This is a humorous and thought provoking novel set in 2000 and the present day. Ella and Lowe meet as teenagers and although Ella soon realises he is the love of her left, they remain firm friends. The book follows this friendship along with the tumultuous teenage years and discovery of adulthood until Ella must decide how to proceed with this important relationship.
This novel would appeal to young adults along with the older audience it is aimed at. It is fun and witty but some of the humour felt like an in joke at times.
Whilst the content of this book I feel I would really enjoy I found it difficult to listen to the audiobook as it felt like a constant stream of consciousness with little pauses in between words/sentences let alone paragraphs. I therefore found it difficult to gage what was happening and when we were switching between the present and past. I will look to read this but the audiobook was definitely not for me.
5⭐️ all the way...!!!
I absolutely loved this audiobook it was such a pleasure to listen to well narrated by the author herself which I few authors do however with this type of genre in particular and the way in which this was written it worked extremely well. I felt like I was listening to a journal of an old school friend, and so many things took me back to my own childhood and teenage years.
Ella who as many of us did as teens had a strange nickname Elbow, she was a typical teen who was keen to grow up envisaging love, marriage, children and how life could be all while having anxieties going through the process of actually maturing and finding out who she really is underneath societies expectations.
The main theme of the story is of course the boy she fell in love with when she was just a teenager, the pang of that first love that never quite left even though there may have been times when they drifted in and out of one another's lives he was always there in her heart and soul and very deeply in her mind no matter what she done in life or how far he roamed.
Lowe was her best friend, her confidant, they went through so much together from speaking on the phone having a parent pick up another phone in another room to tell Ella get off the phone so it could be used to ringtops off cans, discmans, bmx bikes, so much nostalgia had me going right back to my youth an absolute joy.
It takes you through their college years where they both find themselves on different paths, with Ella having her first proper boyfriend, Niall and Lowe, getting together with Heather. University days and Lowe being in a famous band One Love to them becoming adults when Ella is then living with Jackson whilst still remaining in contact in one way or another, the universe always brings them back to each other.
Then, at 32, 18 years later, both Lowe and Ella are single. What will happen next for them will destiny be fulfilled, or does the universe have other plans for them.
When Ella is back living at her mums she realises this is when she truly begins to dig deep within and find herself at a level she never had before and a direct quote that stood out emphasised this point is this...
"My aching teenage self haunted me from the corners of my bedroom until I invited her to lie in the bed with me where I held her tight kissed her head and lullabyed her to sleep."
So much pleasure in this story with all it entails will Ella and Lowe ever get together or not but more than that was the way in which it was written like a journal of events it really makes the listener feel like they are on the journey alongside these characters. I was invested from the very beginning till the end, this is THEIR LOVE STORY. An absolute must listen for anyone who has the slightest romantic side to them or even to enjoy the nostalgia, humour, and everyday lives many of us have lived or are living.
With thanks to Netgalley & Harper Collins UK Audio for the opportunity to listen to this ARC in return for an honest review.
I started listening to this via audiobook and the narrator was reading a million miles a minute and I just thought “wow” 🤣. But then the more I listened it started to make sense. As it was portraying the main character anxiety and internal monologue. For something who suffers from anxiety and over thinks everything found this completely relatable and I love her. It gave me Bridget Jones vibes, but including the younger years. It flitted between her younger years and the present day leading up to how she’d reached that point. Honestly I loved every minute of it, usually I only listen to audiobooks while I’m cleaning or walking, but I just wanted to keep going back to this one! Amazing!
I loved it. I loved it, I loved it.
I love you x3, is such a relatable tale of love and loss in the early 2000s, with a focus on the mental health issues that so many people face.
I enjoyed the move from the present to the past as the story covered a 17 year period.
Well worth a read
A powerful and moving memoir that offers a deep dive into the complexities of postpartum psychosis. Laura Dockrill's courage in sharing her story is commendable, and her literary talent makes the book a compelling read. It is a significant contribution to discussions about maternal mental health and is likely to resonate with many readers, particularly those who have faced similar struggles or are seeking to understand more about this condition. However, its intensity and the potential structural challenges mean it may not be for everyone.
Absolutely brings me back to adolescence in the 2000s. This is a really sweet book effectively showing what it's like to fall in love for the first time

Firstly, thank you to NetGalley for providing me with a copy of the audiobook for this amazing adult debut. I LOVED the fact that Laura did the audio for this because her accent made it so much more relatable.
It follows the story of Ella and Lowe from when they first met as teenagers, up to their 30s. Being 30 meant all of the references from that pre teen angst in the same time frame made me actually laugh out loud in moments. It was honestly the most relatable book I’ve read in a while because it felt so personal as if I’d went to school with Ella and grown up alongside her.
If you’re a fan of ‘One Day’ or ‘The Idea of You’, you will LOVE this book and I really recommend you go pick it up!
Mini spoiler;
Ella and Lowe… I have not rooted for a couple this much in a while. As sad as I was about the lead up to it, they had the ending that was deserved.
Please note a review has also been submitted on Amazon but it takes several days to process.
A lovely romance that spans 17 years. Ella and Lowe are magical. They meet as young adults, but there's a lot of growing up to do and the heartache that comes with it. Poignant, at times sad, at time is frustrating this book is an emotional roller coaster.
Two things I did not like, not having Lowes pov at all and the narrator tucked. She was like an automatic gun, sharp, staccato like reading. I almost decided not to listen, but the other reviews had me gritting my teeth to listen to the end.
I Love You I Love You I Love You

Thanks to @netgalley and the publisher HarperCollins UK Audio for granting me the audiobook of #Iloveyouiloveyouiloveyou in exchange for my honest review 💛.
Our story shift from present to past narrating how Elle and Lowe have met during the summer of 2000 when they were still teenagers then becoming friends and Elle falling in love with him without having the courage to tell him coz it easier not to risk het heart getting broken 💔 🤕.
However, over the span of 15 years of friendship Elle is finding it hard to hide how she feels while seeing Lowe with other girls.
Will she overcome her fears and confess her feelings??
I haven't listened to an audiobook in a while and I thought it would be a change for me, but honestly this one didn't hit the mark.
Although the narrator is the writer herself I found it hard to get absorbed by her narration and the story itself didn't attract me that much.
However, if you love slow burn romance/friends to lovers and 2000s energy you might want to give this book a shot.
Xoxo💋
As a 90s baby this book was right up my alley. This book was full of nostalgia and I think that’s what I enjoyed most about it. It had me laughing out loud on multiple occasions and the comedy side is definitely what landed for me. I wasn’t wholly invested in Ella and Lowe towards the middle of the book but their ending was sweet and seemed very fitting for the both of them.
I love the nostalgic throwbacks throughout this book, even if in the beginning it did feel a little like I was being bombarded with them as if a list of every single thing from the noughties was on a list and trying to be crammed in! But it did bring back some really fond memories of my childhood, reminded me of so many things I had forgotten and I really enjoyed the story. Invested from the beginning in the will they won't they between Ella and Lowe and the perfect ending for this hopeless romantic! Gives hope to those who find themselves on the wrong side of unrequited love and a nostalgic treat too!
Laura Dockrill does a super job narrating her book. It’s well paced and she brings Ella to life brilliantly.
At first I wasn’t sure I was going to enjoy the story, I wasn’t sure I was the right audience, but a few chapters in and I was totally hooked! Whatever your age, you can relate to Ella’s first love, her teenage angst, that fumbling around with how you really feel and not managing to say it to the one person you love and somehow know is your destiny. I loved the throwbacks to the early 2000s too. My daughters will adore this book. A really great story!
Thanks to NetGalley and the publisher, HQ for an arc in exchange for a review.
This book is narrated by the author, which I found an interesting concept and boy, does she speak at a fast rate!
Told from a dual timeline, the teenage years and twenties to thirties years, the reader is taken on a journey alongside Ella, navigating teenage years with all the problems that young people face, school, friendships, fitting in, self worth, discovering drink and boys. It is a fun, quirky, nostalgic look and evoked some ‘eurgh’ uncomfortable memories and reminders of awkward moments.
Basically this is a story of Ella & Lowe in the friendship zone, never quite sure of how each other feels.
For me, personally, I found it a bit too long and also quite frustrating. I wasn’t invested enough in the characters to really care how it turned out. I think I am the wrong age bracket for this book to fully appeal and also in a minority with my views. It does reflect the inner turmoil of a young girl perfectly, just not really for me.
3.5⭐️
‘30 is the biggest disappointment since sea monkeys’ - couldn’t be more relatable!
I really enjoyed the nostalgia at the beginning of this book, for probably the first 25% and then I really enjoyed the last 20% too. However the middle bit was dry and just felt like reading a teenage girls diary going on and on about the same boy.
Thank you Netgalley for an arc in exchange for an honest review.
5 star read I loved everything couldn’t put it down what I loved it was cute and it’s about a consuming of someone you loved for a long time I could relate to most things in real life it’s just a incredible read thank you HarperCollins and net gallery for the audio
I throughly enjoyed listening to the author Laura Dockrill read her book I Love You, I Love You, I Love You.
The story has two time-lines, Ella and Lowe as teenagers navigating their teenage years and feelings for one another. They are best-friends and love each other. But teenagers But is it a romantic or platonic love. The present thread sees Ella navigating her grown-up relationship.
I loved listening to this book. It felt like I was reliving my teenage years and experiences with teenage Ella and Lowe. I loved the references to mix tapes and places in South London. I defy anyone listening to the book not to be charmed by the Ella and Lowe romance and root for them.
I also related to Ella’s present situation and navigating the complexities of adult friendships and relationships.
I look forward to reading future books by Laura Dockrill in the future.
Thanks to NetGalley and the publishers, HarperCollins UK Audio, for making the e-audio-ARC available to me in exchange for a fair and honest and review.
**Listened to the audiobook**
I heard the author, Laura Dockrill, taking about her book on an Instagram post and immediately felt this book would be right up my street.... and I was soooo right!
I loved this!!
I was with the characters the whole time. I felt for them, and really wanted them to be OK. Dockrill writes such believable characters that you really care about! There's no waffling, no padding, every word matters!!
In that Instagram post, Laura Dockrill states that this book was inspired by her own life - maybe that's why the characters felt so believable. It's super romantic, but never feels over the top or unrealistic.
Fans of 'Normal People' and the book 'Tomorrow, tomorrow and tomorrow' would LOVE this!!
I definitely will be giving this book another listen.
Laura Dockrill's I Love You, I Love You, I Love You is a story filled with nostalgia and melodramatic longings of love. Seriously--to some the overloaded references of British teen culture in the early noughts will be wearisome, and to others there'll be countless moments of relatability. The book wouldn't be the same without this direction, it makes it for what it is. The references are all classic things you've heard time and time again. (Again, relatable? Or is it the humour typical of the millennial copy and pasted? You decide!}
Laura Dockrill narrates the audiobook, and I often prefer the author to not narrate, but Laura Dockrill does fine considering the story focuses a lot on the inner monologue. Her performance doesn't let the story down at all and is a perfectly okay way of hearing the story.
I do think the plot needs a lil editing. I get what Dockrill's aim was, but I think the chemistry between Lowe and Ella stilts when we see Lowe as not really a character. I would've loved growth for him (after all, what else was him becoming famous for?) And how this would've changed their relationship. Lowe pretty much stays the same character he was as a teenager, and even then he doesn't feel fully formed. Ella also, in her thirties, hasn't really got as much character to work with as her younger self had.
Other than that, those who find the premise of the book interesting will be fulfilled with its direction. The target audience will love it.
Firstly I would like to thank Laura Dockrill , HarperCollins UK Audio | HQ , and NetGalley for providing me with an audio copy of ' I love you, I love you, I love you ' to listen to in exchange for an unbiased review.
The book follows the lives of Ella and Lowe who met as teenagers and remained friends through the up's and downs of their lives. Whilst it was love at first sight for Ella it is true that the course of true love doesn't always run smoothly.
The book is narrated by the author and I always love when the writer narrates their own books and reads them in the intended way it was written. Her accent is mesmerising and the words just roll off her tongue - almost poetic and lyrical. It is a very lively narration and whilst it took a little time to adjust to at first , by the second or third chapter I was completely engrossed.
The story is nostalgic , bittersweet and incapsulates all the pent up emotions of growing up in the 2000s . It is relatable and realistic and conjures up memories of first love / first crushes and the intensity which come along with it . Ella's character was 14 in the year 2000 and I was 16 so I lived through this era and could relate to a lot of what was written . Memories were unlocked with mentions of hair mascara and floor length wide jeans. The descriptions of the time , the music and way of life brought upon feelings of sentimentality. The awkwardness , embarrassment and rawness within the pages was so authentic and raw and lead me to believe that the author was truly writing from past experience.
You never get over your first love and they hold a very special place in your heart. I am sure there are not many that can deny that they haven't thought about messaging that person later in life whilst still holding a torch as they played such a significant part in your growth.
The story is told in both the past and present flipping between timelines from the main characters perspective and was a pleasing trip down memory lane. It is very reminiscent of David Nicholl's one day which is one of my favourite novels of all time. It is humorous , contemporary , wordy and powerful and would make an amazing film or tv adaption. I recommend it to all readers who love slow burn novels that explore friendship to lovers relationships and accounts about the one that got away.
