Ben Cooper’s The Hodder Bible Commentary: Matthew is an insightful and accessible guide to one of the most theologically rich and missionary-focused books of the Bible. This volume not only unpacks Matthew’s message with clarity but also highlights its enduring relevance for today’s readers.

From the outset, Cooper emphasizes Matthew’s unique call for discipleship and mission. He skillfully illustrates how the Gospel is not merely a narrative about Jesus Christ but a powerful summons for believers to become disciple-makers in their own contexts. The commentary’s structure allows readers to follow Matthew’s theological flow, connecting the Gospel’s themes of service, rest, and the kingdom of heaven to its central missionary purpose.

What sets this commentary apart is its balance of theological depth and practical application. Cooper masterfully combines rich exegesis with a focus on real-world implications, making it a valuable resource for pastors, teachers, and lay readers alike. The inclusion of the full NIV text alongside the commentary enhances usability, allowing readers to study Scripture and commentary side by side.

The Hodder Bible Commentary series’ commitment to a globally aware and doctrinally sensitive approach is evident in Cooper’s work. His insights reflect a deep understanding of Matthew’s message, while his explanations are both culturally relevant and theologically sound.

For those seeking a deeper understanding of the Gospel of Matthew, this commentary offers a treasure trove of wisdom. Its blend of academic rigor and practical relevance makes it an ideal companion for personal study, teaching, or preaching. Whether you are exploring Matthew for the first time or revisiting its timeless truths, Cooper’s work provides fresh insights and a renewed appreciation for the Gospel’s call to discipleship and mission.

A solid commentary on Matthew with a good introduction on the history, background and Matthew's purpose in his writing. I would have liked a table of contents as reading it on a Kindle means it is hard to go from one section to another when you can only guess what page number you might be seeking.
