Polished and eminently readable, the latest in the Eddie Flynn series is a reliable page-turner. It’s true to form, but there’s a sense of it all being a little bit “samey” - although that never seemed to do James Bond any harm!
Flynn is a great creation, the naughty boy turned good guy, and it would be a shame for this series to start nose-diving. Witness 8 has great story at its heart so I’ll forgive you this time Cavanagh but just be careful next time…
Steve Cavanagh has done it again with another 5 star read! Witness 8 is the eighth book in the Eddie Flynn series and in this page-turner there is a price on Eddie's head due to his choice of client.
Will an innocent man go to prison for murder or will Eddie be able to work his magic again?
You could definitely read this book as a standalone if you haven't read the other Eddie Flynn books and you're in for a treat getting to know this dodgy character. Give it a go, you won't regret it!
I loved this book ad devoured it over a couple of days. I have read all Cavanagh's books and he keeps getting better and better. Thoroughly recommend you dive into this world.
West 74th Street is a nice, monied neighbourhood but when a woman is murdered, the well-heeled residents shun the accused. Eddie Flynn and his team are brought in to conduct the defence of John Jackson, a rich surgeon accused of shooting his neighbourhood, the murder weapon found in his house. Flynn also has another problem, in defending a client he has brought the wrath of the corrupt police down on him and there is now a contract on his life. This brings Mr Christmas to New York, a cultured assassin, and he picks up another contract, one Ruby Johnson, and she has links to 74th Street.
Cavanagh writes really entertaining thrillers that also have a wicked sense of humour running through them and this is no exception. The plotlines intertwine wonderfully and the twists are fabulous. The characterisation is excellent and sophisticated for this genre of novel. It's an addictive read.
Absolutely loved this book! From page one I was hooked and couldn’t wait to pick the book back up.
Thank you NetGalley and publisher for a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.
I have read all of Steve Cavanagh's Eddie Flymm books, and each one works really well as a stand alone. But, I think the history from.book 1 to now, 8, makes it an even better read.
This latest Eddie Flynn turn is the best yet. We continue to learn more about Eddie and the other characters in his team. We're also introduced to another villan, one who is fairly complex, Ruby the nanny. Her background makes her a really interesting character, and the depth that ts demonstrated by her love for her mum, coupled with her lack of feeling and remorse for those she kills, make her super interesting.
I'd encourage anyone to read this book, whether it's their first introduction to Eddie Flynn or like me, it's the continuation of the series.
Another amazing book by Steve Cavanagh and again he had me hooked from the start- I don’t know what it is but I’m always wanting to find out what happens next! I also done think I can ever get bored of the Eddie Flynn series, I love the way his mind works and how clever he can be especially with his side kicks by his side. I don’t want to write too much as I don’t want to give anything away but this book is well worth a read!!
Steve Cavanagh does it again - full of twists and turns which kept me on the edge of my seat. Non-negotiable 5*'s!
While I enjoy the Eddie Flynn series, I didnt think Witness 8 was as good as the rest of the books but it was still enjoyable.
I don’t know quite how Steve Cavanagh manages to hit it out of the park with every book her writes, but he does!
Gripping, thrilling and tense, I loved it. Highly recommended.
I love Steve Cavanagh books and this was no exception
Gripping
Fast paced and addictive
I couldn’t put this book down
Well written
Great read
5 Stars from me
I absolutely love the Eddie Flynn series and have listened to the majority of them on Audible largely because of the excellent delivery of them by Adam Sim who completely brings Eddie Fly and co to life.
Steve Cavanagh has created a deeply likeable character in Eddie Flynn and is exceptional at making even bit players within his books feel like well rounded individuals. Back stories are hand crafted to be engaging, and the million side stories are all as compelling as the main story.
So much to praise in this book - there are hooks galore making this a very hard book to put down. Eddie and his loyal crew just get better with every incarnation and their own lives, loves and dramas feel like a natural part of the story. There are some other notable superb characters in Witness 8, not least of which is Mr Christmas.
I loved this book and cannot recommended it, and the rest of the series, highly enough. I hope the author has a few more Eddie books in him and I could easily see this series ending up as a TV series.
Ruby Johnson still refers to West 74th Street as ‘her street’ but Ruby no longer lives on this street and hasn’t for quite a while. Ruby used to live in the street with her mum and dad until her dad lost all their money. Ruby now lives with her mum in a rundown apartment. Ruby works for lots of people on the street - she minds their children, cleans and does as many jobs as she can. She knows every one of the residents and all of their secrets and she stores them all way for future use. On the way home one night Ruby witnesses a murder and she knows who the murderer is but she says it was some one else. Ruby has a grand plan to make lots of money and get as far away from the area as possible and she does what she can to make this money.
Eddie Flynn is a lawyer who used to be a crook- he represents the man Ruby said was the killer. Eddie isn’t afraid to bend rules to get the information he needs.
This is the first Steve Cavanagh book I have read and I really enjoyed it. Thanks to NetGalley and the publishers for an advance copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.
This book had such a brilliant plot line throughout! Has you thinking throughout and guessing, but I love how hooked it has you throughout!
Ruby witnesses a murder. She knows who the killer is so calls the Police but did she give the right name? Or does she have her own agenda. Eddie finds himself on the case of the accused killer and is soon embroiled in his own dramas but can the truth be found.
This was a real thrill ride and there is a lot going on. It did take me a while to get into the story but I was hooked eventually. There's various plots happening at the same time but they do eventually converge and balance. The characters are interesting. They all have their own flaws and darkness yet you warm to certain ones. I must admit I did come to like Mr Christmas in particular. Eddie is one of those characters who has quite the past and isnt the best. Yet you find yourself rooting and enjoying his methods. The ending was really good with a twist or two thrown in that I didnt get until just before it was revealed. A brilliant thriller.
Tried and tested formula from this author on his 8th book with the ever popular Eddie Flynn as chief protagonis, the Conman turned lawyer. A witness who convinces with deadly believability that the truth she makes up as she goes along makes her a credible witness . Convincing enough that her truth is the truth that results in an innocent man accused of murder. Three dimensional characters all players in a cat and mouse game in which the reader must suspend belief , enjoy the twists and turns as they roll off the page thick and fast in order to enjoy yet another nail biting conclusion from this popular author. Many thanks to author, publisher and Netgalley for this ARC.
Eddie Flynn returns with another edge of your seat rollercoaster of a story!
The Eddie Flynn series are some of my favourite books, as soon as an upcoming book is announced, it goes straight on my TBR and I wait with bated breath for its release. Witness 8 was no exception.
Whilst this instalment isn’t my favourite of the series, it is a fantastic book and Cavanagh has ensured that the twist is one that’s hard to see coming.
Overall, a really enjoyable story that I read in one sitting
In Steve Cavanagh’s latest installment of the Eddie Flynn series, the sharp-tongued trial lawyer and former conman faces a perilous situation. Not only is he defending John Jackson, a pediatric brain surgeon falsely accused of murder, but he’s also being hunted by several hitmen, including a mysterious figure known as Mr. Christmas.
The case begins when Ruby Johnson, a house cleaner, witnesses the murder of her employer, Maggs, in Manhattan. Ruby, however, is no ordinary witness—there’s something unsettling about her. After recognizing the killer, she retrieves the murder weapon and frames Jackson by planting the gun in his home, setting off a chain of events that throws his and his wife’s lives into turmoil.
Eddie and his skilled team, including law partner Kate Brooks and investigator Gabriel Lake, are pushed to their limits as more bodies turn up and the pressure mounts. The twists and turns in the case keep the suspense high, even if some familiar Flynn antics make an appearance.
Despite a few predictable moments, Cavanagh’s ability to craft engaging characters—especially Ruby and Mr. Christmas—ensures this thriller keeps readers hooked. Fans of the series will be eager for what’s next.
I love this series, and Witness 8 doesn’t disappoint. When you think Cavanagh can’t surprise you anymore, he somehow manages it. A real page-turner, and I’m looking forward to more Eddie Flynn.
Ruby Johnson, once a resident of Manhattan's prestigious West 74th Street, now finds herself working as a maid for the wealthy families she once envied. Her family’s fortunes were lost due to her father’s gambling, and his disappearance left Ruby and her mother struggling to rebuild their lives.
As Ruby cleans the opulent homes of her former social elite, she discovers a chance to change her circumstances forever. After witnessing a murder in one of the residences, she sees an opportunity to secure her future and her mother’s by manipulating the situation for financial gain. Ruby makes an anonymous call to the police, falsely implicating someone she knows.
Enter Eddie Flynn, a conman turned lawyer tasked with defending the innocent man Ruby has framed. Known for his unorthodox methods and willingness to bend the rules, Eddie is a formidable figure in the legal world. As Ruby’s plans unfold, Eddie must navigate a maze of deceit and betrayal to uncover the truth.
With intricate twists and a chillingly calculated antagonist, this thriller will keep you on edge from start to finish. If you enjoy a high-stakes drama with a cold, calculated villain and a reckless lawyer determined to uncover the truth, this book is a must-read.
