The first I have read by this author, and while it is a character from a series of books it was such a gripping read as a standalone. Gripping from the early chapters, with a good balance of twists and turns. A story of family, and what lengths people would go to when protecting those close to them.
I will definitely be reading more.
This is another cracking tale in an excellent series.
Eddie Flynn is a conman turned lawyer and is such a great character, as are his team. In this plot a woman who used to live in an exclusive area of New York, now working as a nanny / maid / cleaner sees a murder. However, instead of telling the police who the murderer is, she points the finger at an innocent man. What follows causes the disintegration of this man’s family and in the midst of the subsequent court case, Eddie has a contract taken out on him.
It’s fast paced and with twists and turns and I couldn’t wait to see how it all tied up; which it does, perfectly.
Thanks to NetGalley and Headline for the opportunity to preview.
4.5 ⭐️
Thank you so much to NetGalley for giving me an advanced copy of this book!!
This was my first book by Steve Cavanagh and it certainly didn’t disappoint! I didn’t know that this was part of a series of interconnected stand-alones so I am now so excited to get to the rest of them!
This book was fast paced and kept me engaged the whole way through. While certain parts were slightly cliche as often seen in this genre, I thought the twists and turns were great.
This would make a great book club book and would lead to many interesting discussions!
Below is the blurb
"Ruby Johnson is a nanny and maid to wealthy families in Manhattan's West 74th Street.
She knows their routines. Their secrets.
One night, on her way home, Ruby witnesses a neighbour's murder.
She knows the victim. She knows the killer.
She makes an anonymous call to the police and names the murderer.
But Ruby didn't tell the truth...
Because there's something wrong with Ruby Johnson.
Eddie Flynn, conman turned trial lawyer, must defend an innocent man accused of this terrible crime.
As Ruby's deadly game begins, one thing is certain.
It won't be the last murder this witness is involved in..."
I didn't realise till after I finished that there was a whole series of books based around Eddie Flynn so I am writing this review as a first time reader! So obviously this can be read as a stand alone story. Overall I enjoyed the book and got through it fairly quickly. Loved the character Mr Christmas, wouldn't want a visit from him. All the other characters around Eddie are well developed and felt realistic if a little cliche. I would recommend but I can't say how it compares to other Eddie Flynn books.
Thanks to NetGalley, publishers and author for an ARC of Witness 8.
This book is Steve Cavanagh at his finest. Reading about Eddie Flynn and his team had me on the edge of my seat, literally. This book has a tried and tested method and formula that works, the only difference being we know some of whodunit in this book. There were still surprises in every chapter though.
Highly recommend reading.
I’ve read all the Eddie Flynn books in the series and in my opinion they just get better with each book.
In his latest case, Eddie and his team are defending a man falsely accused of murdering his neighbour. As in all of Steve Cavanagh’s books we also see are told the story from the bad guys point of view, this being the “witness” Ruby who has her own agenda.
Fast paced and super exciting I highly enjoyed this latest book and definitely look forward to the next.
Witness 8 is such a fast-novel that has so many twists and turns along the way, it's near impossible to put down. We start off following Ruby who is a nanny and a cleaner to lots of families on this street where she grew up (but her family had a fall from grace), she knows lots of things that have been going on and she knows how to play things to her own advantage. One night she witnesses a murder and the novel goes from there. This is an Eddie Flynn novel so we also follow him and his team as they defend the man accused of murder but think there is more going on than they know. This novel requires suspension of disbelief but I didn't mind that as I was completely along for the ride. This was a fun read and I enjoyed it.
This was the second Eddie Flynn book I've read, and it was just as good as the first! I loved every page.
Ruby, nanny to many of the wealthy residents of West 74th Street in Manhattan, is a witness to a murder. Does she hide? Does she ring the police? Or does she do something else entirely?
This is a interwoven tale of murder, relationships, hit men, gang bosses and blackmail, and the reader will not be disappointed!
A well written, and exciting story, that will keep you on your toes.
A1
I'm a big Steve Cavanagh fan and this book did not disappoint. I really enjoy how he builds a story and incorporates the characters in a way that you're still surprised who did it and/or why!
I've recommended this book to various book clubs I'm in as a classic thriller story though the sometimes cheesy lines get a bit of getting used to 😂
This was a great story with so much going on it was impossible to put down.
Highly recommend this book.
This was my first Steve Cavanagh book and I definitely will be back for more! His writing was easy to understand despite the fact that perspectives were continually swapping. It kept me on my toes, wondering all the time where twists and turns could come in and then surprising me at unexpected moments. Was a perfect thriller for the beginning of autumn!
Oh buckle up … I’ve been waiting for this installment 8 and you did not disappoint at all !! Brilliant plot , intricate yet readable with ease ! “ There’s something wrong with Ruby “ and her grandmother was right !! Just brilliant - I’ll never not recommend your books x
What another absolutely fantastic masterpiece!
This is another Eddie Flynn book and it certainly hits like the others!
Absolutely loved mr Christmas and I shall not say more.
I have read all of Steve’s books I think he is an incredible author and look forward to reading more in the future.
Thank you so much for allowing me to read this pre release
This is an excellent murder mystery which challenges the readers ideas about who are the good guys and who are the villains.
It's an achievement for a writer to make us want to support a killer - the Witness 8 - despite her deplorable behaviour. Similarly, I found myself rather liking a hitman serial killer who I knew I really shouldn't be liking. And even the lawyer good-guy has a shady past.
It's clever. I like the way the author played with our assumptions and our loyalties.
I hadn't read this writer before but I would definitely read him again.
This is the eighth book in the Eddie Flynn series by author Steve Cavanagh. I love court drama novels and quirky characters, so this series is always going to be a winner for me. Another absorbing read by author Steve Cavanagh that made an excellent addition to the Eddie Flynn series. Eddie Flynn is a New York lawyer, having made the switch from a co artist and believes the two roles aren’t that different.
Ruby Johnson is a seemingly ordinary nanny and maid to wealthy families in Manhattan’s West 74th Street. But Ruby is not all she appears, she knows secrets of the families she works for and witnesses a brutal murder one night. Ruby makes an anonymous call to the police, naming the killer, but there’s a chilling twist: Ruby didn’t tell the truth.
Eddie Flynn, an unconventional yet brilliant trial lawyer with a dark past as a conman enters the scene. He is tasked with defending an innocent man accused of the murder Ruby witnessed. A tense legal battle follows as Eddie must unravel Ruby’s dangerous lies before there is another potential murder.
This was a fast paced novel that I thoroughly enjoyed, full of interesting characters, touches of humour and an intriguing case.
I would like to thank both Netgalley and Headline for supplying a copy of this novel in exchange for an honest review.
I’ve never read Steve Cavanagh before and this is book 8 in the Eddie Flynn series.
At times I did think this is OTT with the amount of stuff going on and wasn’t totally convinced by Ruby either but all that aside it was very enjoyable. The pace really picked up nearing the end of the book and I feel as though it was left that some characters could possibly reappear in the future.
I think that Eddie and team would make a good tv show.
Many thanks to #NetGalley and #Headline for a copy of the book in exchange for an honest review.
Steve Cavanagh books are addictive!
This 8th book in the Eddie Flynn series gave me the fix I needed......a perfect 5 out of 5 from me.
What did this witness see or should I say who, plus who is telling the truth? This will keep you hooked from the beginning as it is brilliant. What is the nanny Ruby Johnson hiding and what does she intend to do? I liked this story as it was a bit different, I can understand why Steve Cavanagh is another best-selling author. Another book I could not put down as it keeps you turning those pages all the way through to get to the next surprise or twist. Great book to keep you entertained on the beach.
Thanks to Headline and NetGalley for ARC.
Ruby used to live on West 74th Street in Manhattan. Now she works for the people who do and she is full of simmering resentment and a desire to change her life and her mother's.
When she witnesses a murder, she thinks this is her big chance to get out from under the weight of the past and start afresh. But time is running out.
Eddie Flynn is hired to defend the man accused of the murder, but time is of the essence for Eddie and his client too.
This is the eighth in a highly enjoyable series featuring Eddie Flynn who seems to style himself as former con-man turned New York defence attorney with scruples, although you'll wonder if he's a con-man with a side hustle as the owner of a law firm. It's a high concept riot from the get-go, brilliantly and breathlessly plotted, with twists so deft you won't stop to wonder what just happened or why.
Unfortunately I was unable to get to this book before it was archived it’s definitely high on my TBR list and once read I will leave my review on all relevant book sites
