I really enjoyed Cuckoo; it was such a gripping and intriguing read! I couldn’t put it down as I was so keen to find out what was going on. I couldn’t work out why Noah was pretending not to know Claire, his own fiancée!
Claire’s diary entries make for fascinating reading, as well as the flashbacks to comments from her mother, who sounds like an awful woman.
Overall, this was an entertaining read, which kept me hooked to the end!
I breezed through this book on my train journey to London at the weekend. It’s such an easy book to get into and had me completely enraptured. It’s an aptly named book as well since I kept thinking the MC is cuckoo!
I felt so sorry for Claire and everything that happened to her but the ending did take me by surprise and I quite liked the different ending to the story.
An OK read, regular thriller readers will no doubt guess the main twist.
I felt that Claire’s relationship with her mother could have been explored more.
3 stars.
Thank you so much to Netgalley, Penguin Random House & Callie Kazumi for allowing me to read Cuckoo in exchange for honest feedback!
This was a brilliant book & very aptly named!! It gripped me from page 1 and 'Cuckoo' came into my head A LOT throughout the story!
I've read a lot of thrillers over the years, but this felt different, in a good way!
The pace was great, keeping enough suspense & 'wtf' moments throughout to keep you engrossed. I was fully immersed in the storyline & felt the emotions Claire was describing when she found out her husband left his job 9 months earlier & she knew nothing about it! Then, the tables started to turn....
I had an inkling about the turn that the story was going to take quite early on, but it's a thriller that completely messes with your head & makes you doubt what's real and what isn't, so it still kept me guessing!
The journal entries really make you feel like you're inside Claire's head & immersed me into the story. Her history with her mother is very dark & explains a lot as the story develops.
The ending though?! When Cuckoo is released on 13th March 2025, you NEED to add it to you library! 😍
Claire decides to surprise her fiancé, Noah, at work for their anniversary. She is absolutely shocked when she arrives to find out he left the company nine months ago. He now isn’t answering her calls or texts, he has simply vanished.
Ermmm okay, so first things first - I think this book needs a new title! I don’t want to give away any spoilers so just trust me on this one!
This has been classed as a thriller but I would have to disagree. Yes, there are some small thriller elements to it but I think it was more of a contemporary book.
I feel like the book is trying to be two things in one and it should have just picked one avenue and gone in that direction. It’s trying to be a thriller but also explore something quite serious. Sorry this is really vague but it’s hard to keep this review spoiler free!
I liked the idea behind the story and I think the author has written the characters well. It was also an easy read so it would be a good palate cleanser.
Overall I found this easy to read but it was predictable and it didn’t shock me once.
This was a good read. Some classic twists that were enjoyable. Thanks for the opportunity to rate and review.
This book had a great plot with intriguing characters. I’ll definitely be looking out for more from this author.
The cover of this book immediately sold me in wanting to read this debut thriller and the book did not disappoint. While predictable in parts, the story was still gripping and entertaining. Would definitely recommend to any thriller lover. Thank you netgalley for this ARC
Firstly thank you to the publishers for my early access in exchange for a review.
I flew through this fantastic debut which I predict will be huge next year when it’s published.
This has you hooked straight away and you really sympathising with the main character and what she’s going through.
As the story unravels truths are revealed and all is not what it seems in every way possible!
Riveting , addictive and compelling.
Unpredictable and unsettling this will get under your skin.
A incredibly written and layered suspense thriller .
I can’t wait to read more from this author and wish her every successs with this book.
This book, Cuckoo, is a total page-turner. I couldn't put it down! It's about Claire, whose fiancé suddenly vanishes without a trace. She's desperate to find him and unravel the mystery.
I loved Claire's character and the way the story unfolds. It's full of twists and turns, and I was always guessing what would happen next. If you enjoy thrillers with strong female characters, this is a must-read!
I spent the first half of this novel more than ready and willing to hate it - the main character is whiny and annoying and makes more than enough questionable decisions to make you want to grab her by the shoulders and shake some sense into her. Pretty much halfway through the novel, everything changes and it gets much much more interesting pretty much instantly - I won't spoil it, but the second half of the novel makes Claire much more interesting and makes you really want to find out just what has been going on.
This book gripped my attention from the first page, following Claire who was happily engaged until she goes to Noah’s work to drop off his lunch to find out he doesn’t work there - and now he’s not answering her texts or calls?
It’s told from Claire’s POV, switching between current day, her Diary entry’s from when she met Noah and the past showing her difficult relationship with her mum.
The first half of this book left me reeling, why is Noah acting like this?! Then things take a sudden, unexpected turn. The last quarter of the book I could see the next twist coming, but this didn’t ruin my enjoyment at all. The last page though!!!!
I really enjoyed reading this and can see it being a very popular book! Thank you for the chance to read this ARC
A very accomplished debut novel, the impression is that of someone who has a few novels under their belt.
The synopsis is readily available so not repeated here.
Characterisation is quite strong and you start to gain and understanding of their importance to the protagonist.
The epilogue has a twist which is alluded to throughout her reflections, so for some will not be so much of a twist, also this felt a tiny bit rushed in comparison to the rest of the book.
It was a read that kept my attention as it twisted and turned and I shall look forward to Callie's next works.
Thank you to Netgalley and the publishers for this ARC which is due out 13th March 2025.
A wow of a read. This being Callie Kazumi's debut novel I cannot wait to read her next one.
It was gripping, I cannot imaging being engaged to someone only to find them living with someone else and having your life scrutinised so people around you think you are deranged. This is a great phycological thriller, with twists you do not see coming. Characters are so believable. Well done Callie for writing a very suspenseful and scary novel.
First of all thank you for approving my request!
I thoroughly enjoyed this book! The authors writing style had me hooked throughout this book.
I didn't want it to end, a book I really couldn't put down.
Oooh, I enjoyed this. From the beginning (Claire's first diary entry) there's a real sense that all is not what it seems. I wasn't sure, at first, if she was deliberately deceiving us or if there was something else going on. As the plot unfolds, there are plenty of twists and turns to keep you guessing.
The basic premise is that Claire is in what seems to be a near-perfect relationship with Noah. But then she turns up at his work one day to surprise him and he's not there. Not only that, but he hasn't been there for the last nine months - which means he's been lying to her for a long time.
I think this is a debut and, if so, it marks the start of a promising new career for Callie Kazumi. The characters were spot on, there were enough twists and turns to keep me reading. I sort of guessed the final twist but that didn't take away my enjoyment of the book. Oh, and what a GREAT cover too!
This book was totally different than I was expecting… in a good way! Just when I thought I was getting to grips with it, it changed direction, and everything I thought I knew I really didn’t! I read it quickly as I was desperate to find out what was going to happen next. It was definitely darker and more disturbing than I was expecting, but cleverly written and a really suspenseful read.. I’m looking forward to reading Callie Kazumi’s next novel.
Claire decides to surprise her hardworking fiancé with lunch one day when she finds that he has disappeared. With a past and present dual timeline this book was one that I couldn’t put down. Claire has not had a good past and with mental health problems which have gotten worse she is struggling. The relationship with her mother was toxic and I resonate with this so much, she is a victim of her own families doing,
I enjoyed this book, it was described as a thriller, but I didn’t find it suspenseful or thriller-esque. The story unfolded and I was able to predict most of the reveals! But I would recommend and read other books by this author.
This novel was FANTASTIC. I cannot recommend this book wholly enough. I read Callie’s elevator pitch on Twitter many moons back and I looooved it even then so actually getting to read the book was even better.
Cuckoo tells the story of Claire, who is in an amazing relationship with Noah - they’re engaged and life is good … until Noah disappears. Claire decides to take lunch to Noah one day only to find he hasn’t worked there for 9 months and didn’t tell her. Claire is frantic, desperate to know what’s going on and why Noah didn’t tell her, but he won’t answer her calls and her texts go unanswered and soon Claire has to take more drastic measures to try and find Noah.
This novel was amazing. Genuinely amazing; so very fast-paced and I was hooked from the very start. I loved Claire as a character, I found her so relatable and she has such a unique voice. The diary entries relating to her relationship with Noah were fascinating and the flashbacks to her childhood were sad, and I applauded how she’d come back from such a terrible childhood and had managed to find the love of her life - or so she thought!
This book had absolutely everything - it was thrilling, it had me on the edge of my seat, I never knew what was coming next and I was constantly surprised. I don’t want to give masses away as I feel like you need to read this novel blind to fully appreciate it.
Callie is a fantastic new writing talent, I am so incredibly excited to see what she does next and this blew my socks off!
