The House of Last Resort is a much quieter horror from Christopher Golden in the vein of the Omen or the Exorcist that builds slowly and saves its shocks until the final pages
While perhaps a little overlong in its set up, this is a solid story about family, religion, superstition and demonic possession.
The Italian setting makes for an interesting backdrop and the narrative of an American couple trying to make a new life is well developed. The horror elements do feel a little underdone and a level of patience is required for those expecting fast thrills.
This is a book for those who prefer their chills on the brooding side of scary.
