This is the first book I've read by this author, and I don't think it will be my last. I went in thinking this was a pure romance book but found it to be more literary fiction with a little sweet romance thrown in. I had mixed feelings as I read the book, as it felt like parts were slow moving toward the beginning of the story. I loved the development of Anais and how her relationships with others (and herself) grew across the book. This is definitely a cute little hotel renovation book with a little Christmastime thrown in!
Now I want to visit Paris at Christmastime. If you like Hallmark movies, you’ll love this book. If you love the lost generation, books, and book publishing, you’ll love this book. It reads like a literary, Parisian hallmark movie with a dash of mystery. Very cute enemies-to-lovers/miscommunication. This book is just so perfect for Christmas time.
I received an arc from netgalley and the publisher.
I loved everything about this book. The author's descriptions are wonderful and make you feel like you are part of the story, from the tatty hotel at the start to the final transformation by Anais and her cousin, and the wonderful JP, not forgetting the "help" from the neighbour, Noah.
The literary aspects of this book made me want to do my own research of the literary haunts from the map of Paris that Kiki helps Anais put together for her guests-to-come, from the Bars to the little bookshops and parcs of Paris, along with the shops where they sourced the furniture for the reboot of the hotel.
The characters are as various as the discoveries in the hotel - the suites 19 & 20 are a great twist to the story that I was not expecting, and the fact that the character and relationship development flipped between Noah and Anais from hereon in was delicious!
I would recommend everyone reads this book, especially if they are book freaks, even if they go on and on about it like Noah!
This has got to be Rebecca Raisins' best yet! A book definitely not just for Christmas!
This story takes you on a love story journey set in Paris. From acquiring a run down hotel in a devoice settlement not only does she find herself, mostly to do with her fun, witty cousin Manon and her neighbour Noah but she stubbles across an unexpected mysterious room – which holds the key to a one-hundred-year-old secret – about a woman who chose love against the odds.
I will definitely choose this for my book club to read this Christmas! @NetGalley_UK @BoldwoodBooks #newfavouriteauthor
I expected to love this book as I have read many Paris stories in this style. I struggled to get into this one and found myself restarting it several times. I found the book to be to cliché with the Paris theme. The Christmas theme is not strong and I wouldn’t put it in a Christmas category. It is more of a cozy, romance, mystery read.
What a sweet Christmas story! Loved the environment., the holiday spirit and the FMC you can root for! Sure to be a holiday story I will come back to and recommend to others!
Forgive me if this review Will be a mess. I loved the atmosphere in this book, it made me want to explore paris during the christmas season, i could really åicture myself there. And the hotel, omg what bookworm would not love it. The characters in this book grew on me, i have to be honest, they irritated me at first. The clumsy one, the mansplaining one, the hurt one. But I am really glad i got to read this book.
Thank you to netgalley for letting me read this e arc in exchange for an honest opinion
This was a cute book. I got it from Netgalley and I didn't know much when I went into it. This is a good second chance romance which I mostly don't enjoy but I liked this one.
Christmas at the Little Paris Hotel tells the rollercoaster tale of Anais as she struggles to navigate her life and writing career post-divorce all while working to fix up the decrepit hotel her dirtbag ex-husband left her in the settlement. Anais's voice shines through on every page of this book which alternates between comical and heartbreaking. I absolutely LOVED her voice and her close relationship with her cousin Manon who is with her every step of the way, working to drag Anais back from darkness and towards a positive life which awaits her if she drops her bitterness and cynicism and embraces the good all around her. Of course there's a romance aspect as well but it's a nice change of pace that this thread is woven into the story instead of being the major point of the whole book. The author adding a whole other level of intrigue and mystery to the book when secret rooms are discovered in the hotel was a really nice bonus. All in all I loved this book although I felt the ending was a bit rushed as the author worked to tie up all the loose ends, but I'd read it again in a heartbeat. Thanks to NetGalley for sending me an advanced reading copy of this charming book.
The story follows the life of Anaïs, a famous romance writer with writing block and behind in creating her latest book. In addition, the divorce with François-Xavier also happens, and she gets a derelict hotel in Paris. In the latter, she had invested all her savings during their marriage, and since she could not sell it in its present condition, she had to begin its restoration. Close by her side in the process is her cousin Manon.
So, the two embark on the ambitious task of transforming the place, setting themselves a deadline to have the hotel up and running by Christmas. We witness their unwavering determination in the face of numerous challenges. Anais continues to strive to finish/start her novel, but the plot tends to take a more criminal turn since she is not at all romantically inclined at the moment.
There are quite a few funny moments, lots of bookish stories, beautifully inserted details, and sights of Paris that will make you feel like you're right there. I'm on the verge of buying a plane ticket and popping over there some weekend…
And the most exciting part—the hotel has two rooms that have been well hidden and have kept their secrets and history for over 100 years… a story of pain and one great love!
I really enjoyed the book, it was a little slow at first but once I got into the story I couldn't put it down until I figured it all out! Some of the stories were anticipated, but others had unexpected twists that kept me in suspense until the very end! And it sure is interesting to read a Christmas book in the middle of a hot summer…
Thank you Boldwood book for the ARC in exchange for an honest review!
Great read for literary and history lovers. I thoroughly enjoyed joining Anais, Noah and Manon on their adventures with the hotel. I really enjoyed the mystery aspect of the book and learning more about Paris and literary history. I loved Manon as a side character as well and think her story added a lot to the book.
Although this is set at Christmas, it could easily be at any time of year...the holiday is just a pretty backdrop. A romance writer whose been jilted and jaded, costing her her mojo and leaving her stranded in a run-down hotel that is now the only thing she owns. A cranky next-door neighbor with secrets of his own. A kooky cousin with a penchant for murder mysteries and the comic relief. And a decades-old mystery found behind the wall of said hotel....all of these come together to create a dark-tinged rom-com that will keep you reading until the very end!
As usual in my reviews, I will not rehash the publisher's blurb or the plot.
This is the second book I've read by Rebecca Raisin. Once again, this novel is set (as per the title!) in Paris. This was a nice relaxing and gentle read, with several threads running through it. I loved the mystery thread (I won't say more for fear of giving away the plot!), and the descriptions of the hotel and suites was very well done. I also liked the fact that Lilou and Genevieve - from the previous novel - made an appearance!
The lead characters of Anais and Noah were well written - Manon sounds fun, Margaret was great too! There was a good supporting cast to add further interest - some nice (eg: JP, Juliette and co) and some bad (the ex - ugh).
A lovely gentle read, that despite the "Christmas" connection would be great to read at any time of the year, or to take on holiday.
Looking forward to reading more from Rebecca.
My thanks to NetGalley and the publishers for an ARC. All opinions my own.
Who wouldn't love a romance set in one of the most romantic cities in the world? Add Christmas to this and you're onto a winner in my eyes. The characters were written so well and felt so three dimensional and the plot was good and paced well.
Anais is a romance writer but she is all written out. She’s had her fingers burnt and her heart stomped on. She’s been swizzled out of her apartment and downgraded to a hotel in seriously need of some tlc. Her ex husband has finally bedhopped out of her heart one last time and his lawyer family have helped him swindle what’s hers.
With her cousin Manon they find their feet and with the services of JP the builder and his team they fix the hotel up to get ready for opening.
Noah the mansplasiner, bar owner and litery critic next door neighbour sets her on edge but there is a crackle of attraction between them. Can she ignore it, fix her broken heart, mend the hotel, stay solvent and get over writers block to get her next romance book written? Buckle down and read on.
This was a lovely French stroll down and around a festive Francais!
Thank you NetGalley for this arc in exchange of honest review.
Thank you to netgalley galley for allowing me to review this book. I really enjoyed this book and felt myself getting lost in the story and with the characters. The book is a fun, feel-good literary-themed holiday read for book lovers at Christmas that will make you wish you could book yourself right into the Secret Library Hotel's Meet Me in Paris suite!
Anais wasn’t the only one who wanted to bludgeon her ex husband to death. He is a con-man to the finest degree.
This book is the cutest heartwarming Christmasy book. I fell in love with the characters especially Manon! I got excited every time she spoke.
A Christmas at the Paris hotel is a story about Anais La Del Croix a romance author who receives a near delict Paris hotel from her recent divorce settlement. It about the only thing she got when her husband who had nothing cheated on her with multiple women until she caught him. When she asked for a divorce he proceeded to bury her with his team of lawyers taking almost all of her money.
She had no choice but to fix up the hotel or else she would live penniless on account of writing her next book seems impossible since she was still reeling from the heartbreak and humiliation she suffered at her ex- husband hands.
And the audacity he had to comeback and try to take it back when she made it a huge success! Thank goodness for Manon!! I fell in love with the idea for the hotel!! A literary hotel ‘Magnifique!’ I think it’s every reader’s dream to have a cafe/bakery/bookshop but when I heard of this of a literary hotel I fell in love with this more. Rooms named after books and you immediately get a book from the author based on your room. A cozy reading place for readers. Parfait!
The reason I’m most enchanted with this book wasn’t the story, it was the story within it. As Anais and Manon are fixing the hotel they come across this secret room about another woman who lived in 1924s and choose love in-spite of everything the hindered her path.
And I absolutely loved the history famous and well loved authors whose works had such immense impact literature and the sites in Paris that was inspired by them. I’m absolutely going to add a lot of them on my tbr! But do not expect a review from me I’m not scholarly enough to make a critic on them.
Thank you Netgalley for providing this ARC in exchange for an honest review.
I absolutely love paris, but adding Christmas time and a love story to it, just made it that much more perfect. I was amazed. I loved the characters!
This was a lovely light hearted read. Once again Rebecca Raisin makes it feel like I’ve been on a trip to Paris. A really enjoyable book
A very enjoyable story about a French romance novelist, Anais, who receives a run-down hotel in Paris in her divorce settlement and moves into it with her cousin and sets about renovating it quickly in order to open at least some of the suites of rooms before Christmas as she needs the money.
There are a variety of great characters, her feisty cousin Manon, the (initially) grumpy American bar owner next door, the builder and his crew doing the work on the hotel, Anais's literary agent, and not so great Anais' slimy ex-husband who puts in a brief appearance.
Whilst renovating they also uncover two secret rooms that they didn't realise were there and had been hidden away for a number of years, so the mystery about who lived in these rooms and why they were hidden was quite fascinating once they uncovered the truth, and definitely a big selling point for the hotel when it officially launched.
I really like the way the book was laid out with each chapter dated heading towards Christmas so you knew where you were. I didn't feel it was a full-on Christmas feeling book, even though it was set around that period and did have Christmas mentions with markets and decorating etc., so really you could read it any time of the year and still really enjoy it. Very romantic and enjoyable!
