Wow...
... speechless
... utterly gripped
... devoured in two sittings
... perfect poolside reading (or garden in my case)
... totally didn't see any of it coming
That is pretty much what is running through my head currently, having just finished reading this fabulous thriller, with revenge and vengeance at its heart.
I was enthralled by the dynamics between Millie and Freya, and just what is revealed over the course of the book.
What I do know is that I need to read more from this author, there is something about this book that makes me know that I'll love anything Sarah Bonner writes. It's the most hooked I have been on a book for ages, and I absolutely adored it.
It has girl power vibes all over it, despite the fact there might be murder involved. I loved all the reasoning, the characters pasts and although one reveal I had worked out, it wasn't anything like what came after that point.
With a whole lot of international travel (which always thrills me), some incredibly cunning and devious main characters, this story is just fabulous.
Thank you to Boldwood Books and Netgalley for this copy which I have reviewed honestly and voluntarily.
I would like to thank Net Galley for an ARC in exchange for an honest review.
I had started this book thinking it was just a fun chick-lit with a fun title - but it turned out to be much better than I expected!
The unexpected twists and turns through multiple POVs had me feeling like I was on a rollercoaster and I could not put the book down until I finished it!
The only reason I am giving 4 starts instead of 5 is that it felt a little bit repetitive in some places.
4.5βοΈs rounded up
The Devil Wears Prada if Miranda Priestly was a serial killer. This book was a rollercoaster with twists at every turn and I never wanted it to end! If you love unlikeable female characters youβll find yourself rooting for Freya whether you want to or not.

My dark little heart loved this one SO much! This author never disappoints, but this is my absolute favorite of hers! The humor, the pacing, EVERYTHING was just perfect.
Millie works in the beauty industry, and her boss Freya is the stuff of legend...cold, mercurial, and now she's down an assistant. Millie is shuffled into the position with no time to prepare, and while she's busy juggling Freya's coffee order and her other new responsibilities, she gets a disturbing anonymous text urging her to look into Freya's activities.
After some careful sleuthing, Millie uncovers a puzzling pattern of men who seem to have no connection to each other dying in various ways in cities where Freya was known to be at the time. Is her boss a stone cold killer? And if so, what's her motive? Her end game?
Told from alternating points of view, the mystery only deepens, the humor gets darker, and the climax had me screeching "no f*cking way!" and thinking what a wild ride that was when the author hit me with ANOTHER twist. Unbelievable! I enjoyed every moment of this dark, twisted read that was layer after layer of delicious surprise.
Many thanks to NetGalley and Boldwood Books for this early read. At the time this review was written, this book was slated to publish September 24, 2024.
Millieβs boss Freya is an ice cold icon. She slays at work, but does she alsoβ¦slay? If Freya really is a serial killer, how can Millie prove it without losing her job?
Full of twists, turns, murder (but not gore), this is a really fun read. If you enjoyed books by Bella Mackie & Katy Brent, you will love this book.
Slick and brilliant, How to Slay at Work has everything I've come to expect from a Sarah Bonner thriller: a twisty plot, captivating characters, and a splash of dark humour. Coming September 24th!
Millie works for a demanding boss named Freya. One day she see her boss do something suspicious before a dinner deal, at first she lets it go. A powerful man ends up dead in the same city they were in, and things quickly don't add up. Millie has privileged access to her travel history and when a pattern emerges of men (who seem to have no connection to each other) dying in cities where Freya is. Millie is determined to figure out what's going on. I thought this book had lots of humor in it, as well as a mystery. Millie was a cool character to follow , and I was interested in how she was goin to catch Freya in the act. I also enjoyed reading Freya perspective. I would give this book a solid 4.
The devil wears prada meets how to kill men and get away with it!
I loved the twists and turns, the chapters are fast paced and short, so youβll be flying through this book!
Iβll definitely keep my eyes out for more of this author!
Thanks to NetGalley, the publisher and the author for the ARC in exchange for an honest review.
And you thought you had a bad boss.. Millieβs boss is a serial killer!!
Millie gets an unexpected promotion, no pay rise but extra work and travelling with Freya, the boss from hell. On her first day she finds herself in Paris on a work trip, when she sees her boss dressed all in black and scaling up the outside of the hotel they are staying at. The best day a man is found dead. Millie stars to invest and finds it is the first time a dead body is found while her boss has been away,
This was a darkly humorous story that had me turning the pages into the night. I loved The Perfect Twin by this author and this was up there with it. So fun to read, it had me laughing when really I shouldnβt have been. Freya was a truly awful character but I couldnβt turn the pages fast enough. It is twisty, shocking and emotional.
Thanks so much to Boldwood Books for the advanced copy of this book to read. Publishes on September 24th. A must read.
This was a fun read! The twists were predictable but satisfying. I flew through it. The ending felt rushed and incomplete, but overall I really enjoyed it.
Millieβs boss, Freya, is a real bitch! Her assistant, Sam, disappeared without a trace and Freya forces Millie to take over Samβs job with no notice and no pay upgrade.
Millie accompanies Freya on a trip to Paris for a conference and while sheβs out on the balcony for a smoke at their beautiful hotel, she sees Freya dressed in black hurrying down an alley and then she leaps from balcony to balcony like a cat with a pill bottle shoved in the pocket of her pants. Okay, either Freya enjoys parkour or sheβs an assassin.
The next day, a man is found dead inside his hotel room from an apparent overdose. On the way home from Paris, Millie receives a mysterious text telling her to look up the manβs death and compare it to another death that occurred at another conference that Freya attended. Is her boss a serial killer?
I picked this up as a Read Now because I liked the cover and immediately dove in completely blind. I loved all the women in this story, except Freya, she WAS a real bitch.
Iβm still wrapping my head around this story and the bombshell that was dropped near the end. I almost felt sorry for a character until her true colors showed through her fake facade.
What a ride! Millie works for a woman who would give Miranda Priestley a run for her money, but she just needs to stick it out a little bit longer. Until she is encouraged to connect the dots and realises that every time her boss travels for work, a person in that location mysteriously dies. Could Millie's boss be killing them?
This book was brilliantly twisty and I was completely hooked. There were reveals and drama and it was just generally a very exciting read. Loved it!

Sarah Bonnerβs How to Slay at Work delivers a darkly funny, twist-filled ride through the world of corporate intrigue. With Millieβs demanding boss Freya suspected of being a serial killer, the dual perspectivesβMillieβs investigation and Freyaβs own twisted mindβcreate a gripping narrative that keeps you on your toes. The fast-paced plot, full of sharp humor and unexpected twists, makes this a must-read for fans of psychological thrillers with a corporate edge.
While the chaotic pacing and scattered writing didnβt fully click with me, the inventive concept and dual perspectives are compelling and add depth to the suspense. If you enjoy dark humor and intricate mysteries set against a corporate backdrop, this book is worth diving into.
Its about a terrible boss with irrational requests. Millie doesn't realize what she has gotten herself into when she was forced to take on a new role in the office. Millie started looking into the deaths of individuals when her boss was in the area. Millie was sent message that kept her researching. Millie gets sent on a roller coaster of events. There is so many twists and turns you really have no idea what is coming next. My favorite part of the book was how it shows you the point of view from each of the main characters. The author has found a way to make gasp in shock and laugh in the next moment! I wish the major events in the books were more detailed it would add more to the story.

devil wears prada meets sharon boltonβs the pact and i devoured every single word. this was BRILLIANT
Sarah bonner is one to watch
βHow to Slay at Workβ has a promising concept: secret assassin boss. But it was really not my sort of novel. Both main characters are pretty unlikable and the writing overall felt so scattered and jumbled. I just couldnβt get into the story. It was pretty fast paced which possibly was some of the problem but it felt like a ADHD mind dump sometimes. The idea and twists were ok but felt very surface to me.
I really enjoyed Her Perfect Twin and Her Sweet Revenge so was eager to read this.
Ive read plenty of darkly humorous female vigilante k*ller thrillers, from Sweet Pea to Pretty Evil, How To Slay At Work puts a new spin of it as main Character Millie suspects her boss Freya of being the psycho k*ller.
I really enjoyed it, fast-flowing with a good complexity, plenty of twists and a frequent flip-flopping of whoβs plotting what against who. Fans of First Lie Wins will love it.
Thanks to Netgalley and Boldwood Books
If you like mystery and are looking for a unique story - this is the book for you! What a creative, fun and dark story.
I usually can predict endings, and this book had so many twists! The ending was really good, as throughout the story I found myself really wanting more character background and was happy to learn more at the end.
Quick summary: Millie has to work for a cold heart bitch boss, but she has to if she wants to climb the corporate ladder. On a work trip Millie sees her boss scale a building and learns of a death the following morning. Investigation leads to more questions and without spoilers, itβs definitely not what you thinkβ¦.
Overall this is a great quick read, with different POVs (which I personally, love)

How to Slay at Work is a unique addition to the mystery genre, bringing in corporate culture with womenβs fiction and, yes, a lot of mystery.
Millie has a truly insufferable boss in Freya but when her coworker quits she sees her boss from an even more sinister angle as she quickly suspects sheβs dealing with a serial killer. While Millie grew up in foster care and has a pretty traumatic past of her own, what she finds out about Freyaβs is fascinating and can almost explain why Freya is the way she is - at work and in her personal life. This book is a story that speaks to any woman who has worked in a corporation, especially with women who might help lift others but end up only lifting themselves. In addition, itβs a strong mystery with some twists I didnβt anticipate and an ending I wasnβt ready for.
Less funny, though extremely entertaining with a tight plot, I recommend this for anyone who is a little bored of the usual mystery and wants to dive deeper into the minds of killers.
