Ellie was kidnapped as a teenager and although she escaped and the culprit was convicted, twenty years later history repeats itself with her daughter Jess.
The first part of the novel shows us a young Ellie and a teenage romance with Josh who is haunted by the fame of having murdered his previous girlfriend. Although it mainly focuses on the relationship between the young Ellie and Josh, it also begins to develop the mystery and question marks with very suspicious characters of dubious behavior.
Twenty years later they begin a relationship again and it is at that moment when Ellie's daughter disappears making them suspect that the real culprit is free.
The two parts are very well defined and written so that you get into the story as a YA and end up having in your hands a very enjoyable and readable mystery.
Who's ready to sink their teeth in a book that bites back ?
Oh, you too?
That's what I thought
With a title like The Girl in the Basement, I knew right then, I was all in,
No need to read the synopsis, I wanted to go in blind
me oh my, was this a doozy.
There is no shortage of breathtaking moments.
Well written, perfectly plotted and the delivery was on point.
You slayed Eoin Dempsey, and I am so here for it .
Twenty years ago she was taken. Now her daughter is next! Great read!!! I thoroughly enjoyed reading this one!! This book had it all! It had great suspense, intrigue, mystery, murder, revenge, a fantastic who done it and a great storyline! I highly recommend reading this book as it was well worth reading! Ellie was taken at a party twenty years ago and held hostage, but luckily escaped. Twenty years later, with her own daughter, Josh comes back into her life – her high school sweetheart. Will history repeat when her daughter, Jess, is taken?
The first half of The Girl in the Basement was more of a YA novel which usually doesn’t interest me but was surprisingly good. The rest was twenty years later and has Jess and Josh as adults and that’s when the twists started. It kept my interest until the end, and I ended up liking it more than I thought I would!

‘Straight A’ grade student Ellie Welsh has a good life. A happy family and great friends. After the long summer break she returns to Lower Merion High School for her final year before college, eager to catch up with the friends she has missed over the summer. Unusually for the first day of school, a pep rally is called and everyone is excited to find out what the news is. Enter Josh Thomas, an amazing football talent, who, as quarterback, will bring the school glory on the field. There are mixed reactions, not everyone is happy. Josh has moved to the area to escape the gossip and innuendo at his old school due to his girlfriend being murdered just six months before and at one time he was the prime suspect. Needless to say, the pair couple up, become an item and then the problems start!
The first half of this book reads very much like a YA story, with somewhat dark undertones. When the second half begins we are twenty years later and much has changed. Together once again, Ellie and Josh face adversity and trauma, with some surprises along the way.
An interesting read, though not totally compelling. A fair few loopholes and far fetched scenarios, but a good enough read for a holiday.
Easy and quick, a book that passes the time but won’t stick in the memory for long.
2.5*
Thank you NetGalley and Storm Publishing.
The Girl in the Basement by new to me author Eoin Dempsey, published by Storm Publishing, is a general fiction, mystery thriller of its finest.
Ellie was kidnapped 20 years ago and barely escaped. She started living her life, build a career, had a family. But now it seems history repeats itself when her daughter Jess vanishes. A race against time starts and keeps the reader deep in suspense, high strung with twists and unexpected turns around every corner. A fantastic read, 5 stars.
