A good read, the twists kept on coming in a gentle way. The book managed to lead me to expect one conclusion by laying breadcrumbs and then the last few chapters were unexpected. The twists that I thought would happen then didn’t! A book to keep me guessing. The lead police officer was very much a product of the seventies, a generation where the wife should be at home cooking and insults were considered banter in the police force. A few comments crossed the line for me and made Angel unattractive as a hero, not a single woman was anything but eye candy or there to cook, type or clean. A good plot but the sexism got to me.
The audio book was very well read, the accepts and change in gender came across fluidly and it was easy to listen to.
Inspector Angel is a good, old fashioned, down to earth Yorkshire copper but he’s nobody’s fool.. He managed to solve crimes with a rapidity that totally surprised me! The narrator did a fantastic job with so many different characters and accents. A great listen.
I’m all for realistic characters, which includes the unfortunate fact that there are sexist unlikable people, but the main character had no redeemable characteristics. None. The story didn’t grab me or keep my attention. At only 6ish hours of audio this took me a long time to trudge through. When I would take a break from the book I felt no pull or interest in picking back up again. Good thing they are fictional, otherwise I’d feel guilty about not caring about the missing or dead characters.
Thank you NetGalley and Bolinda Audio for this audio ARC.

Wow! Thanks NetGalley for this ARC/audiobook. How had I missed this series with Yorkshire detective Angel?? Great work, superb narration - I.m going in search of the rest of this series and other books by Roger Silverwwod to boot!
The backstory of The Missing Nurse was very interesting, but the investigation seemed to drag on and on. I finished this book feeling like I missed something, I was waiting for a twist that never came. Overall it was suspenseful but a bit disappointing.
Thank you to the publisher and Net Galley for the ALC in exchange for my honest review.
*Many thanks to Roger Silverwood, Bolinda Audion, and NetGalley for a free audiobook in exchange for my honest review.*
This story was not particularly captivating or charming in the way I wanted it to be. It begins as an old case, set in Wales, and continues around twenty years later. Somehow the characters left be indifferent, and I even did not warm up to the main character who feels helpless after his wife goes away for a short period of time. True, the ending was unexpected, however, there was no real thrill in it. The subtitle suggest a mystery in Yorkshire, but most of the background is Welsh, which may be a little misleading. Good narration by Mr Gareth Armstrong certainly is an upside to this audiobook.

The blurb states Detective Inspector Michael Angel is no angel.
At first I found Inspector Angel unlikeable, his motley crew of assistants were comical compared to Angel’s disposition.
Angel’s wife is out of town caring for her mother. Angel is not happy about this however, he doesn’t seem to like a lot of things. She calls a couple times to remind him to fee the cats and buy milk.
Hmmm this did surprise me as I have always had a cat sometimes two but cats and milk is a myth.
True cats like cream but milk from the store now days has little cream so best not to give milk to cats as it is very difficult for cats to digest.
Okay back to the story-
Miriam Thomas came into the station to report that her sister Fiona was missing,
At first Inspector Michael Angel couldn’t see any connection of this and the murder of a nurse in an insane asylum twenty years ago.
My curiosity got the best of me and as I continued to listen I gained some respect for Inspector Angel.
Additionally I liked young Cadet Ahmed Ahaz, as his efforts trying his best to help.
Have to admit I am looking forward to " The Missing Wife" - next in this series.

There is a good mystery at the heart of this novel and it's a solid introduction to a series. Angel is not a particularly likeable character, coming across as a dinosaur, but he does know how to solve a crime. It's worth noting that this book was originally published in 2004 and some language hasn't aged well.
Yorkshire, local-law-enforcement, procedural, British-detective, murders, 2004, 1981, sisters, due-diligence, friendship, suspense, teamwork, secrets, sly-humor, situational-humor, snarky, surprises*****
A death at the Moorside Hospital for the Criminally Insane in 1981 and a missing nurse in the present (2004).
DI Michael Angel seems irascible and anomalous as a husband (satirical) but spot on as a police detective who knows his stuff and is subtly mentoring DS Crisp and Cadet Ahmed Ahaz. The investigation is very well done and the characters certainly are. Now I need to get the rest of the series and BINGE.
Voice actor Gareth Armstrong has a marvelously accented tongue-in-cheek delivery that really adds to the satire that is DI Michael Angel.
I requested and received a free temporary audio advance copy from Bolinda via NetGalley. Thank you!
Such a wonderful and new read. The author has created an incredible new series that will be sought after. The reader did a fantastic job of all the characters. It’s also a quick read if one is looking for one. Well worth getting and reading.
Rounding up to three stars
Just an OK from me I'm afraid.
I didnt particularly enjoy the main character, and sometimes it felt a bit long.
Obviously there were lots of times I did enjoy it, but I won't be reaching for book 2.
This was a good mystery book. I enjoyed the narration. The story was entertaining from the very beginning to the very end. A good book
