This takes place in 1928 when FMC Millie gets a new job in a haunted mansion in a new place. The MMC is Callum, a professor. They have great chemistry, and it's sweet mixed with spice. I was thrilled with both. The side characters were interesting, and the banter between the main characters was delightful. It's sort of a slow burn, but it has enough time for some spicy scenes. The pacing is a bit off, but the writing is good. I would read more from this author. This is the first book I have read by this author, and I wasn't disappointed. This book twists and turns, and nothing is as it seems. You should read it if you like gothic romance or suspense in your romance.

I loved this cozy mystery and it's just perfect that it was released on Halloween. If you are in need of some fall vibes and a little mystery I would definitely pick this up!

However, she is soon sidetracked by the unnerving chemistry she and the Professor have, leading to a slow burn gothic romance. Will she find out what happened to his wife, or will the same grave fate take her?

This book is Crimson Peak meets Diavola and I LOVED IT! To say I loved this book is an understatement. I felt intertwined with Millie as she struggled with the horror she faced but also the desire she felt towards her employer. Northwick does such an amazing job describing the atmosphere that I felt as though Millie and I were in on this adventure together. Northwick’s gothic styled romance was one I didn’t know I so desperately needed.

A very entertaining book that led to ask many many questions about the mystery that was occurring at our stay of this fantastical manor.

I will say I wish we received more from our dearly loved Professor Hughes in the sense that he came across very one dimensional.

I did really enjoy the twist and how everything came together about why people were acting the way they were. I guess the only thing that is bugging me is wouldn’t Millie have recognized the handwriting in the journals??

This book was totally intriguing to me. It was romantic but gothic but also mysterious. I would say this book leans more towards gothic romance but I could be wrong. Either way this book kept me hooked and I wanted to read more.

We meet Millie after she leaves a mental ward after suffering traumatic amnesia and she searches for a job only to accept one at the Willowfield Estate. There, she will be working for Professor Callum, who has become a recluse. Now the estate, once beautiful, has fallen into disrepair since the lady of the estate passed away. It will become Millie’s job to take care of the estate under his watchful eye.

Things happen at the estate and the story has thriller/horror themes interlaced in the book. With the twists and turns to this book, the reader is quickly hooked to the book and you want to uncover all of the mysteries. I was left wanting more.
I definitely recommend that you read this book!

I kind of had an idea of what this might have been going into it, a dark gothic romance with some spice. It was definitely that, sprinkled some paranormal/thriller/horror vibes. The twist and turns in this book are next level, it is definitely a book that makes you think. I will probably be recommending this constantly!

The genre of this is hard to pin down. It is undoubtedly romance and gothic historical fiction, but there are other vibes: some thriller, some horror, and a feeling of the paranormal. The twists and turns kept me guessing, and while I had figured out pieces, I was still surprised at how masterfully it all came together.

I am not a huge thriller fan, but one of my book clubs loves thrillers, and I think this would be an excellent book for them! Although the spice level may change our typical discussions...

This book had intense Beauty and the Beast vibes, with a bit of Jane Eyre and Rebecca thrown in for good measure.

I am excited to read whatever Bea Northwick puts out next!

I love gothic romances so this was the perfect fit for me! It's eerie and ominous and lowkey a bit unnerving at times. I really liked watching the story and mystery uncoil. The plot twists and reveals were definitely unexpected, and I always appreciate it when I can't predict the ending of mysteries. I did think the resolution was a bit rushed, so that was my main issue with the book. I found out there's a novella in Callum's POV too so I will definitely check that out!

I loved the world-building in this book and was hooked on Millie’s story from the beginning. The twist at the end of the book will leave you shaken!! I can’t wait for more from Bea Northwick and hope to get more in this world, maybe a lil more from Callum's POV!!

First off, thank you so much for an ARC copy. This was a really amazing gothic romance. I finished the book about 30 minutes ago and have just been here collecting my thoughts and I’m still not sure I’ll be able to express everything I want to. I’m not even going to lie, I had to call my husband just to express my thoughts and feelings, even if they came out jumbled.

I LOVED this book. It’s a bit outside what I normally read but really has me wanting to read more by this author, of this genre, I’m hooked. It took me a minute to get into it with the writing style being mostly accurate for a period piece. But man, the story, bonkers, wild, captivating, beautiful, horrifying, haunting, exhilarating. I can’t even think of all the words I need.

Everything I thought I could guess about the plot always changed, it made me absolutely NEED to devour this to figure out the great mystery that is Willowfield. I found myself holding my breath at the end of this book, the suspense was so high. But with that, it was beautifully wrapped in the most satisfying way.

I wish I could erase this book from my memory just to read it again. The visuals that were described felt so expertly crafted and really made me feel like I was with the main character at Willowfield.

Ugh. I really can’t even get out how much I loved this. Seriously, just go read it.

This was so fascinating to read and I couldn’t put it down until I knew for certain how the mystery came all together. This was one of those books where I was sure I had it figured out but then a small detail would make me go well…actually maybe it’s not what I think it was. THEN end up on this winding path of mystery that lead me to the conclusion I originally thought of but didn’t know all the small details that lead to it. This was a slow burn mystery/thriller with a romantic element tied into it that only amplified the intensity of the story.

We start with Millicent "Millie" Foxboro, who is leaving her current job to take a new position helping Professor Hughes at his estate; he is a recent widow and is still grieving. His estate, Willowfield, is in disrepair, and a home of a reformer grandeur creates the gothic gloomy setting for the book. As she becomes more involved in the professor's life and work, Millie draws herself into a web of secrets.

Millie's character has a very active imagination. She is also a tale of sadness and isolation. The ghost of a woman haunts her, and she hears voices. You spend most of the book wondering if she is losing her mind or if someone is trying to make her lose her mind. You start to think everyone is a suspect and look for a motive. The novel's strength lies in its atmospheric setting and ability to weave romance and mystery elements.

The Cruel Dark was a hauntingly beautiful gothic romance that took place in the year 1928. The story surrounds Millie, who is hired as the assistant to Professor Hughes at his estate. There is mystery, intrigue, angst, and dark romance in this story. I loved the relationship development between Millie and Callum, and found myself fascinated by the story line. The prose was almost lyrical and the author did a wonderful job at drawing an image of the scenery. Though I wasn’t sure what to expect from Callum at the beginning, I grew to love the various sides of him (including the 🌶️ side). There were several plot twists; however, due to a great deal of foreshadowing, several of them I had expected. Nonetheless, this was an enchanting read that takes you on a historical journey. Would definitely recommend if you’re into dark gothic romance with some mystery/thriller 🖤
