What a book! A sprawling saga telling the story of life in Britain during the buildup to WW2. Covering all the major historic moments as witnessed by the characters in the book, this was a great story and even better, is one of a succession of stories about these families. This is the first book I have read by this author and I will certainly read more! I thoroughly enjoyed following the lives of the very relatable characters and am keen to read more about their lives in the predecessor to this novel. A great read!
The Moorland dynasty has survived the Wars of the Roses and everything in between until the reign of Edward viii and the prelude to the Second World War.
I bought and read the first 15 books in the series, this one is number 36, but family life took over and reading, concentrating and enjoying these tomes always seemed to take second place to family and then work. However, now semi retired I have returned to the series and intend to fill in the gap.
It was very easy to fall back into the Moorland family and the modern history timeline it was set in.. It did take a while to read, these are hefty tomes, but the time and effort were well rewarded with an excellent storyline and memorable characters.
I still think the first book is my favourite, but I am looking forward to catching up on books 16 to 35….." it may take a while though!
