Meet the Parents is written by Emily Shiner. This is the first book that I have read by this author, and it will not be my last. A master of craft, this psychological thriller drew me in within the first few pages. I was not able to put it down. The characters are well written, the storyline is oozing with suspense. Once you start reading you will not want to stop.
The author writes the story from three points of view. Marta, the mother, Owen her son and his girlfriend, Gina. However they are all woven together seamlessly. Owen wants to propose to Gina, however Marta does NOT want him to settle down. Owen brings Gina home to meet his parents. It does NOT go well.
Marta and Grant are more then your typical over protective parent. It does not take long for Marta to show her true intentions. However, the house burns down. SOMEONE does not make it out alive. So many twists and turns that I did not see coming.
This is a brilliantly written psychological thriller. I hope to read more by this author in the future.
Thank you to the author and publisher for allowing me to read a copy of this book. All thoughts are my own.
'Meet the Parents' presented an intriguing narrative, replete with unexpected developments and characters that were difficult to like. While I neither adored nor despised it, the experience was certainly memorable.
Thank you to NetGalley and Bookouture for my ARC.
I was so excited for this one it seemed so good with all the reviews, but it just felt a little predictable, the characters were very unlikable and I just didn't find myself really invested in the story, but at the same time I couldn't look away.
This book had my heart racing!!
Twisted and dark and constantly had me wanting to turn the pages.
Definitely an author I will be trying more books from!!
This is my first book from Emily Shiner and it definitely won’t be my last. I enjoyed this thriller so much I read it in one sitting because it was so creepy and had me on the edge of my seat I had to know what was going to happen next! If you think you’ve already read a hundred books about crazy in-laws, think again! This book was so unlike any of the others that I have read and it really stands apart as something new and exciting. There is a lot of hopping back and forth between the past and present, but the story continued to flow so well and I never got lost or confused. Also, that one scene with her FIL and her sitting in the woods will creep me out for months to come.
Overall, this is the perfect thriller to start out spooky season with and it’s on KINDLE UNLIMITED! Now you have no excuse not to read it.
This book is full of twists and turns and made me want to keep reading all the way through. The characters were shockingly deceptive and their backstories are the stuff of nightmares! All of the characters have their own personalities that shine through in the book.
I absolutely loved this book, it was full of secrets, suspense that kept me glued, and the ending was great!!
Such a fun read! Highly recommend.
Many thanks to Netgalley, the author, and the publisher for my ARC. All opinions are my own.
I really wanted to love this book. It started off strong but the longer I read and the more I delved into it, it felt as though it was just repeating and I was reading the same thing over and over again.
Gina had a traumatic event occur during childhood, but she has a plan on how to deal with it later on in life. Owen ticks every box, smart, handsome and a doctor, he’s planned to take his new girlfriend Gina home to meet the parents, but little does he know this was all apart of Gina’s plan…. And his parents.
This book has twists and turns, a few that were predictable and a few that weren’t. Unfortunately it just didn’t hit the mark for me, I didn’t hate it, but I didn’t love it.
This was an excellent thriller, in which I thought I knew what was coming and then I had no idea what was going to happen next. Although I did expect who died to die, I did not expect the reason why it happened to be the reason it happened. I am going to suggest this book for my thriller book club later this month, I believe that my friends would enjoy this book as well!
Oh wow! This is an edge of your seat psychological thriller. Girlfriends goes to meet the parents. Lots of secrets to be uncovered, by all of them!
Well, well, well this book was interesting. It definitely kept my attention the whole time and I thought the premise was very intriguing. I guessed the ending but I have been reading thrillers since I was in middle school. Overall, a very solid read.
I like this author, but I was a bit disappointed in it as I found it to be predictable. To be honest it was a bit over the top for me.
Just wow! A stunning read. Unputdownable. I was glued, frantically turning the pages, wanting to get to the end and yet not wanting the book to end. Highly recommend this one.
Woah what an incredible #Book #MeetTheParents was by @authoreshiner
I have never met a character that makes me seriously cringe quite as much as Marta the Mother did. I get the love for the child is huge, but sheesh this woman took it a step too far.
Meet The Parents was incredibly written, and had me hooked instantly… although I hated how Gina was very repetitive in what she was saying throughout her chapters, it could not take it away from being a 5⭐️ #read with a killer little twist at the end.
This is definitely my favourite read of the month so far!!
Absolutely incredible! This definitely needs to be added to you #TBR
Let me preface this by saying that I thought I had a bad weekend of “meet the parents”, but this takes the cake! There are twists and turns that make you gasp while simultaneously wondering all the whys and hows. The push and pull between the characters makes for an interesting thriller to sit down with.
I love that we get the POV from Marta, Owen, and Gina – it helps build the anticipation of learning the history of what brought the characters together and seeing how things play out. Owen being the only son of Marta and Grant, so I understand the hesitancy of their son moving on. But he’s successful and is happy — right?
Owen and Gina are rushing right along on the premise of “when you know, you know”. Yet we all know there has to be more behind it. And there is for each character and their motives/actions. Marta and Grant’s attachment to Owen is a bit creepy and completely overboard for the fact that he’s over 40. Gina isn’t as innocent as she seems and it doesn’t take long for her and Marta to bring the claws out.
One of my favorite aspects of the book is how truly awful everyone is as a character! Not awfully written, but their personalities are absolutely vile – and I loved it! It was fun to read a book where no one had more than a sliver of decency. Twisted, wicked, and fun!
Gina’s aunt was killed by a serial killer and she suspects the killer was her boyfriend’s dad. When he takes her to meet his parents, she plans to find out the truth of what happened that night.
I had to keep reading as I couldn’t believe the ridiculousness of the plot. The decisions Gina made throughout the weekend were stupid and reckless, as if she was trying to get herself killed. She kept referring to having a plan but it seemed as though she was making it up as she went along. I also found the book repetitive as she kept repeating her motivation over and over, almost as if she was trying to convince herself and the reader why she was doing this.
There was a plot twist at the end which I didn’t see coming. I quite enjoyed this book in the sense that I had to keep reading to find out if Gina was as stupid as she appeared.
I received a free copy of this book via NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.
I absolutely loved this book and highly recommend, I’ve never read anything by this author before but I’ll definitely be keeping an eye out for more of their books in the future.
I originally said that I wouldn't be finishing this book, but I decided to give it a second chance. I really enjoyed "Three Drowned Girls" by this author, but this book was not for me. It was really repetitive and had unlikable characters. It was a bit cliche in a lot of moments. I did like the premise and the storyline, it just wasn't for me. I will still be trying books by this author though.
Future Monster-in-Law … I have so many feelings about this book, that contradict, but fit. This book was slow, yet fast. I liked and hated the characters. It’s one of those “I know, but do you know I know? What do you know about what I know?” Situations. There are 4 main characters, which keeps the plot simple; Owen (the boyfriend), Marta (Owen's mom), Grant (Owen's dad), and Gina (the girlfriend). Gina is meeting Owens parents for the 1st time, which in itself is terrifying. You find out fairly quick that everyone is hiding a secret. It seems that everyone knows each other (but don’t know if they all realize they know each other). This book had me hooked, and reading every chance I could.
