Collins Publisher and the Author.
Big thanks to NetGalley and the publisher for letting me experience Paris Hilton's memoir, "Paris: The Memoir," as an audiobook!
This isn't the fluffy, party-girl story you might expect. Paris offers a refreshingly candid and compassionate look back at her life. Forget self-pity or victimhood; this is a masterclass in taking ownership of your narrative and embracing your journey, flaws and all.
Prepare to be surprised. Paris delves into the dark realities of her past, including shocking experiences of sexual abuse. But this isn't a story defined by trauma. It's a testament to resilience, a chronicle of rising above adversity and achieving success on her own terms.
The audiobook format is particularly powerful. Hearing Paris's voice adds a layer of vulnerability and strength that truly resonates. It's a tender and triumphant account, one that left me wanting more. No wonder it shot straight to the New York Times Bestseller list!
I love listening to books about a life lived and Paris Hilton has certainly achieved that. I loved its honestly and the covering of difficult topics. Whilst there are some more fun parts do I think overall this is a book about giving a voice to those who need it. Paris Hilton is aware of her privileges and is using them for good. Also just because she is privileged does not mean she has had a simple life. This book is definitely going to help people. The audio is great as her personality really comes across! Thank you to NetGalley and the Publisher for an ARC. This is a voluntary review of my own thoughts.
I was intrigued to see this audiobook available to request as I don't know much about Paris Hilton only random things I have seen over the years in the press, this audiobook surprised me and didn't realise this would be an interesting listen and actually liked listening to her story! I would round this up to 4 stars overall as I flew through this in a day but nothing life changing for me. Thanks to netgalley and the publisher for this audio arc.
Paris Hilton gives a gracious and compassionate perspective: The memoir is noted for the way she views her past, without self-pity or martyrdom1s. She takes ownership of her story and delivers a masterclass in possessing and sharing your own story and living with purpose1
She is candid and the book is furiously honest about multiple instances of sexual abuse she suffered as an adolescent. : It reveals a true story of resilience in the face of trauma and rising above it all to success
The memoir has surprising depth and purpose, offering a tender and triumphant account of her life so far.. The book iwasan instant New York Times Bestseller4. and that’s not surprising. A great listen and very unexpected
