All in all I enjoyed this book, which was generally well written and had an interesting story to tell
The reason the score is lower however is that the story can take quite a while to build to what is a good finish. I appreciate that as the first book in the series, it is effectively world building, but the training at Hourglass or perhaps the trek through Erebus could have been shorter and not diminished the book. Unfortunately at times this led me to be disengaged from the story.
By the end however I was glad that I had started the book and enjoyed the ending, which was at a quick pace and engaging.
Overall, whilst it wasn't one of my favourite reads, I did enjoy it and will certainly take read the second in the series.
It took me a while to really get into this book and remember who each character was. Definitely not a light read for me, but once I got to knowing more about what was happening, I seemed to read at a much faster pace. I'm glad I read it as it made a change to my usual murder/ thriller reads and there wasn't any chance of me predicting the ending. I also found some parts quite funny while they were 'training', plus a moment near the beginning!
This is a very atmospheric book with realistic characters, even though it has this urban fantasy vibe to it.
The dynamic between Clyde and Kev was a pleasure to follow, and Daniel James' writing is captivating enough. It starts out slow but then it picks up.
