People come from miles around to try Chef Stefan’s famous cakes at The Incredible Hotel. When Chef Stefan’s dream comes true and he gets to compete in the World Baking Competition, he works for weeks to perfect his chocolate cake recipe. On the morning of the event, his recipe is missing! Fortunately, his best friend Matilda is a budding detective. Will she find the recipe in time? Who could the thief be?
This delightful book is a cozy introduction to mysteries for young readers. The beautifully detailed illustrations drop clues about the mischievous thief and add lush details to the whimsical Incredible Hotel. With kind, curious, and determined characters and thoughtfully detailed illustrations, it reminds me of The Questioneers series by Andrea Beaty.
I read this with my 8 year old daughter and she absolutely loved it. She was totally hooked and it was short enough to keep her totally engaged the entire time. The “twist” was very cute and she loved the cakes! I would definitely buy this for her and as gifts for friends kids!
As a reader who loves children/middle-grade books and a fan of illustrations I truly loved A Mystery at the Incredible Hotel and there are 3 main reasons I would like to highlight.
First of all, the story is engaging and easy to follow, it manages to develop unique characters with a mystery that any young reader can understand. I was particularly impressed by the female main character as the book managed to showcase prejudices against women but in a lighter tone that suits the book's target audience.
Secondly, the illustration's style suits the story perfectly as it gives a rather vintage and classical story vibe which is exactly what the setting needed to showcase. I also loved finding the tiny details and easter eggs throughout the story.
Finally, I appreciated how I could easily follow the story without having read book one as I believe it's essential for children books to be like this. It creates accessibility and engagement.
Overall, I really enjoyed the story and would recommend it to any children. It is also good book for parents to read with their kids and find different hints in the illustrations, making it a dynamic experience.

Adorable book. The pictures and story are captivating at each turn of the page. I enjoyed the end with the happy ending and the relationship between the MC and the supporting characters as well. This book would not be what it is without all the characters.
Absolutely loved this book. A little fun suspense and fun mystery allowing the reader to play detective along side Matilda and root for Chef Stephan as well. Just wish I could have eaten that cake hotel myself, as the pictures are delectable.

A Mystery at the Incredible Hotel by Kate Davies is a lovely picture book that would be the perfect gift for the child in your life. Although this is the second book in a series, I read this book without reading the first book, and I was perfectly entertained. I did not feel like I was missing any information. The story revolves around the World Baking Competition at the titular Incredible Hotel. One day, Stefan realizes his chocolate cake recipe is missing. It's up to his best friend Matilda to figure out what's going on and who stole the recipe.
Overall, A Mystery at the Incredible Hotel is an adorable picture book that will bring entertainment to children of all ages. One highlight of this book are the fantastic and cute character designs. I loved seeing all of the different characters that live the Incredible Hotel. Another highlight of this book is how delightful the plotline is. I loved watching at Detective Matilda follows the clues to find the culprit. If you're intrigued by the synopsis, or if you're a fan of children's picture books in general, I highly recommend that you check out this book when it comes out in September!
A Mystery at the Incredible Hotel has gorgeous illustrations! They’re beautiful and make this book easily stand out from the rest. They’re colorful and fill the pages—my kind of book!
I didn’t love the story. While it was fun with an interesting premise, most conflicts were solved within a page or two (or even on the SAME page) to the point where it felt a bit lazy and weak and not as exciting as it could have been.
Absolutely loved the illustrations in this book. The story was super cute and sweet too. Very lovely children's book.
This book was super cute. My 8 year old son thought it was hilarious. The illustrations were so good. Can't wait to tell friends about this one.
Adorable story about a hotel that is hosting a baking challenge. A recipe goes missing and the bellhop uses her detective skills to solve the mystery. It was exciting and had beautiful pictures! It was a fun read and kept my 4-year-old captivated.
This book is a terrific read for a young lover of mysteries. They will meet Matilda who is a hotel bellhop. Will she be able to solve the case of the stolen secret recipe? It is needed for the World Baking Contest. The hotel’s Chef Stefan sure hopes so!
Matilda faces some doubts and accusations from those around her. Will she triumph? Who turns out to be behind the theft? Young children will enjoy finding out.
Isabella Follath has created delightful illustrations that enhance the enjoyment of the story. All in all, this is a short and appealing book.
Many thanks to NetGalley and Quarto Publishing Group for this title. All opinions are my own.
Thank you so much to Quarto Kids/ Francis Lincoln and Netgalley for the ebook to read and review.
There’s a big baking contest happening and Chef Stefan has been invited to compete, it’s hosted at the incredible hotel. He works hard to create the best recipe he can but on the day of the contest it’s missing. Bellhop Matilda is on the case and works hard to find all the missing things.
A really cute and fun read, I loved stepping back into the incredible hotel and seeing what was going on there this time. I loved that Stefan has become famous as a chef now for the delicious cakes he bakes, and that it got him invited to compete against other famous chefs.
The illustrations were so beautiful to look at, so many colours and I love seeing so much going on in each picture, it makes them so fun to just look at and find everything. This one with the added mystery made it even more fun looking at it as you’re trying to follow Matilda to see the crime and who stole the recipe and other wares.
This was a really fun read with a mystery twist within it, young readers are going to love this book so much, it’s beautiful to look at, it’s got a fun story, a mystery and it’s an easy to read book.
This was very adorable! This book, which is the sequel to The Incredible Hotel, is way better than the first one. As always, the illustrations are phenomenal. A recipe goes lost during a baking competition in this fast-paced, light, and entertaining mystery. I will absolutely pick up the next installment if there is one!
Thank you to Netgalley and Quarto Publishing Group – Frances Lincoln Children's Books for the arc.
A baking competition is coming to the whimsical Incredible Hotel and their own chef is selected to participate. However, his recently perfected recipe has now gone missing right before the competition!
A fun, imaginative book with eye-catching illustrations that will thrill children and adults alike. It's as if you have a touch of The British Bake-Off mixed with Nancy Drew and a dash of Eloise to get this adorable mystery with fun characters.
Thank you to NetGalley for the opportunity to read this book for free in exchange for my honest review.
This is the second book set at The Incredible Hotel and this one is even better than book one [which was really magnificent on its own]; it is a fantastic book with a mystery and a baking competition and a lesson in not always judging a book by its cover.
As you look closely at each fabulous illustration [these are really amazing and I admit I read the book twice just so I could focus on the illustrations the second time around] page, you will find new things every time you look at them and you will be able to see clues [along with what Miranda the Bellhop finds] to solve the mystery [and what a fun, unexpected reveal that was]! Then it is off to the baking competition and well, I will let you read that for yourself!! Once again, make sure you are paying attention to all the illustrations, especially the cat and mouse, as they have their own fun going on.
Absolutely delightful, kids of all ages will love this, and will keep them busy for hours, searching for new things in the illustrations.
Very well done!!

A great follow up story to the original "The Incredible Hotel", which my 3 year old adores.
He will be thrilled to be able to go on another adventure in this magical setting.
While I didn't find the storyline to be as strong as the first book, it was still a very enjoyable read and the art continues to be mesmerising.
It will definitely become a new addition to our ever growing home library.
It is such a delight to read about Chef Stefan again. This one is significantly different from the first one and considerably harder than the first one. I still love this one though as it has such an engaging and sweet story with stunning illustration.
I enjoyed this story. It was engaging and fast paced enough for young readers to stay interested. It had enough substance for a complete story. I also liked the illustrations.
A cute story that tells the lesson that things are not always as they appear so making accusations without all the information is not the way to go about things.
Thank you for the gifted arc!
Such a fun read for children! It was fast paced and had a wonderful HEA for everyone! The illustrations were beautiful as well!
The illustrations are absolutely beautiful. If I could, I would definitely buy it myself. I think many children would enjoy reading it due to its engaging plot and short length, not to mention those adorable illustrations. It will surely catch your attention.
Thanks to NetGalley and Kate Davies for the opportunity to read and review this book.
