Whew! This book took my breath away! Two storylines emerge: Nancy is a mother in 1970 living in an abusive marriage; Melissa is a grandmother in present day.
One day, Melissa abducts a baby, and everything changes in her world. As we learn more about Nancy’s and Melissa’s lives, connecting threads develop and lead to a surprising and heart-stopping conclusion. Fast-paced with dynamic characters, this was a whirlwind to read! The details are riveting and I couldn’t put this book down! A to-read book for the summer!
This is the first book I have read from J A Baker. It waa such a good read with lots of twists & turns. I enjoyed the past & present aspects of this book & how it all came together.
Check the trigger warnings as this book contains domestic violence, child abduction & mentions of suicide.
Thank you to Boldwood Books, Netgalley and J A Baker for an ARC copy. All opinions are my own.
This is a new author for me and I have to say I was impressed. Fast paced storyline that hooked me from the start that was both thrilling but tense at the same time. Plenty of twists and turns and the ending was great. I will definitely look to read more by this author.
I had such a difficult time to get into this book and I believe it’s because I don’t care for the protagonist.
Thanks to Netgalley and Book Whisperer for this ARC.
A baby…an accident…mystery…intrigue…recipe for a cannot put down novel. This talented author has written a page turner. Red herrings and secrets kept me interested. The baby…how could this woman keep a baby she stole? What about the witness? Where could she live with the baby and stay secreted? Questions answered…that being said…some language was distracting..thanks Netgalley.
I really enjoyed reading this book, I felt that the character development was well thought out and I enjoyed the easy flow if the story. I was honestly hooked from the first chapter.
Wow this has lots of twists and turns.it kept me on the of my seat all way through this book.
I would definitely recommend this book to friends and family.
I would also love to read more from this author.
Thank you very much .
Thanks to NetGalley, the publisher and the author for the ARC in exchange for an honest review.
This was a kind of fun and quick and easy read. I didn't personally root for the protagonist because I failed to feel invested in her motivations, but it was a quick thriller.
I prefer this author's previous novel, though..
Hush Little Baby by J.A. Baker is a gripping psychological thriller that keeps readers on the edge of their seats from start to finish. Baker skillfully weaves a tale of suspense and intrigue, delivering a story filled with unexpected twists and turns.
The novel centers around a young mother whose seemingly perfect life begins to unravel when she starts experiencing disturbing and inexplicable events. As the tension builds, Baker expertly delves into themes of paranoia, trust, and the lengths one will go to protect their loved ones.
The protagonist is well-developed, and her descent into fear and uncertainty is portrayed with chilling realism. Baker’s ability to capture the psychological turmoil of her characters adds depth to the narrative, making their experiences feel both relatable and unsettling.
The plot is fast-paced and tightly constructed, with each chapter adding new layers of mystery and suspense. Baker’s writing style is crisp and engaging, with vivid descriptions that draw readers into the story and keep them hooked until the final page. The twists are cleverly executed, ensuring that the story remains unpredictable and captivating throughout.
While some secondary characters could benefit from further development, this does not detract significantly from the overall impact of the novel. The focus remains firmly on the central storyline, which is compelling and thought-provoking.
Overall, Hush Little Baby is a thoroughly enjoyable read for fans of psychological thrillers. J.A. Baker has crafted a tense and riveting story that will leave readers questioning everything and eagerly anticipating what comes next. This book is a testament to Baker’s skill in creating suspenseful and engaging narratives.
A good read, wasn't keen on Melissa or the two storylines but I did enjoy the book overall.
To be honest for me personally it wasn't a page turner nor did it keep me on the edge of my seat.
Thank you to Netgalley and Boldwood Books for this ARC.
A great read.
Melissa steals a baby from outside a house, she believes she has to protect this child. She takes him away to a remote cottage in Scotland. After all she is the baby's grandmother.
The story is told in 2 timelines but it is a gripping brilliant read.
I received this book from NetGalley.
Well, this book just starts with a bang. Melissa is crazy, it seems. Stealing a baby, knocking over a harmless, old man. I'm interested to see what happens next. The story also tells two different stories at once. Realising that Melissa's the girl from the other part of the story does make a bit of sense.
Melissa is a bit annoying because she keeps going on about how she can't do this and what was she thinking... And then tells herself that she did the right thing. But this continues over and over again. It's a bit much. She's made a decision and now she has to live with it.
I really thought that something had happened to George so it was a nice twist that something happened to the dad instead. It gives more explanation as to why Melissa is messed up when she seemed like such a sweet and loving child.
Plot twist: I did think that maybe Gabriel wasn't her grandson and she had taken someone else's while thinking it was him. I was not prepared for what actually happened - woah! That explains a lot.
Definitely a book I'd recommend!
A fast paced psychological thriller with a vibrant set of characters - some you'll love, some you'll love to hate!
As a grandmother myself I thought the premise was fascinating and the twisty narrative kept me reading way into the early hours of the morning.
Melissa was an incredible character and despite her actions I couldn't help but feel a swell of empathy for her.. I was also constantly anxious about Gabriel's wellbeing and I just couldn't sleep until I knew how it would end for them both.
Another brilliant book from Baker and one I can
highly recommend.
To protect her grandson from his abusive parents, Melissa snatched him one day and is now on the run from the authorities…
This book was a quick read and had me on my toes. Such a good story that keeps you going because you just have to know the outcome. And things are not what they seem. I love stories like this that are fast paced and really shock you with the ending.
A tense and exciting thriller that keeps you turning the pages. Plenty of shocks and I loved the ending!
Melissa keeps watch over a house where she is convinced that a baby is being neglected. The house is that of her son and his wife.
Melissa lived in a home where her father brutally abused her mother before his death.
She decides to take the baby and care for him herself, and is on the run.
Wow. I Love J A Baker's books! This one is no exception. This is told from the POV of Nancy, Melissa's mother, in the past, and the POV of Melissa in the present.
Nancy's story gave me the chills, the description of how she stayed with a man who was respected in the community, but behind closed doors beat her black and blue.
Those who know what it is like, treading softly and being afraid of saying the wrong thing will be haunted by Nancy's words.
Melissa was very affected by her father's deeds and his death, and, while I cannot condone what she did, I can understand it.
I don't want to spoil the book for readers, but definitely, this will pull at your heartstrings.
I have to recommend, and give 5/5 stars.
Thanks to Netgalley and Boldwood Books for the opportunity to read this book.
I will admit I was slightly incredulous that this started out with someone kidnapping a random child. However I stuck with the book and I'm so glad I did. This a complex tale of mental health, abuse and suffering. It's extremely well written, as are all Baker's novels. At times it's a tough read too. An excellent novel that I really enjoyed.
It’s almost a running theme that I will say I think this new book is the best by this author….but again it is true
A harrowing tale indeed and am mentioning that spousal physical and psychological abuse and the effects of this are prominent in the book
Melissa is a complex character who has had more than an unenviable life and we meet her as she kidnaps a child,it is a eyebrow raising start and sets the tone for the rest of the book as we alternate between the 1970’s and present and read the disgusting time she had with Roger, her husband, outwardly affable and kind,a GP no less but behind closed doors he was evil…..there is no excuse for what Melissa has done but as a reader I did empathise and understand her thought processes
As the story progresses more drama happens to Melissa and the child she taken and things seem untenable….and I will stop there…….
Very emotive,I could feel Melissa’s anguish and pain and insecurity and wanted to help her,yep the author did a great job of realism and edginess and combined with a really good story made this a classically great thriller
Lots of suspense and interest as the chapters go back and forth from Nancy's life before and Melissa life in the present.
Melissa kidnaps her grandson Gabriel as she feels he is being neglected. On the run she has trouble after trouble along with a sick baby.. she is very worried for the baby but knows she can't show up at the hospital with him. Things come to a head when a man on the run shows up at the remote cabin she's staying at and threatens her.
Lots of interesting suspense and a good ending
