Though the focus of this book is on the 1984 Boston Celtics and, in particular, on star Larry Bird, I loved how the author put the times and the NBA into historical perspective with this well-written, informative book.
As just a casual NBA fan, I found this book to be fascinating. This is a book I'd recommend to serious basketball fans and even to more casual fans, such as me. Very enjoyable.
Thomas J. Whalen's Dynasty Restored: How Larry Bird and the 1984 Boston Celtics Conquered the NBA and Changed Basketball is a fascinating look at the 1984 team, their opponents and 1984 culture that they existed in. Whalen did an amazing job of delving deep into all of our "characters" and their biographies. At the height of my basketball fandom, most of the players found here were in the twilights of their careers and it was incredibly cool to read about them in their prime. I will definitely be checking out more of the author's sports books in the future.
Special Thanks to Rowman & Littlefield and Netgalley for the digital ARC. This was given to me for an honest review.
Incredibly well-written, with Lazenby levels of storytelling and research. I love the way he introduces the “characters” with quick features about their background and their role in the story of the ‘84 Celtics. My only gripe is that the ending felt rushed after the lead-up felt so carefully crafted. Still an awesome book for NBA fans, including those who aren’t Celtics fans.
