Sophie, a successful local weather woman, seemingly has it all, until her daughter gets kicked out of school and they have to hire a live-in tutor. There is definitely some suspense in this book, but it really should have been titled “Gaslighting Sophie.” Women are treated kind of like hysterical beings that exist for the male gaze. The 12YO daughter is obnoxious and acts more like she is 17. I felt like there were too many characters in on the “twist” and it would have been nice to read the characters in different locations rather than just within 2 rooms in the same home. It definitely had a very unique ending.
Thank you NetGalley for the opportunity to read this family drama thriller.
This is my first book by J.M.Dalgliesh and I really liked it. The main character, Sophie, is a strong female character, a characteristic I like in a book. The book is well written, easy to follow and full of unsuspecting twists. If you think you have it figured out you probably don't.
Sophie has the perfect life. Handsome, successful husband, two great kids, a great career and beautiful home. Things start to fall apart when daughter Katie gets into trouble at school and gets expelled. Desperate to help Katie, they hire Deanna as a tutor. Young, beautiful and fun Sophie's family is immediately taken in by her but Sophie is suspicious and vows to find out what she's up to. For the first time Sophie is in fear of losing all she worked so hard to achieve. She will not let that happen and sets out to find out what Deanna is hiding and just what she's after.
Full of secrets, lies and twists this book had me held captive. A perfect domestic thriller for thriller lovers.

Sophie is a driven, career-minded woman who hosts a morning talk show. Her schedule make sit difficult for her to feel like a good wife and mother, and when her daughter Katie acts out and gets suspended from school within the first week of the school year, she isn't sure what to do. No other school will take her with a suspension on her record, so Sophie's husband Scott suggests an at-home tutor, which they find in Deanna.
Sophie is of course self-conscious around Deanna, who is beautiful and charismatic; worst of all, Katie seems to adore her. When Scott offers the couple's basement apartment to Deanna without consulting Sophie first, the action really picked up. Soon after, Sophie's life starts to fall apart. She is having gaps in her memory, she is suffering from nightmares, and she's afraid her job is suffering because of it. She also catches glimpses of Deanna getting a little too close to her family for her liking and is forced to wonder why this woman is in their lives.
Full of gaslighting, tension, and people behaving badly. Thank you to NetGalley and Bookouture for the early read. At the time this review was written, this title was set to publish on August 8, 2024.
This is the first time I’ve read this author and I’ll definitely be checking out others! Wow! This had me on the edge of my seat almost the entire time! I kept trying to piece together what was going on but I didn’t see the plot twist coming at all. Loved it!
I had a hard time getting into this book. It was interesting enough that I wanted to finish and find out how it ended, but it didn't grip me the way I had hoped it would. I did think the ending was pretty good, so that made it a little better. I'm sure there will be other readers that get into it more than I did, but it just wasn't my favorite.
This was my first book by J M Dalgliesh. I was very impressed! The writing style, and the length of the chapters gripped me. You really wanted to continue reading to find out what happened.
It was such a good story and I loved the twist. It really put you on the edge of your seat wanting to find out more!
Thank you Netgalley for this ARC, I am leaving this review honestly and willingly!
Homewrecker by J.M. Dagliesh
Publication date 8/8
Sophie and Scott are successful in their professional lives. But, home is a mess.
Katie has been expelled from school, and Scott has hired the beautiful young Deanna as a tutor. From the start Sophie gets a bad feeling about her. But, Scott, their son Chas and Katie adore Deanna.
Then Deanna moves in to their basement apartment, and Sophie know not to trust her.
Ah, this was so good. The beginning was a little hard because there was so much gaslighting of Sophie. But, stick with it – I really enjoyed it after the first half.

Thank you @bookouture for approving my Net Galley request.
This book really blew me away. Enough twists and turns t9 keep you very entertained. I was up all night just to finish this in one sitting. Thanks to Netgalley and Bookouture.
This thriller started off a little slower than I was expecting however it was still very fascinating. I loved the characters and the end of every chapter had me holding my breath for each cliff hanging moment. I really liked how the characters were easy to sympathise with and you really felt pulled into their world from the get go. The book starts out with our main character Sophie being desperately worried about her daughter Kate after she gets expelled from her school. Since Kate is going down a wrong path and won't listen to Sophie she decides that the only way to get her the education she desperately needs is by the help of a tutor, enter Deanna. The whole family is taken immediately by Deanna's charm however something doesn't seem quite right to Sophie and she is determined to get to the bottom of it, despite her husband's lack of concern. The more that Deanna is around the more that the family becomes attached to her however Sophie knows that something isn't right and when Deanna starts asking questions about Scott's past Sophie knows that the battle is just beginning , but Sophie didn't get to where she is easily and she isn't about to let it all go without a fight. I loved our main character she was so strong and I love how she knew she had a fight on her hands even when everyone was fooled by Deanna's demeanor. This book was the epitome of strong female characters and I loved that. There were so many twists and turns in this book that it almost gave me whiplash, but I loved trying to figure everything out. Very good read and I'm so glad I got the chance to check it out. One of the things I liked the most was how this book was told through Sophie's point of view, because it gave the reader a much cleaner view of how sinister Deanna was acting and how her actions were being perceived. While I loved all of the characters I loved Sophie's the most because she seemed so level headed through the whole thing but I also loved how conniving and manipulative that Deanna's character was. The contrast between the two was wonderful. Thank you everyone involved for allowing me to preview this book it was a roller coaster for sure. This is the kind of book the thriller genre was made for. The ending was fantastic and I couldn't get through this book fast enough. Be prepared for a shock of a lifetime and after and ending like that it made me want to reread the book with a new understanding of things.
A first time read for this author from me and was attracted by the blurb….
I love a cuckoo, someone who enters a family intent on disruption…..it matters not how loud we shout at the unsuspecting victims we know they are about to be fooled and chaos reign……one of my favourite genres within a genre and I generally can’t wait for that moment they are caught and normality returns…
I expected this to be that…..and it is, until it isen’t, to say more and try to be subtle wouldn’t work other than to say it is very cleaver, scarily clever and shocks come a plenty and then some
Well written and good strong characters, some more likeable than others with the added bonus of a byline of Television presenting and the sexist way women of a certain age are treated
Very different to what I had imagined and very good in its uniqueness of story
Wasn't sure about this to start with it felt like something i might have read before.
Am so glad i continued as it made for a thrilling read.
Its one of those where i thought i knew what was going on but i really didn't.
The ending blew my mind!
My thanks to Netgalley and the publisher for my copy.
This book had me hooked from page 1 and I finished it in 3 days. The book was well written from the view of the characters. You felt the emotions of the family in the story and you just couldn't figure out what the next step was going to be. For a bit I thought .. this is predictable but then the plot takes quite a few turns. Excellent book that keeps you wanting to read just one more. Hapter. Highly recommend!
I'm not sure how I feel about this book. It started out slow, but I read it word for word. By 40% I was bored as this is an overdone plot. I skipped ahead here and there and then it did get better. The ending was very violent and not what I expected. Overall, the book was good; the writing was good; just overdone plot maybe with a slow beginning.
Great book I really can't say enough. Don't start this book if you have anything else to do. Full of twists and turns and a surprise ending. Looking forward to the next by this author.
First time author for me but a thoroughly good read with a well written storyline which flowed well with good characters.
Plenty of twists as to who the culprit was and an unpredictable ending.
Thank you to Netgalley and Bookouture for this ARC which I can recommend.
Sophie is finding it difficult to cope with her daughter, Katie, who is acting out and getting suspended from school. Her husband Scott employs a tutor, Deanna, and Sophie feels that Deanna is not to be trusted.
This is the first book I have read by this author. I hope to read more.
The plot of the book was good. I was suspicious of a certain character, and in the end, my suspicions were right. But the twist was fantastic.
I can recommend.
Thanks to Netgalley and Bookouture for the opportunity to read this book.
This was my first time reading a book by this author. They had me interested from the very first page. Love the easy flow style of writing.
Character building was sufficient. The storyline was refreshening and different yet so intriguing and thrilling. Loved the multiple twists and turns and loved the ending. Highly recommend.
This was the first book I read by J M Dalgliesh and it was for sure a page turner!
I instantly found myself hooked and believing the main character Sophie as it feels like everyone in her life is driving her off the edge.
I was confused as to how the book was going to end and it made sense but I did not end the book pleased. It honestly felt like the whole ending was forced and it did not fit the characters I had grown to know.
This was the first book I've read by this author. We meet Sophie, a TV presenter who lives a very nice life with her husband Scott and their two children. When Sophie's daughter Katie gets herself expelled from school, they arrange for Deanna to home tutor her. Deanna seems perfect, but is she beginning to make herself a little too comfortable in Sophie's family home?
This was a great read, which was full of twists and turns throughout. Sophie was a likeable character and one which was easily to relate to. She seemed to have the perfect life with a successful career, lovely husband and an amazing house, but her daughter Katie is causing trouble with her behaviour. When Deanna turned up to be Katie's home tutor I could hear the alarm bells ringing straight away as something about Deanna just didn't seem right. I really felt for Sophie throughout the book and I know if that if I was in her shoes, I'd feel exactly the same as she did. As Sophie's story moved on I have to admit I didn't really guess where it was heading, but found myself gripped into the plot waiting for everything to be revealed.
There was lots of suspense throughout and the tension of what was happening to Sophie was well written. The twists in the storyline were unexpected and I certainly didn't see them coming. The author has done an excellent job of keeping the mystery well hidden and it kept me turning the pages furiously so I could find out just what was going on! I will definitely be reading more books by this author!! Would recommend!!
This is the first book I’ve read by this author, and it certainly won’t be the last.
Sophie appears to have the perfect life – handsome and loving husband, Scott, two lovely children, a gorgeous London townhouse, and a television career. Then her daughter, Katie, starts seriously misbehaving at her private school and is eventually expelled. Whilst trying desperately to get her into another school, they employed a one-to-one tutor, Deanna and she seems to get on very well with Katie.
Then Sophie’s life starts to fall apart. She does things that she can’t remember doing, feels unwell, and has nightmares. She also catches Deanna getting close to Scott and is immediately suspicious of this stranger who is worming her way into their lives. Sophie even starts to wonder if she’s safe in her own home.
A brilliant plot with plenty of twists and turns, I was totally gripped and didn’t expect the ending at all.
Thank you to NetGalley and Bookouture for an advance reader copy in return for an honest review.
