I received a complimentary copy of this book. Opinions expressed in this review are completely my own. (via Netgalley)

This was an easy read but I feel there wasn't a ton of world or character building. I think if you want to dip your toes into fantasy without being overwhelmed by those things that it may be a good fit for you.

Jessica Thorne, how could you end the book right there?! I have so many questions!!
When I tell you this is a book you need to be awake for, I mean brew yourself a cup of coffee, because you're going to need it for the web of clues in this book. Then, when you've finished, let's chat, because I need to iron out some theories!!

Overview:
20 years ago, Elodie laid claim and settled into a tiny village smack dab in the middle of nowhere with her ward Wren. During their time in Thirbridge, they've grown to be the community's hedge witch and apprentice. It's in the midst of a supply run, Wren finds herself plucking a traveler, Finn, from the grasp of the 'darkwood', a place only locals would know to avoid. As if barely evading the clutches of the shadow kin wasn't enough action for one evening... Hearing the onslaught of Ilthnian Soldiers, Finn pulls Wren to the back of his horse, fleeing from what would become the invasion of her home village. Once the ash settles Wren and Finn make their way out of hiding and back to the tower that Wren called home and where she last saw Elodie, in search of clues as to whether Elodie survived the ransacking and, if so, where she could have gone.

I received this book as an ARC. I think that the premise of the book had promise. However, the story was convoluted and confusing at times. While the characters were interesting, they lacked depth. It might have just been me, but I found myself questioning things. It seemed like things were kept deceptively confusing and broad to draw out the storyline. The last quarter of the book was very fast-paced, but the ending was so abrupt that I turned several pages to make sure I wasn’t missing anything. I will read book 2 when released to see what happens in the story.

The Lost Queen Book 1
Rating: 4/5
Release Date: 5 September 2024

In a world divided by ancient conflict, Wren harbours a dangerous secret: the ability to wield shadow magic, a power that once devastated her homeland of Asteroth. Forced to conceal her gifts, she uses them discreetly to aid her remote village, knowing discovery means certain death.

Finn, a noble knight of Asteroth, has dedicated his life to hunting shadow magic users. Driven by a desire for revenge against his cruel father, the ruler of enemy kingdom Ilanthus, Finn serves as a spy in his father's court. His mission brings him to Wren's village, where fate intervenes.

When Finn is attacked by forest creatures, Wren risks everything to save him with her magic. Their touch ignites an unexpected passion and a magical connection. However, as the effects fade, mutual suspicion resurfaces, complicated by their new bond.

With enemy forces approaching and dark days looming for Asteroth, Wren and Finn must navigate their conflicting loyalties and growing attraction. Can they learn to trust each other and use their connection to save their kingdom, or will their differences lead to its downfall?

"A Touch of Shadows" is an enthralling fantasy romance that masterfully blends magic, political intrigue, and passionate romance. As the first instalment in a new series, it sets a high bar with its immersive world-building, complex characters, and gripping plot.

The author excels in creating a rich, detailed universe with a compelling history and magical system. The conflict between Asteroth and Ilanthus provides a solid foundation for the story, adding depth to the characters' motivations and choices.

Wren and Finn are well-developed protagonists, their internal struggles and external conflicts driving the narrative forward. Their chemistry is palpable, and the slow-burn romance feels organic within the context of their opposing loyalties and shared magical connection.

The pacing is well-balanced, alternating between heart-pounding action, political manoeuvring, and tender moments of character development. This variety keeps readers engaged throughout, making it difficult to put the book down.

While the enemies-to-lovers trope is familiar in fantasy romance, the author brings fresh elements to the table. The unique magical bond between Wren and Finn adds an intriguing layer to their relationship, raising the stakes both personally and politically.

The supporting cast is equally compelling, hinting at potential subplots and character arcs that could be explored in future instalments.

"A Touch of Shadows" will appeal to fans of fantasy romance seeking a perfect blend of action, magic, and passion. It stands confidently alongside works by popular authors in the genre, offering a promising start to what is sure to be an addictive series.

In conclusion, this novel delivers on all fronts - enchanting world-building, sizzling romance, and a plot that keeps readers guessing. It's a must-read for anyone who enjoys their fantasy with a hefty dose of romance and intrigue.

first of all, thank you jessica thorne & netgalley for the ARC

while i loved the storyline and concept i did not love the execution. i found the prose juvenile and repetitive. the growth of the main cast (elodie, finn, wren) was decent but the characters didn't have much depth otherwise? the last 20~ or so percent of the book became really intriguing and had me hooked till the ending but getting there just felt like a chore. even with my rating i see myself curious about the second installment due to the ending.
