How to Slay at Work is a fun whiplash of a ride. If the plot isn't unique enough, it continuously morphs into another and another, as the connections between characters and events become revealed. It is an expertly executed murder mystery with layers of issues to examine and brutal truths to realize. Bonner created a truly impressive and fun thrillride. Thank you to NetGalley and BoldWood books for the advanced copy in exchange for my honest review!
4.5 ⭐️ A fantastic thriller, really kept me guessing to the end with a plot twist I did NOT see coming! Got me out of my reading slump. Would highly recommend this book - thriller with elements of comedy which I really enjoyed, especially the sarcastic remarks.

Quite a twisty book - I thought this would be similar to Katy Brent’s how to kill men & get away with it, etc, but it’s actually more original than that and takes a different path. There’s just enough plot reveals and twists to keep the reader interested, but thankfully not too many as to become pantomime or included just for the shock value - everything makes sense when it’s revealed.
I did enjoy the book, the only bit that was a downside for me was how copy/paste the dynamic between Millie & Freya is from The Devil Wears Prada. It's iconic, but we all know it now - it would have been nice if that aspect was crafted in a more original way.
My Rating: 4⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ - 3.5 rounded up, ate it up but lacked a bit in the ending for me!!
Do you have a bad boss?? Someone who is on your arse 24/7, demanding and rude? Well how about all that and shes a serial killer!!!
I went for this one when I wouldn’t normally because I had hoped the style would be similar to Hope This Finds you Well which I loved. That one is not a thriller/mystery or whatever you want to call this one but the writing style is kind of similar (different author though just to be clear).
I liked that each POV was telling the story and they were talking to me throughout as well… it was like I was along for the ride with them and if done poorly its a nightmare but done well and I find it really enhances a story like this.
I don’t think there were too many surprises in this one I think there were supposed to be a few twists which I clocked early on but thats ok cause I was really into it.. I liked finding out about Millie and Freya and the ultimate what would happen…
I ripped through it so its super easy to read the only real complaint I have is that by about 70% it gets really silly and I know its supposed to be that way but if it had kind of stuck to the same trajectory it was on I think it could have slid into a real 5 star winner… but for me it got just a little bit too silly and the ending kind of felt rushed.
That’s really the only reason I deducted a star (and a half) I wanted more of what was in the first half and less of how it ended up. I just felt a little let down.
I think people will love this - my prediction is it will be a mainstream hit and I hope it is… it’s really very clever I am just a bit nit-picky and I did just have a 5 star book prior so my hopes were even higher, is that unfair, maybe. Is it too bad… yep 🤣
This book was awesome! It reminded me a bit of the devil wears Prada with the way the boss acted. The storyline was really intriguing and kept me hooked. I needed to know what was going to happen next. I would definitely recommend this book!
Thank you to NetGalley and Boldwood Books for the ARC
Fun, fun, fun! Oh I had such a great time reading this. It was all I wanted and I devoured it in no time. There were several twist, not all that unpredictable, but fun nonetheless.
How to Slay at Work by Sarah Bonner was an engaging and entertaining read, offering a welcome distraction during a busy time. The novel introduces Freya, a boss whose strong personality initially makes her come off as abrasive. When Millie, recently promoted, starts working closely with Freya, she discovers there’s much more beneath the surface. As Millie observes Freya’s peculiar behaviors, she becomes increasingly suspicious, even questioning whether Freya might be a serial killer.
The book's fast pace and unexpected twists kept me hooked from start to finish. With its shorter chapters and intriguing plot, it’s a great pick for fans of thrillers. I’m looking forward to exploring more of Sarah Bonner’s work in the future!
Special thanks to NetGalley and Boldwood Books for this advance e-ARC.
This book was a great read. I felt overall the different points of view were clever. I was a bit surprised with some of the relationships in the book. My only thing that disappointed me was near the end the book was setup pretty dramatic on what was going to go down. Then it cuts to the epologue. I felt this took away from the high action point within the book. I wish the ending was a bit cleaner and could've been a follow up on what Millie is up to after everything.
I did post on goodreads
This book was SO GOOD! Millie is an entry level Bid Manager and her devil-wears-prada-esque boss is super intimidating even more so when Millie thinks she discovers that Freya is … a serial killer?! There were 2-3 sold twists that I wasn’t super shocked by but were also really good. The book is well written and is so fun?? I think the best part is that Freya is likable. She’s this bitch boss, potential serial killer yet is a likable character through that. Highly recommend. Thank you netgalley and Boldwood Books for the ARC!
Read and reviewed in exchange for a free copy from NetGalley. This was an entertaining read with echoes of (and even a reference to!) 'The Devil Wears Prada). Bonner's writing was well-paced and balanced humour, intrigue, and tension well. There were plenty of twists, and the characters were written well. This was a fun read and I'd like to see more by this author.
I loved How to Slay at Work!
Freya really reminded me of Miranda from The Devil wears Prada! (Although, she is a serial killer, so they are slightly different I suppose 😂) but the boss bitch vibe was definitely vibin for me!
I love dark humour, which this had plenty of, and the twisty plot kept me guessing the whole way through. I don't usually call thrillers 'fun' but this one was and I really enjoyed it.
I'll definitely be recommending this one to my book friends!
Wow this book was so fun. I was not prepared for where this story was going. I really hated Freya at first and that is obviously the point but after a while I grew to like her. She is definitely a strong personality! This one was sinfully twisty and unexpected. I really enjoyed this one and look forward to reading more by this author!
Thank you NetGalley and Boldwood Books for access to the ARC in exchange for an honest review.
This book had a great plot with intriguing characters. I’ll definitely be looking out for more from this author.
I had so much fun reading this book! It is like a cross between The Devil Wears Prada and Dexter. Freya is a terrible boss but is she also a serial killer? Thanks so much to Boldwood Books for the ARC of this book to read. Publishes on September 24th.
Devil wears prada meets Dexter- there, says it all! This was such a fun read and I wasn’t sure what to expect but I really enjoyed this book. I really recommend it as it’s such a pleasant surprise and enjoyable.
What a fun read.
Was not sure what to expect but I really enjoyed this book. Thank you for the opportunity to review
Def recommend to others
Millie works as an assistant at Serendipity, a beauty company, where her boss, Freya, is a bitch! Millie becomes suspicious of Freya when men start dying when Freya is away on business trips so she starts to dig a little deeper, will she like what she finds out though?!
There are two POVs in this book, Millie, and Freya. The twist in this book was something I didn’t expect at all! I was hooked from the beginning and it just got better and better! Well worth a read and I’ll be reading Sarah’s other books for sure! If you’re a fan of Katy Brent or CJ Skuse, this is for you!
Thank you to NetGalley and Boldwood Books for this ARC.
After her colleague Sam disappears without a trace, Millie gets a kind of promotion (more work for the same pay) and is taken on a business trip by her new boss Freya, and through some observations and mysterious self-destructing WhatsApp messages to herself, discovers that she has to be a serial killer who Millie has now unwittingly given alibis for. What should she and best friend Lissa do with this alarming knowledge? What has a woman in a care home to do with everything and who is Kieran Lucas really? And what actually happened to Verity?
This time we're not asked to be sympathetic to the female serial killer as she's quite objectively a bitch boss, and you can't trust a word she says. The Devil Wears Prada overtones are strong! But has she got a reason for her killing spree?
The story is told in multiple POVs, mostly by Millie and Freya. This manages to ramp up the tension considerably, as we discover back stories of all parties, intentions, plottings and what they know about each other before they mutually realise. Every time we think one of them has the upper hand, the POV changes, and with it comes another twist in the tale. There were so many twists and turns that I had whiplash at the end!
I read this immediately after "Sweet Pea" and couldn't help comparing, but the two books, while equally brilliant, are nothing like each other.
This is a gripping, tense read that doesn't overstay its welcome and isn't gory. It is a brilliant read about corporate culture, intrigues and toxic men (and women), and the twists keep you on the edge of your seat. I guarantee you won't see the ending coming!
As a personal aside, can I just say thank you for the finest (and correctly spelled) German insults I've read in a while in an English book. As a German native now living abroad I really appreciate them!
"Maybe if we all went and snuffed out some lousy little man we’d all feel so much better. We could treat it like therapy."
3.5 stars. I wasn’t sure at first but this book grew on me the more I read. This is very much The devil wears prada crossed with Dexter. The story begins from Millie’s POV working for her mega bitch boss Freya. Freya is a nightmare boss and it turns out a nightmare in general as Millie starts connecting the dots on work trips that just so happen to coincide with the unfortunate deaths of different men. Just as I started to think the story was slowing down we switch to Freya’s POV which energises the story. I won’t give any more spoilers but I will say this was a unique and enjoyable story with likeable main characters and a decent ending.
Ms. Boner has a real talent for telling a hillarious, seat-gripping story with likeable main characters and seriously awful bad guys. Brilliantly twisty and thoroughly entertaining story that will grabb your attention form the first page.
