A must have cozy read!
Heathers take on fairies was fresh in her first story and in the second book we set off on a new adventure and finally start to get some of that slow burn payoff. Dare I say I liked it more than the first?
It was a great ending with an open door finish and can't wait to see what she cooks up next!
I absolutely adore this book. It is a fun cozy fantasy and the representation of academics is perfect. Some of things about Ireland/Irish fae could use more work but mostly it’s spot on. It suffer from the fate of a lot of people who forget Ireland is a real place, but otherwise I loved it. The characters are still just as amusing and I love the banter.
Many thanks to Little, Brown Book Group UK and Heather Fawcett for the advanced copy of Emily Wilde’s Map of the Otherlands via NetGalley, in return for my honest and unbiased review. Quick note: I don’t recap plots in my reviews, as it’s easy enough to read the book’s synopsis and blurbs, I purely focus on my feelings & opinions of how the books makes me feel.
I was very excited when I found out there was to be a sequel to Emily Wilde’s Encyclopaedia of Faeries, which I thoroughly enjoyed. The Map of the Otherlands did not disappoint. Whilst perhaps a bit slow to get started, it maintained the same air of mystery and wonderful academic charm of the first book in the series.
The footnotes are phenomenal, the books and papers quoted feel absolutely real and genuine. I could believe that Dryadology is a genuine study and that the Folk are a real and known phenomenon in our world.
Emily, the protagonist, is written as perhaps being mildly autistic – something I can identify with. But this is written in nothing but a positive light and is never made into a negative or dramatic thing. Likewise, there are mentions of same-sex romantic pairings which are treated as extremely normal and not commented on – something which I also really appreciate in a story.
Overall I enjoyed this story tremendously, despite its slightly slower start, and I’m very much looking forward to the next book in the series to see how Emily and Wendell’s tale progresses.

So amazing. I loved this book. Emily and Wendell are everything and thier growth as a couple so perfect. I loved that poe is was still part of the story I love that little guy. I cannot wait for the next one 😍
🌶️ Rating: 4 on the RCRS scale (fade-to-black)
Another uniquely original story with Emily Wilde & Wendell Bambleby! Although fairly slow paced, the writing style & character development is so special and different. Neither Emily nor Wendell try to endear themselves to anyone, and they don’t ever really apologise for the decisions they make - particularly those that result in saving each other.
While their relationship was incredibly new and a little unsure in book 1, it’s great to dive into it more in this book as Emily grapples with Wendell’s proposal. I’m looking forward to seeing where the plot goes in book 3!
Thank you to NetGalley for the opportunity to read and review Emily Wilde’s Map of the Otherlands.
3.5 STARS
Compared to the first book this one is less cozy, but it is still a nice book with which to cozy up on the couch, with hot tea with you. I loved that the story is told through Emily’s entries in her journal (and I loved that we got a chapter written by Wendell too). It made for a really biased narrator because we meet some new characters here, Ariadne and Rose, and we see them through Emily’s lenses, so we aren’t really impartial toward them, but this is a thing that I appreciated a lot. I don’t want it for all my books, sure, but it was a nice change of pace.
And Emily is a great narrator, so I am more than okay with this.
The book as a whole was interesting and I enjoyed following Emily and her “team” exploring the Alps, but the end felt a bit rushed, especially the resolution to the main conflict.
It is true that in part is due to the fact that Emily’s memory is addled, and this is a brilliant thing, but still… it felt a tad rushed.
That said, I really enjoy Emily and Wendell. Wendell is a dear, and I would have loved to see him a bit more, especially because things aren’t really looking great for him in this book, and a couple of chapters by his POV would have been interesting (and fun, because Wendell is fun!) but Emily is so refreshing! I love her because she stands her ground and she knows her worth. And this is just sooo good!
Sure, she may not be your usual kick-ass heroine, but I loved that she can stand for herself. Sometimes she may border on arrogant, but she never passes the limit, she is just very good at what she does and she knew it. She is not apologetic, she is not humble, she knows she is good and she made the other face it! Lately, I read a lot of books about people who were just so insecure and who just were “yes people” and it was so annoying. I loved to see Emily being so strong and self-assured! I think that this was, by far, my favorite thing in the book.
Mind me, it is a nice book on the whole, with interesting characters, both old and new (Shadow and Poe are my favorites!!), and an intriguing plot (and we get to see Faery’s land!!). I had fun with it, and I think Emily is becoming one of my favorite academics!
Unfortunately this one was not for me. I loved the creativity and premise of this though. Thanks for the opportunity to read this in advance.
The second book in this delightful series and it was beautiful and magical! Emily Wilde and her scholar Wendell Bambleby are on another adventure, this time seeking out another way in to his faerie realm. The dynamics between them continued to be hilarious and I loved the light steps into a slow burn romance potential. The writing is poetic and I cannot wait for more!
I loved this book! Emily and Wendell are so much fun together. I like that we get to see more of where Wendell comes from, learn about him as the story progresses while still maintaining the fae mystery.
I'm very curious about where it'll go from here.
I love this series so much - it brings me such joy as reader to get lost in this world. I cannot wait for the third instalment however will be upset that the series will be ending.
I absolutely ADORED this story. Such a magical follow up to book one, and it kept the wonderful whimsy of the series going. I character development was spot on, and I can't wait to read it again.
Emily Wilde's Map of the Otherlands : This is the second instalment of this series and it is a little more intense and darker than the first. It is a mash up of romance, academia, and fantasy. The characters are complex but likeable, and the storyline is pure escapism. Definitely a world to cosy up and get lost in.
Emily Wilde’s Map of the Otherlands is a wonderful follow-up to the first book, filled with magic, adventure, and heart. Fawcett’s writing is as engaging as ever, and I especially loved seeing Emily and Wendall’s relationship grow. Can’t wait for book 3!
Heather Fawcett does it again. With this book we continue following along Emily and Wendell and the wonderful adventure that they found themselves in.
I have to admit that Emily is not my favourite character as it can be a bit difficult to relate to her ways, however it is quite charming to see her dedication to her study and all the Fae that she encounters.
This book went a bit more dark than the 1st book, but still we continue to see the devotion that Wendell has towards Emily and see that dedication starting to be reciprocated. It was also amazing to see what Emily is capable and how she makes her moves within the fae royalty.
I enjoyed this book quite a lot and can’t wait to see what adventure are waiting on the next instalment. Definitely a recommended read.
Thank you Little Brown Book Group UK for providing this book for review consideration via NetGalley. All opinions are my own.
I just love these books, I love the slow pace, the research that must go into them, the cosy academic feel with a dash of otherworldly peril, and the focus on Emily and how she navigates relationships with others.
I did miss Wendell and Emily's banter and wish they'd had more time together on page, but I get why it wasn't there, because this is Emily's story, and Wendell isn't her sole focus, and given that she feels she knows him well enough, her concentration, and therefore ours as readers, is on the people she is less comfortable with and with the problems she faces with her work and her research.
The book definitely starts slow, and I think readers used to romance and more YA fantasy romance might expect the marriage proposal and the romantic plotline to take centre stage and progress pretty quickly, but Emily's relationship with Wendell is something she still has to navigate and think about and fit into her life and goals, so I think the slow development of their story as a couple works for me.
Also, love the cat!
These books just have everything I love, and a main character I understand, relate to and cheer for, love it!
This was a just a great read. I was just all in the story.
Loved the MCs. Lovely written book. i enjoyed more than I expected I would
Never have I ever been this obsessed with a series! 📚💫
My review may be late, but it’s only because I didn’t want to finish this book—it was just too good, and I had to savor every page!
Emily is hands-down one of my favorite FMCs ever, and Wendel... well, he’s simply too precious! 🥹💖 I adore how the author blends hilarious scenes with that scientific journaling style, all while showing more of Emily’s emotions in this second book.
Every character, both new and familiar, brought something wonderful to the story. I genuinely can’t wait for the next book! 📖✨
This is a series I recommend to EVERYONE, young and old—it’s too good to miss!
Thank you, NetGalley and Little, Brown Book Group UK | Orbit for providing access to the audio ARC in exchange for an honest review.
For a cosy fantasy, a genre I should, on paper, love but often struggle with as time goes on - Emily Wilde's seems to contain enough elements to keep me entertained. It's got a fascinating world, Heather Fawcett's mind creating imagery that follows no rules and compares to nothing I've ever read. But apart from that, the key jewel of the series is still its main characters.
While the new characters brought some further developments, the best parts of the book were still the scenes in which Emily and Wendell interacted with each other, pushing each other and growing together. It was so beautiful to see her open up and become more affectionate towards him. Every single time they had an honest conversation my love for the series made itself known better and better.
However... once they were apart, my enthusiasm for the book faded bit by bit, to a point where I was simply reading to get it done with, rather than enjoying the journey.
Still, I'm very much looking forward to the next one.
Utterly captivating.
Emily Wilde's Map of the Otherlands picks up a few months after the events of the Encyclopaedia of Faeries. Now, EWEoF holds a special place in my heart - when my little boy was born, he had to spend a week in NICU. It was horrendous, and I felt helpless- the only thing I could do was read to him and this was the book I chose. It was an excellent choice, delivering pure escapism, comfort and warmth. So, I had high hopes for the sequel and it did not disappoint.
Heather Fawcett has created a truely magical and enchanting world that you can't help but lose yourself in. The main characters are completely loveable though my favourites will always be Shadow and Poe. The romance between Emily and Wendell is sweet, but not overly in your face as they set off on a quest to find a door to his realm. We meet new fae and visit new places and the book proved almost impossible to put down. I was so glad to see that there is going to be a third book!
I can't recommend this enough. Perfect cosy fantasy.
Thank you to Netgalley and the publisher for an ARC of this book!
When mysterious faeries from other realms appear at her university, curmudgeonly professor Emily Wilde must uncover their secrets before it’s too late, in this heartwarming, enchanting second installment of the Emily Wilde series.
This book works excellently as a sequel. It continues from the end of the first book and offers hints, wherever needed, of what happened earlier. There’s no wastage of time with extensive character build-up or plot recaps. It also doesn’t rush things to an end but brings the current arc to a proper close, while setting up the foundation for what’s next in store. I love it when sequels don’t just rehash events from the earlier book, but take the plot as well as the characters ahead.
Just like the first book, Emily tells the tale through journal entries, and towards the end of book we get an entry from Wendell himself. The entries are written so incredibly well, their personalities really shine through with the way each of them describe everything that happens and also with their own thoughts and reflections on everything. It’s so beautifully written that it’s hard not to fall in love with the characters and the world. It’s one of those books where you can tell every word has been thoroughly thought out and has purpose.
