This is one of the most compelling books I have read in quite a while. It is the perfect combination of a legal drama, featuring Eddie Flynn, a conman turned criminal lawyer, and a twisted psychological mystery, featuring sociopath Ruby Johnson, nanny and housekeeper to many of the wealthy families in her neighbourhood and the only witness to a brutal murder. Switching viewpoints between Ruby, Eddie and various other intriguing characters, such as the assassin, Mr Christmas, the story moves at a fast pace which keeps the reader gripped throughout. Now that I’m aware it’s part of a series, I will seek out other books by this author and add them to my to-read pile.

Thanks to NetGalley, the author and the publisher for the opportunity to read and review an advance copy.

Tension, red herrings, twisting plot, humour - this book has it all. Eddie Flynn is back in another intense and fast paced story with all the usual suspects in this series. Eddies tricks in this book are SO satisfying to read. You can’t con a conman 😏

I’ve only read 2 other books in this series but what I love is that you don’t necessarily need to read them in order - although I will be going back to read more! Steve Cavanagh has written this so well that you know you’re in for a good story with any book from this series. They ALL will keep you hooked and Witness 8 hooked me instantly from the opening court room drama scene in chapter 1.

P.S. THANKS NETGALLEY AND HEADLINE BOOKS🫶

Another book in the Eddie Flynn series. This one follows a nanny who witnesses a neighbours murder and tells the police who did it. But she has lied and an Innocent man is in jail. Enter Eddie Flynn, the lawyer who will defend the innocent man and uncover all sorts of things about ruby johnson the nanny. I devoured this book in 2 days. It was so well paced and the writing was brilliant. I love the character of Eddie Flynn and I really couldn’t work out what was going on with the nanny. Set cleverly and well thought out. Without giving away any spoilers I’d say read and see what you think.

This is the first Steve Cavanagh book I have read, and it won’t be the last. This was a complex thriller with a number of side plots that were all neatly tied up by the end. There were some great twists that I didn’t anticipate coming, and I found myself wishing I had read the previous books to better understand the characters. Overall a great crime thriller, and I will look forward to catching up with the previous Eddie Flynn books.

Wow, this had me hooked straight away. I raced through this book. I lovedvthe way thecstory unfolded and thecway it was written, it read that a 1940's crime show. My thanks to netgalley and the publishers for giving me the opportunity to read this book in return for an honest review.

I generally don't like books with unreliable narrators or ones that only reveal big secrets at the end so I appreciated that we knew a lot about the murder from the get go. I enjoyed Ruby's character, she seemed to be the most three dimensional out of them all and didn't fall into many of the tropes and clichés as the others did, and I think her ending was fitting. As for the rest, it felt all too like an American detective TV show. Bad corrupt cops, gangs, bad guy turned good who also happens to know everyone, rich white suburban families who think they are untouchable. Special mention for Mr Christmas also who seemed quite mysterious. Not the worst but not the best.

EDIT to add that I have since discovered that this is part of a series of books about Eddie Flynn and co which may explain why I thought they were not as developed as characters as Ruby and Mr Christmas were (who are new characters) so this does change my score to 3 stars and not 2.5.

Back with Eddie and the team for another complicates case, this time they are asked to defend a doctor who has been accused of murdering a neighbour in his affluent neighbourhood. But we also follow the witness to the murder, Ruby. While walking home from her babysitting job down the street, she watches what happens through the window, but instead of calling for help, she sees it is a way of righting some wrongs.

This was another excellent chapter in the Eddie Flynn story. Eddie and the team are under pressure, as ever, but this time there is an added layer in the form of some extra-shady characters who are out for Eddie's blood. Lots of action, great characters and a big dollop of tension, this was a cracker!

I went into this book thinking it wasnt in a series and found out after finishing that it is oart of series and it isnt the first book. I was slightly confused during parts which makes sense now. The storyline was written well and the characters were all very enjoyable. I would definitely go back to start this series from the beginning. I am rating it 4 stars even being confused at times.

My name is Mr Christmas. I don't want this to appear rude, but I have been planning to kill you..." Wow! What a book. I was hooked on Eddie's world and the case. Following every character's story leading to the truth and solving the case. This was the first book I've read by this author and I will definitely be looking out for more!

At first I thought this was going to be a fairly simple whodunnit.

Neighbour stabs another neighbour in the lit window then sneaks out to rejoin a party given by yet more neighbours. However it was all viewed by a baby sitter on her way home. As she used to be another neighbour in this posh street there was no doubt that she could identify the perpetrator.

So why does she anonymously finger a completely innocent man?

From that point on I was led on the most convoluted journey. Twisted? Oh yes. Jealousy in spades, murders pointless but increasing in numbers. Also assassins assassinating each other.

Witness 8 is my first Steve Cavanagh book but I don't expect it to be my last.

I have always loved reading Steve Cavanagh books and this one certainly did not disappoint. It was fast-paced and left me guessing consistently. I grew rather fond of listening to Ruby's POV and understanding the way she thinks and reacts. It was a brilliant book that I will no doubt read again - I look forward to hear what Cavanagh has to say about it at his event tomorrow. The four stars was simply because I enjoyed some of his other books more than this one!

Oh, yes! Eddie Flynn is back doing what he does best - defending seemingly impossible to defend clients, conning the conmen, and outrunning death on every avenue! A doctor is on trial for murder, a family man, with no record, who spends his days saving lives. Murder is the last thing you would expect, but there is a murder weapon, prints, and undercover witness 8 going against him. It seems to be an open and shut case. Cavanagh is the king of twists, and protagonist Eddie Flynn always manages to find a way to wrangle his clients through the impossible through novel thinking and a few tricks he has picked up along the way. Some favourites return to help him in the fight, including his friend and mentor Harry Ford, fellow atrorney Kate Brooks, his go-to investigator Bloch, and PI Gabriel Lake. The love-to-hate them villains of this piece are epic in characterisarion: Ruby Johnson; Mr Christmas and Angel chief amongst them. An absolute thrill from beginning to end. My read of the summer 2024. #witness8 #stevecavanagh #eddieflynn #headlinepublishing #netgalley

Thanks to netgalley for allowing me to review this book. Fewer things bring me joy as much as reading a new eddie flynn book, however it has been my least favorite book of the series because I felt there were too many things happening at once.

I was disappointed that this wasn’t as legal as his other books were.

Saying that I'm still looking forward to his next read.

This book was very much middle of the road, very standard as thrillers go, I wasn’t ‘delighted’ by it!

Read in one sitting as I was travelling but was actually a little disappointed as I’ve heard so many good things about this authors work but was left disappointed

As expected, another incredible addition to the Eddie Flynn series! If you’ve not read any part of this series - YOU'RE MISSING OUT!

Eddie Flynn, the conman turned trial lawyer returns to defend an innocent man accused of murder. However, the key witness is playing her own deadly game. With twist after twist, you won’t want to put this book down - I was on the edge of my seat constantly needing to know what was going to happen next.

The perfect balance of fun and thrilling with an ending you’d never predict! This might just be my new favourite Eddie Flynn novel (but then again… I say this every time Steve has a new release)

Steve Cavanagh knocks it out of the park once again with this new installment to the Eddie Flynn series.
Ruby is a nanny and maid to the wealthy families of West 74th street in Manhattan. She knows everyone's secrets and their routines and has access to their homes, often going unnoticed. When she witnesses someone on the street being murdered by one of their neighbours she decides to call the police.
Ruby doesn't tell the truth though because she has her own agenda and issues!

Eddie Flynn, conman turned defense lawyer and his rag tag assortment of staff and associates are on the case. As they delve deeper into the case, defending an innocent man on trial for murder seems to be the least of their worries.

As always Steve does a fabulous job of taking us on a roller coaster ride of a journey with a Eddie & Co and makes the book absolutely unputdownable. Right up the the end your heart is in your mouth as you read.

While this is book 8 in the Eddie Flynn series it could be enjoyed as a standalone but to truly appreciate the found family aspects of the series and nods to former cases I would 100% recommend reading them all.

Many thanks to the publisher Headline and Netgalley for providing a free digital copy of this book in exchange for my honest review.

Eddie flynn is easily one of my favourite characters ever created so I couldnt wait to get stuck in and as per usual, I was far from disappointed! Amazing writing, jaw dropping twists and it all just feels so believable! These aren't your average situations but they're brought to life in such a way that they feel real and I was on the edge of my seat throughout! A really good plot that was timed out perfectly and I'd happily class this series as a must read for any thriller fan! Even if you haven't read the series, this could be read as a standalone but I guarantee once you get into this world, you'll be working your way through the entire series the second you finish

This is the first book that I have readd by Steve Cavanagh...........what have I been missing ? what an inspired idea turning a con artist, who know all the tricks of the trade, into a lawyer who isn't afraid to use them.
"Something is wrong with Ruby Johnson", this has been said often, Ruby Johnson had once lived with her wealthy parents on West 74th Street, Manhattan, until her father gambled away all their money and then left Ruby and her mother alone, Ruby was now nanny/housekeeper to the people who were once her equals but now looked down their noses at her. Ruby is a complex character, she is devious, unhinged but intelligent and will do anything to keep her sick mother safe, Ruby saw her chance and she took it.
Witnessing a murder, Ruby planned to get innocent brain surgeon, John Jackson, accused of the shooting of Margaret Blakemore but little did she know that she would be crossing swords with lawyer Eddie Flynn or Edddie Fly as he was known to the undesirables in the area.
Eddie has to pull out all the stops in this one, he is up against corrupt police officers, a DA who is out to improve his election chances and conclusive evidence that all point to John Johnson.
I really enjoyed this roller coaster story, I love the complex characters, I loved the complex plot with it's twists and turns, I love how Eddie uses all his recourses to get the answers that he wants. this book had me reading long into the night, it has nail biting suspense, it made me laugh and it left me wanting to read more of Steve Cavanagh.
Thank you Net Gallery for this ARC, my review is totally voluntary.

If there's one series of books that I just can't get enough of it's Steve Cavanagh's Eddie Flynn series. The twists, turns, and just general entertainment levels are possibly my favourite in the genre. Witness 8 lives up to these high standards. Once again we join Flynn and his team trying to help the wrongly accused, while juggling the bullseye that Eddie seems to wear on his back. A great addition to the series, I thoroughly enjoyed it.

Witness 8 is the latest Eddie Flynn novel from Steve Cavanagh. A woman in an exclusive New York neighbourhood has been murdered, and there is a witness. However, when the time comes, she identifies the wrong man as the killer. Who is she, and why would she do this?

This is the premise of the story, and is typical of a Steve Cavanagh novel, it is not a straight road to get to the answer!

I will be honest that I am a huge fan of Steve Cavanagh, and have read all of his books so far. I think Eddie Flynn is a great character, and his background makes it easy for the books to straddle two worlds - law and the criminal underworld.

I was lucky enough to attend a book launch by Steve Cavanagh for this book, and it was great! He is engaging with plenty of great stories to tell. He said that he starts each book with a simple premise and builds the story from there, and for this book, the premise was - imagine there was a witness to a murder, who chooses to implicate the wrong person.

I really enjoyed this story - the characters are interesting and layered, with enough grey elements to keep them interesting. Few of the characters are black and white - even Mr Christmas! I feel that the world is also quite fair - no one is immune to danger, which increases the level of suspense in the book. The premise is interesting and lays the groundwork for a really interesting story, with lots of different plot threads being pulled together throughout the story.

This could easily be read as a standalone, but I would absolutely recommend going back and reading all of the Steve Cavanagh books that are available - he is a deft writer that can bring multiple story threads together with skill and style, and always draws his tales to a satisfactory conclusion, even when there are points where it doesn’t appear possible for that to happen.

It has been enjoyable watching this series develop over time, and I am already anticipating the next instalment.

I received this book from Netgalley in exchange for an honest review.
