Wow! What a storyline, so cleverly written, compelling and filled with so many twists and turns you don't know which rabbit hole to go down. Thoroughly enjoyed it!
My thanks to NetGalley and Orion Publishing Group for giving me the opportunity to read an advanced digital copy in return for an honest review.
Now this is a novel so hard to review because it has so many twists throughout the book and hinting at any would ruin the book.
Anna has made a new start as a baker in a small rural community, a place where 3 sixteen year old girls have vanished during an annual event called the Gathering. When a fourth girls asks Anna for help as she is afraid for her life, Anna, along with her two neighbours, start to investigate the activity at the Gathering, uncovering all sorts of goings on.
No one seems to be who they say they are and everyone has a horrific backstory. When the first twist appears in the book you think huh, I didn’t see that coming but the second twist will see you thinking back over what you’ve read. To be honest I am tempted to read the book again to see how it would read now I know what’s what!
Good read if not implausible in places but that doesn’t detract it from being a page-turner.

The Neighbour's Secret by Sharon Bolton is a book where nothing is what it seems and reader's perceptions are cleverly turned against them ,be that events or characters.
A small Lakeland village is host to an annual tradition called The Gathering, a secretive affair when a large group of churchgoers from outside appear to conducting somewhat disturbing rituals involving girls who have reached their 16th birthday behind a wall of security.
New village Baker Anna is shocked to hear that 3 of these girls have disappeared over the years at Gatherings, more shocked when the apparent 4th victim asks her for help.
Narrated by Anna's neighbour, who appears to be the local busybody and not a very pleasant character at all ,this is a tale that will keep readers on their toes as secrets and lies are revealed and a motley crew of amateur investigators try to save the next potential victim and expose the deadly secrets of the Gathering, secrets that even the local police appear not too interested in investigating. Meanwhile a deadly predator is watching the watchers and has a score to settle.
This is a great story with plenty of action,a plethora of surprises and some masterly misdirection.
I really enjoyed this! It was very twisty, and dark in tone. The chapters were short and most of them ended in cliffhangers so it was a really hard book to put down. I enjoyed the multiple points of view and timelines, and it was interesting to see how they merged. There were quite a few twists, I guessed one big one but another couple definitely took me by surprise.
My only negative was that it was a little bit far-fetched in the end, I think maybe there was one twist too many and a bit much going on, but overall I did really enjoy the book.
Sharon Bolton is incapable of writing anything bad, so although this wasn’t my favourite of hers it was still a heart-poundingly tense and thrilling read. I think it just felt like there was too much plot going on, which made it tricky to fully invest in either the current day story or the one told in flashbacks. A solid 3 stars but not a patch on last year’s book, The Fake Wife.
First of all thank you for approving my request!
I thoroughly enjoyed this book! The authors writing style had me hooked throughout this book.
I didn't want it to end, a book I really couldn't put down.
I've been a fan of Sharon Bolton's books since Sacrifice and this one didn't disappoint with its fear, atmosphere and twists. The insight into the narrators minds and the tense unfolding of events in an idyllic village kept me gripped. I counted stop reading but who needs sleep?
The small details using all senses made this an immersive experience from the baked goods in Anna's bakery to the isolated lakeside and woods where danger lurks. A perfect thriller for the dark evenings.
I think this might just be her best book yet!
I was totally captivated by this story from the very beginning, not knowing who the main narrator was until around 70% of the way through the book was different and I loved it! I kept thinking I had figured things out and then in the usual Bolton style, she threw in plot twist after plot twist! It was dark, fast paced and creepy! I really enjoyed it!! Thanks so much to NetGalley and the publishers for my ARC!
Woah! This is an excellent read with lots happening. The twists when they come are completely unexpected. I’ll read this again to see if I missed any clues.
Thanks to NetGalley and the publishers for the ARC in return for my honest and unbiased opinion.
