This has potential but was hard to follow. It is advertised as Gilmore Girls with a magical twist and the author did a great job at that, I just felt it was hard to follow the conversations. What makes Gilmore Girls great is all the words they can fit into a sentence quickly, but when reading, it just moves a little slower.
This book just wasn’t for me. Trying to get through it was painful. The writing style, the Donald trump reference, I just couldn’t do it, sorry. Dnf. It’s a shame, I think the story has potential but I would definitely rework some things.
This is a good palette cleanser book for when you need something cosy after a heavy read. It gives you a small town vibe that is perfect for the fall season.
I wished there was more to the storyline as it lost me in places but I loved the family element and the way magic is brought into the book due to something not so good.
great fall read. gives good witch vibes very fun!!!! I really enjoyed reading this in October it helped to get into the spooky season mood.
I was very excited to get my hands on this book because I read the premise and was instantly excited.
Im sad to say that I felt it had tons of potential, but didnt win me over. It was a slow and hard read for me, and I only finished because I do not like to not finish my books. The characters lacked depth, the town was cute, but that was it. For some reason, I also think that reading thru it was hard.
This was.... less good than I hoped. I put in down last fall because I thought I had just overdone it with witchy books, and unfortunately when I picked it back up recently, I just found it to be a little stale. With so many diverse voices and unique scenarios in the genre, this just felt really flat and uninteresting. I'd try other books by the author in the future, but this just didn't land for me.
Anything that is described as being perfect for Gilmore girls. Count me in. It is one of the best tv shows out there so I will Defintely read any book that is likened to it
I can certainly see why it is compared and if you are a fan of Gilmore girls you will Defintely love this book
It is a cosy family drama that I was instantly hooked on frok the first couple of chapters. I really enjoyed the storyline with the bit of mystery in it. I would highly recommend this book
Normally, I am not one for second romance tropes but this one was easily one of the cutest I have read and maybe that’s because it was not the sole focus on the book. The perfect read for any gilmore girl small town vibes, witches, mystery and magic and a romance that has you rooting for almost from the beginning! This is a good book for the quick quiet read when you just want to sit down and unwind from the day!
3! Impractical Magic by Emily Grimoire is perfect for cozy fall reading, offering a blend of Gilmore Girls charm and Charmed magic. The story follows Scarlett Melrose as she returns to her hometown of Oak Haven to help her estranged sisters lift a curse on their mother’s inn. Things take a chaotic turn when a spell backfires and her old flame, Nate, re-enters the picture, adding even more tension to the mix.
The pumpkin-spiced atmosphere makes it a great pick for autumn, but I found myself wishing for a deeper connection with the characters. While the magical concepts were fun and creative, the story felt like it could have been more impactful with stronger dynamics between Scarlett and Nate. It’s a cute read, but a shorter, more focused approach might have brought out its full potential.
Thank you to NetGalley and Avon for this eARC.

Impractical Magic is not usually my type of book, but it surprised me! A fluffy, cosy book with some small town vibes, making me think of Gilmore Girls. I have seen this described as the perfect autumn read and I wouldn't disagree. I found it to be a good pallet cleanser and enjoyed the focus on family dynamics, though I felt the pop culture references and puns were a little silly and overdone. I felt for the most part that the characters needed a bit more depth, and the main character's inner monologue was very repetitive.
It has made me consider reading more like this!
Thank you to NetGalley and the author for providing this ARC in exchange for an honest review!
I wanted to love this book, and I do get the appeal. However the references to other magical worlds from famous books, and media pulled me right out of the story and I found kind of unnecessarily pandering. That being said, it was fun and sweet and I did enjoy it over all.
While this was a fun autumn filled read, it felt a bit surface level to me. It was trying to be something it was not (Gilmore girls?) but threw in paranormal vibes. The FMC was not my favorite and that could be why it was not for me.
Impractical Magic by Emily Grimoire delivers cozy fall vibes and is described as a mix of Gilmore Girls and Charmed. This second-chance romance follows Scarlett Melrose as she returns to her small hometown of Oak Haven to help her estranged sisters break a curse on their mother’s inn. Things get even more complicated when she crosses paths with her old flame, Nate, and her spell goes awry, leaving her to clean up a magical mess.
I recommend reading this book in the fall to align with its pumpkin-spiced atmosphere. While I loved the premise and setting, I struggled to connect with the characters, and the story felt like it could have used a bit more depth, particularly in the dynamic between Scarlett and Nate. The fun, unique magical concepts added some charm, but ultimately, nothing stood out enough to make it a favorite for me. If it were a little shorter and more focused, it might have been more my style.
That said, if you enjoy lighthearted magical romances with a cozy seasonal twist, this book could be the perfect addition to your autumn TBR!
This was the perfect cozy read for the fall. It has a way of keeping you wanting to read the next chapter. The story is magical! love love love
Cute autumn read. Romance was lacking, though. It just never felt really developed and relied on the previous feelings of the characters to follow them through ten years later. I liked the sibling interaction between the girls and appreciated how messy they were with each other. I did like the main storyline of saving the town's magic! I think this would be a fantastic read for anyone who likes Gilmore Girls and Practical Magic!
A magical little book. A home town cloaked in mystery, where the average person forgets Oak Haven when they leave.
Our Scarlett returning home after hearing from her estranged sister that magic has gone wrong and they need her help.
Such a cute home town, with a magical book store and a handsome man from her past... highly recommend as a heart warming read!
Unfortunately this one was a miss for me. I thought the concept of the story was good but the execution let it down. I found the FMC very frustrating to follow in the story due to her constant self pity and "woe is me" vibe and therefore I didn't find myself routing for her at all. There was no depth to the romance, and no real exploration of their past together - you are just sort of expected to trust that they are destined to be together? To round it all up too, I hated how the resolution was dragged out over a year (for no reason at all) but covered and summarised in the space of a paragraph.
This has so much potential if it had been edited and thought through for a bit longer!
Oak Haven is a magical town - literally. Scarlett Melrose was raised there and left after blowing up her life. Now she's called home by her sisters to fix the town's magic, but of course it isn't that easy to fix and Scarlett will have to face all her past troubles in the process.
This is a fun, cozy fall read. I loved the quirky town members and the silliness of the magic. Overall a fun book for a fall afternoon.
Thank you to NetGalley and Avon Books UK for the ARC of Impractical Magic.
This was a cute and fun book to read for the Halloween season. I did think that the dialogue and ending could be improved for a more well-rounded book. It definitely gave Gilmore Girls vibes, which I thought was a fun experience. The main character was not very likable and some of the references were over the top, but overall not a bad book. There is definitely an audience out there that would enjoy this!
I really wanted to love Impractical Magic, especially with such a captivating title and premise! The story follows Scarlett, a character with great potential, but unfortunately, I found her journey to be a bit underwhelming. The magical elements were intriguing, but the pacing felt off, leaving me longing for more excitement and depth.
The dialogue aimed for whimsy, but often missed the mark, coming off as forced rather than enchanting. I struggled to connect with the characters, which made it hard to care about their arcs. There were moments of promise, but they just didn’t quite materialize into a gripping story.
While this one didn’t resonate with me, I do see potential in Grimoire's writing. Here’s hoping her future works shine even brighter! 🌟
